For your first linux install.. I would say Mandrake. Its piss easy to set up.. like as easy as windows at least.. and supports most new hardware. Its also based off redhat, so anything which works for redhat should work with mandrake.

If you want to be hardcore.. Go for Debian.. Its good. If you want to be really hardcore, go for *BSD.

Do u reckon it would be easy to get Optus@Home set up on a Debian Linux box?

f*** off with that mandrake and debian s***

RedHat Linux is the perfect newbies linux, 7.0 should get you into the finer points of 3d gaming in linux and quite a few other things as well.

It's not necessary however to get a whole new drive, you can simply mount your fat32 drives and make symbolic links for your game directories on your linux drive

So basically your main game binaries will be executed from linux but all the resources will still be on your fat32 drive.... conserve space hey =)

As for which isos to download, most of it looks like s***, so i would just grab the disc 1 and disc 2 isos to get your basic operating system and desktop up to speed.

I'll install redhat 7 as soon as i get some drive space, which i lack at the moment to even CREATE a linux partition, barely even d/l the isos and get them burnt.

Have fun with linux, and btw when used correctly it s***s on windows, ask anyone who's seen my box at QGL =)

*edit*

Redhat - Newbie's Linux
Debian - Security and Firewalls
Slackware - Hax0ring
Mandrake - Try hard's linux, doesn't serve any purpose, just looks good
OpenBSD - Networking

All distros have the above mentioned, it's just that some distros are stronger in the above fields than others. keep it in mind when you migrate from redhat, i would suggest debian.

If you really wanna get f***ing technical, you can install redhat 5.2, compile the latest kernel, add in the latest xwindows and all the associated RPMs for it (xwin 4.0 = win32 directx) and then you can go from there.

Most stable install i ever had =)

I take it you've never had xwindows run with a gnome shell and enlightenment windowmaker run over top of it then acid =)

Damn it looks great

Y is he a try hard because he likes mandrake? I like Mandrake too, it is a nice looking OS...

*ALL FALL IN WORSHIP OF EINSTEIN THE LINUX GOD*

As if mate. We don't need biased opinions on this matter. Everyone who has used Linux ever has their own preference on which one they like. The latest Mandrake has FAR fewer problems than the latest Red Hat from what I have seen, which is unfortunate because Red Hat was the one I had used most and is the one I am most familiar with.

And as if Slackware is made for "hax0ring". It is most similar to Debian with a BSD style interface rather than the standard Unix.

I was playing CS j00 fag =)

I'm talking about a couple of versions of mandrake ago, it looked spiffy but didn't seem to server any real extended purpose

And when i refer to hax0ring i mean nukes and pings of death and s*** like that for irc, not uber network cracking or =P

Slackware's networking and tcp is not too bad, bit of a lighter debian/bsd

anyway, wtf do you care, i'm not biased, i offered my opinion =)

And i never said get the latest redhat at any time... i answered a question as to what isos to get off aarnet and i also suggested doing a 5.2 install with a recompiled kernel

so blah =P

I am very aware of redhat's gayness from 6.0 upwards

Redhat now = Microsoft

Does all the install and setting up for you and it's all f***ing wrong

(Gay f***ing user friendliness, you don't use linux for user friendliness so STOP f***ING IT UP FOR THE REST OF US)

But i had mandrake 7 which i liked as it was easy to set up, stable as f*** and i didn't spend all day pulling my hair out trying to get the f***ing thing working.
O/S are for making life easy, if you want a mental challenge play f***ing trivial pursuit online :)
Or mabye i am just a tryhard w000t.

Enlightenment + Gnome is 'pretty' but does not look or feel good. It still runs on top of X and feels clunky because of it.

What is Linux Windows emulation like these days? (I believe its referred to as WINE ..windows emulation..)
If i wanted to play Baldurs gate for instance on Linux would any of the emulation stuff handle it or would it just crap itself?
any experiences?

thx
