Topic: Display driver stopped responding and has recovered (win 7)

Alright so I've f***n hammered google for a fix, so far some of the recommended fixes haven't done anything. I figured some of you might have crossed paths with this error and you're more literate then most of the tards on the net so you might be able to help me out :D

Basically ever since i installed Win 7 when i play a game, doesn't really matter what it is.. but it's more noticeable in CoD 4.. HoN and WoW.. especially in WoW since the other 2 can recover themselves but WoW just freezes.

Screen flickers, goes black for about 2milli's then image comes back but frozen, eventually it says "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered".

So yer pretty much tried every fix i've stumbled upon.

it's pretty friggin hot, your card might simply be overheating.

I doubt its windows 7 related, I used to get that error back when I ran XP and it was because my card was overheating.

Yep, used to get this on Windows XP with my old ATI card (VPU recover)
Check overheating first, upgrading drivers might help too.

Considering it seems to be doing it in all games, your card may be on the fritz. But try updating / rolling back to older drivers just in case.

There are new 195 drivers out since the 26th.

do any of you guys use those pressurized air canisters to clean the dust out? can u get them from bunnings or anything like that?

I use a compressor but I know Officeworks sell's the air in a can, expensive tho.

$20 from officeworks. None at Bunnings that I've seen.

Sounds like overheating to me Raider. My laptop did that occasionally when I blocked the vents on the bottom - recovered, not frozen. It's possible WoW is no good at completely recovering, hence the total lockup.

i cleaned this s*** out after the last dust storm like 1 month ago, it isn't dust.. the card is pretty new.. 4 months old, temps is fine so it aint over heating either :\ got the latest drivers as well..

i'm saying that i'm pretty sure it's a conflict between the card and win 7 because nothing has changed with my pc except my opt system.. and xp wasn't erroring.

Maybe the card is just dying then?

Maybe try reinstalling xp as a dual boot type of thing and try it again under xp, see if it still crashes. Bit of a pain, but it at least it will tell you more definitely whether its a windows 7 thing or not.

I get this error all the time on my toshiba laptop with its 8600M GT, the only way to fix it is to restore it to factory defaults and hope next time it lasts longer. This fixes it for a while but the problem usually comes back later. It came with vista pre-installed.

$20 bucks seems worth it every couple of months as a solution to stop dust i guess... one air canister per use? or can u keep em for a while?

in regards to the actual thread question, i do not have any solutions if drivers / dust have been tried.

I used to constantly get this error message; first in Vista and then Win7. I replaced my RAM not long ago and havent had the error message since. This error can be generated by pretty much any piece of hardware in your pc (I would look at the GPU or RAM 1st though)

Your PSU may also be the one struggling and if it's doing poorly, it can show up as video card hangs.

As others have said, overheating or psu or both. Do you get any artifacting in windows by any chance? You may want to check out your core gpu temps and see if it alright, you could also try winding the core and memory back a bit and see if it helps.

Also I have given up on cans of compressed air in favour of a compressor cause I go through about 3cans a week

can compressed air sucks big time, i was getting an error with my ram so i ran some diogs and it turned out 1 had a bunch of faults, so i've taken that out (this was 2 weeks ago and the error remained).

I've actually manually over ridden some details via nVidia control panel forcing 4x AA, 4x antro etc and so far i haven't had a crash yet.. also done some reg tweaks to it and no crashes so who knows.

Meanwhile if a ram stick has multiple errors like mine did (3) should i just take it back and say gimme a new 1? or is there a way to fix them

They would normally just rma it and eventually you'll get another dependant on the store and how they deal with this type of return. Some might swap it over the counter

This happened to me quite fequently.

1) my fan on vid card was broken so i got myself an 80mm fan and superglued it on. That fixed the overheating issue..

2) what version of the display driver are you running? early win 7 nvidia drivers would do that all the fkn time for me. use windows update and ensure you have the latest drivers.

got the latest and i really don't see how it could possibly be the card over heating when it's running at 56-57c under stress (i.e. running the games that give the error / problem)

it can still be overheating because the temp measuring diode only measures the card temp in one location. You can easily have overheating voltage regulators or memory chips even with the card reporting that the GPU temp is ok.

However, it is a less likely cause given the temperatures for the GPU itself are ok.

Iv got the same issue with my computer i have just updated my mother board and cpu! And have done s*** loads of research into it AND Have come down to driver issues! i had xp on my old system witch did it sometimes tried diferent power surplys and changed back to 2gig with no change. And have installed vista this time round along with new cpu and mother board! still goes black during some games like ME2 COD MW2 And fallout 3 is just f@%ked, but it allways recovers! So hope Nvidia sorts out soon.Have also talked to Navida online tech dudes on there site and thay told me to use certin drivers! no go though! I had this same problem with Win7 64-bit and it only started when i installed new corsair 4GB of memory and my new GTX285 going back to my OCZ 2GB and it would still occasionally do it... after that i went back to Vista cause it was frustrating the hell out of me after trying loads of drivers and reinstalling Win7 from scratch and i havent had a problem since...

Dont think badly of Win7 64-bit though i have it on my laptop and its awesome, very stable and runs like a dream.

I had this for ages on a vista install, finally put win 7 on it and it fixed it. Tried for days to get rid of it.

I'm back on Win 7 64-bit and ive had no problems since so i think it was just dodgy drivers from nvidia in my case

My vista 64-bit install does this when exiting games on occasion (says display drivers recovered) but never had this happen in game and never been symptomatic aside from the error message.
I always assumed it was just dodgy application code:video drivers since it always seemed to be consistent apps that did it.

I thought for sure you were going to say you had a 5770 and I was going to say "good luck" - cause they STILL haven't released a fix for it even though it was promised too many months ago to even remember.

Won't be buying ATI again! Anyhow, carry on =]

I had a MSI GTX275 (oc). Was doing the error all the time when playing mass effect 2+ MW2 Tried all kinds of things to sort it out even replace PSU with no joy.Just 2 weeks ago wanted a dx11 gpu so got evga gtx460 super clocked, and the system has been stable since with no driver issues when playing mass effect or MW2! Yeah about time, so i think it might be done to 200 series gpu not shaw about ati, or good be dx10 card issues in that area, who noes?????
Im just glad it is fixed now!

I dont think it is heat issues cause i replaced my case to with a antec 902 gameing case with a heap of fans thinking it might be a heat issue and it was still doing it untill i just replace my card with 400 series! i think it comes down to the 200 seires gpu, because my old 9 series had no dramas!
