A 13 part mini series filmed in New Zealand based in Roman times.

Watched the first ep and I have to say, there is nearly not enough naked women and the c word for my liking. o_O

The lead is played by Andy Whitfield, a small known Aussie actor.

It has Xena back and I hear there is to be full frontal male nudity (the first ep had full frontal female nudity) and girl on girl sex scenes.

I watched the screener of these, an it was ok. Not up to the standard for me to spend my time on. It needed to be up to the quality of Rome or The Tudors and it doesn't come close. The styalised blood splurts annoyed me too.

If there isn't a "No, I'm spartacus!" scene, I don't want to watch it.

There's a Brissy guy in this - Dan Feuerriegel. He's in from Episode 8, from memory playing some sort of German slave. It sounds like he is on board for series 2 as well. Keep an eye out for him.

the boobs were good. unfortunately that's all that was good. the rest of the show was pretty crap imo. too corny & way too americanised. it was like a b-grade mixture of rome & 300... without any of the coolness that made both those shows great. the combat & blood was hilarious at first then sorta sad :P

lol Kat, you could just try something from Digital Playground instead...

Hey Khel, in year 10 we watched the original Spartacus then the next day we had a relief teacher. In role call we pulled that scene, was awesome.

Teacher said, "Charles, Andrew"

Kid #1 stood up, "I'm Andrew Charles!"

Kid #2 stood up, "No. I'm Andrew Charles!"

and so on.

Was hilarious. Teacher didn't know what was going on.

Sex on TV (as in, showing penetration) is like the final frontier I reckon.

You can watch any kind of murder, torture - close up, long and drawn out, violent as all f***.

But God help you if you had a man putting his cock in a women or a mouth - what a heinous, heinous act!!! We cannot show it!!! It's horrible. It cannot be shown.

The idea always amused me.

Only one sex scene in the latest one, and not a sexy one either. A bit of boob though, but it was all fighting and stuff. Very boring.

The quality of this show is so s*** and painful, probably because we've been spoilt by good TV for a while now. s*** acting and dialogue and s*** sets and cgi. Only good parts are the bewbs and a couple of the fight scenes. I just skim through, a full episode isn't worth the time to watch properly.

I think the CG is ok as long as you keep in mind that the intention is not to make things look realistic, but instead try and see each scene as if it were a frame in a comic book.

It's definitely not as well executed as Sin City and 300, but then it probably has a fraction of the budget for digital effects so I think they've done ok.

The acting is pretty hit and miss though, most of the lead ensemble are decent, but damn there's some hams in the supporting cast.

I <3 ancient rome stuff regardless, so am digging it and will keep watching.

Jupiters cock! I love this show.

By far my favourite at the moment. It just keeps getting better and better.

Can't get over EP 8. Last scene was so confrontational. Would have been so brutal living back in those days.

shad: it doesn't really compare at all. Both are ancient rome period pieces but if Rome was a literary classic Spartacus would be a (Frank Miller-esque) comic book.

Actually, the 'c' word is derived from a deragatory term for female genitalia (cunnus). So, I suppose it would be there because that's where the term originally came from :P

Also, from an historical point of view, I actually think it's a more accurate depiction of Roman life than you might think. The Romans were not a bunch of friendly, civilised people by today's standards. They were vicious, greedy, bloodthirsty, cruel and petty.

I even find the style of cinematography as shown in the fight scenes to be done quite well. It's similar to a lot of Frank Miller stuff and in my opinion, seems to be done in order to mitigate some of the impact of the violence in the show (consider it as a way of getting past the censors).

The merkin shot in one of the first episodes sold it for me, anyone who puts a pubic hair wig on is win.

I don't mind it, a mate at work (who I think might be a closet) keeps bitching about all the cock in it. There's enough tits to make up for it though.

I watched the first episode of this and it was f***ing laughably bad compared to Rome. Over the top dialog. Over the top violence. Excessive swearing (I love swearing in my shows but I just thought this was a retarded amount of drops). Decent production, costumes, effects, etc.

I'll try another couple eps but I don't anticipate any enjoyment will result.

I agree, the violence is over the top (see my comment re: the OFLC). However, from what we know of Roman civilisation, the language was probably fairly accurate.

The violence is so stylised though, after the first 2 episodes I was (incorrectly) convinced that this show was based on a comic book series, and that the way the fighting played out was designed to match up to the comic artist's drawing style.

I think they must have been getting complaints about the amount of huge tits in the show, because this episode was filled with tiny titties.

Also, they really know how to end episodes.

Isn't that illegal now since tiny titties = children which means we're paedophiles for seeing 30yr olds who have tiny boobs.

One of the best and most satisfying season finales ever.

I was unsure about this show after the first couple of eps. Looked a bit too try-hard and unrealistic. But it really picked up and became freaking awesome.

If you have watched the first couple of eps and stopped, I encourage you to finish off the season - it's worth it!

Yeah this show started off balls but ended up gold. It is one of the few shows I've ever watched that went up hill from start to finish, each successive episode was better than the last. Most shows start off great but just fall into a predictable and boring routine after a few eps.

I think a large part to it's sucky start and gradual improvement is due to the acting. The actors just seemed so lost and B-gradish in the first few eps but they eventually became much more comfortable in their roles.

Spoiler:
Also, I'm pretty chuffed that the blonde chicky and Ashur survived, we like a good villain after all and if they all got their comeuppance in the first season it'd be pretty boring for the next.

Finally watched all this in the last few days. Definitely started weak and seeming like a lame 300 knock off, but by the end it was one of my favourite shows ever.

Apparently the lead actor has been diagnosed with an early stage of blood cancer and is receiving treatment, so season 2 has been delayed. I read though that a 6 episode prequel is being looked at, I think involving Batiatus and Xena.

Andy Whitfield had a powerful voice in that scene where he is offering freedom, this new guy sounds like he is just reading off the script.

Don't want to sound insensitive and hope he manages to kick the cancer, but I wouldn't say that Andy Whitfields acting was exactly one of the strengths of the show. As long as this new guy is half-way decent it shouldn't affect things much.

For this new season, I'd be much more concerned about the lack of John Hannah and Lucy Lawless as they were obviously two of the strongest actors and characters in the last 2 seasons. They still have a pretty diverse ensemble left, but they're going to have to do well to replace those two.
Nerfington
Posts: 3420

Spartacus indeed had some weak acting overall (but totally made up for it elsewhere), and John Hannah in particular was the huge strength as Dan said (the Doctore was also pretty good). The new guy appears to carry even less weight however, though it's only a tiny clip, so we will see. Andy Whitfield had some great non-verbal acting at least.

edit: I mean he had good crying/angry acting, those were important. :P I'm going to miss his yell. :(
