Hehe I'm amazed they even bothered keeping the QWERTY keyboard layout (it was purposely designed to slow typists down) but I guess people can get used to anything eventually. Rather odd that people have built empires around QWERTY typing tutor programs I think.

Have Dvorak keyboards been adopted to other counties like QWERTY.
eg. ä ö those sort of keys on the actual keyboard?

Just set it to DVORAK in Windows and relabel your QWERTY keyboard. Or better yet, pull your keyboard apart and rearrange the keys...

what so good about Dovorak?

It is supposed to be faster and more efficient by placing the most commonly used keys together...

No, the QWERTY layout was specifically design to slow typists down because old teletypewriters and computers were incapable of keeping up with most typists.

Hunter - No, it was to stop the keys jammming on early typewriters... DVORAK was designed in the 1930s, but QWERTY was so ingrained by then that people didn't want to change...

hahaha it has been around ever since typewriters were invented, because they had to put the more commonly used letters appart to stop the rods on typewriters from jamming togeter when you typed fast.

control panel, keyboard then properties then dvorak

Actually the reason they kept the QWERTY layout for early computer keyboards was for the reason I provided - the computers at the time just weren't capable of keeping up with fast typists.

Hunter that is just an urban myth. They started using it and just stuck with it as a standard that everyone knew about.

Kind of like while Microsoft is like (not better than Linux in anyway just that people are more familiar with it).

No, its not a myth; any computer historian will tell you what I said. One of the reasons was that back in ye olde early days of computers, distributed computing was all the rage. I'm assuming you don't know what distributed computing is so I'll elaborate (forgive me if you do). Basically there was only one central mainframe computer which was connected to a dumb terminal which contained basic communications electronics (usually serial). In the early versions of these terminals, the transmission speeds were VERY slow and if you typed too fast there was a good chance the buffers would overflow very quickly and a result characters would be lost. I could explain this better but I'm busy atm :).

I get what you are saying but you can't tell me the whole computer industry said no you can't use those keyboard because you type too fast on them.

It was just as much (if not the main reason) that people had just become accustomed to using the current type.

Hunter - That's BS, you could overflow the buffers on a QWERTY keyboard just as fast.

They didn't set out to - it just evolved from the teletype machine which evolved from the typewriter.

No, not the keyboard buffers, the COMMUNICATIONS BUFFERS. You forget that the early dumb terminals transmitted at and below 300 baud (NOT bits per second).

Hunter - I know you were talking about the communication buffers, I meant you could overflow the buffers with a QWERTY keyboard just as fast.

Of course. Don't forget that each time you press a character on the terminal it sends a varying amount of bits, usually around 10 bits (8 data bits).

You just proved it was BS hunter if you can casue overflows with QWERTY then what does it matter if you can cause them with DVORAK?

SD Gundam because it wasn't AS EASY to do it with QWERTY as it was with DVORAK.

I don't get how one could possible be that much faster. You see the 100m runners and don't say, just because that guy runs a certain way means he will be faster. People have there own ways and should be able to type just as fast on any layout if they get used to it.

I would try, except 90% of keyboards are QWERTY, so I'd be screwed trying to find my way around one when I goto school etc. Also, I have an ergo keyboard, so keyswitching is a tad difficult.

Well you see, there is differing levels of efficiency based on where the keys are - if they are on the most efficient layout configurations it means less time is spent moving your fingers and more time spent pressing the necessary key.

I dont know abot you hunter but moving my finger to the keys doesn't take me that long. Probably like a 1/20 of a second.
This DVORAK vs QWERTY thing seems like Vi vs Emacs to me, only nether are really that much better than the other, whereas Vi sucks compared to Emacs.

It all adds up... you may not notice it but when you start reaching very high typing speeds it affects the maximum speed and the accuracy as well.

Dvorak owns for typing speed. The world record holder does 212 wpm (170 wpm sustained for an hour) on Dvorak. QWERTY doesn't even come close. I can do 100wpm on QWERTY but i'd love to learn Dvorak cause the keys are so well placed.

Bah tried that, my u key wouldnt go in the f slot for god knows reason so I'll stick with qwerty (although dvorak sounds great as protecting your computer from newbs)

hehe just started using it, up to about 30 wpm with Dvorak so far, feels so slow after 100 with qwerty :(
