QUEENSLAND has banned smoking in cars carrying children under the age of 16.

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Paul Lucas said the new laws would start from January next year and apply on all public roads.

"These new laws are about reducing the exposure children have to tobacco smoke," Mr Lucas said yesterday.

The legislation was passed in Queensland parliament yesterday as part of measures contained in the Health and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2009.

The Government described its anti-smoking laws as being the toughest in the country, including smoking bans for indoor and outdoor public places as well as restrictions on retail advertising, display and promotion of tobacco products.

In Queensland alone there are 276,000 smokers with children aged under 16, the Government said.

"The level of tobacco smoke inside a vehicle is very high, and we know young children involuntarily exposed to tobacco smoke in confined environments have significantly increased health risks, including bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, ear infections and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome," Mr Lucas said.

Other states are also introducing bans on smoking in cars with children.

Hmmm, I had thought this was already in place in QLD a long time ago?
I'm a non-smoker so it's not really going to effect me. How long before they ban anything else they want to because of 'think of the children' though. It's the parents choice... it's a bad choice, but it's theirs.

I dont understand why people would want to smoke in their car anyway, it makes it smell like s***. Great for the young ones that dont enjoy passive smoking.

You are not permitted to make 'choices' that harm your kids.

i think that throwing ciggie butts out the window of your car is banned... in that there is a law proscribing it.

they need to extend this to 'no smoking on motorcycles when your pillion is a child without a helmet'

Yeah, that's confrontation worthy. And number-plate-to-EPA worthy.

VIC is lagging on this one

Throwing ciggies out the windows comes under littering laws.

At the very least you get $300 for "littering from a vehicle".

The cop could possibly upgrade it to $400 for "dangerous littering" if he deemed so.

They should make it a MASSIVE fine + demerit points for ciggies from a car, completely unacceptable, they treat their own bodies like s*** so they don't care about ruining our streets.

I smoke rollies and filters for rollies are made from cotton, hence biodegradable (this is to my knowledge might be wrong), anyway I was driving through the coast and threw a butt out the window and a biker drove past and made obscene gestures. Now I don't through my butts out the window, cause bikers scare me.

I understand what paves saying, rollies just make you look like more of a bevan
I think its the commitment to smoking that really tops it, you have to be really committed or cheap to want to roll your own

I'm a smoker who has children of my own and I support this ban.

I also think that there should be a ban on smoking in your own home when children are present, smoking within 10m of children (however this cannot always be helped when parents pushing prams come near you when you smoke), and smoking within 10m of facilities where children may be present, i.e. schools, fast food restaurants, play areas, etc...

Edit: I would actually support a ban on smoking in cars whether children were present or not.

Now all they need to do is ban games that have blood and violence in them so that the kids can't play them!

Still going to get bushfires though, it's the natural way for some eucalyptus tree's to regenerate.

Eucalyptus oil is highly flammable trees have been known to explode.

Thems are some pretty awesome trees.

When i see a smoker i see a fool with a weak mind.

We used to game at a friends place and he and couple of his friends were heavy smokers. Have you noticed that Smokers tend to have friends that smoke ?
We used to deliberately play longer games that would keep them away from smoking because there was a 'no smoking in the house' rule. They would always fall to pieces towards the end of the time limit.

Anything that requires concentration will cause a smoker to need to light up more often. Used to crack me up when they would smoke "lights" even more than heavies.

There's a major unstated premise here: there is no safe level of cigarette exposure. Really? So if I walk through someone's puff of smoke, that increases my chance of disease? I'm highly skeptical.

I agree that this ban intuitively seems like a good idea (and I'm all for it), but is there any evidence that shows that exposing children to cigarette fumes in a car has an impact on their health at any point in time???

I'm not sure that this law is being put in place to protect kids who might walk through a puff of smoke while sitting in a car with someone smoking.

What I got from the article was that:
"The level of tobacco smoke inside a vehicle is very high, and we know young children involuntarily exposed to tobacco smoke in confined environments have significantly increased health risks, including bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, ear infections and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome," Mr Lucas said.

I'm only adding to what Jim has basically summed up nicely

but is there any evidence that shows that exposing children to cigarette fumes in a car has an impact on their health at any point in time???

Laws are often in place to protect innocent people from stupid people
I walk through the odd puff of smoke and it annoys me when they're breaking the law but I get over it - I dont think its harming me

this law is for Sharon from Ipswich and her 6 kids, husband barry - both of them smoke 2 packs a day in their 8 seater 4x4 wagon with the 6 kids

^haha

My bad, I didn't read the article, but I'm still skeptical. Kids who have to sit in cars with parents smoking are probably exposed to smoking in a lot of other places too, and are probably more likely to smoke themselves. So again, my question is, if you had a child who only had exposure to cigarettes during car trips every now and then but never at any other time, would it actually increase the risk of those problems? It's not necessarily a question that can be answered, and it's better to play it safe than sorry, which is why I'm all for the ban.

My mum and aunty smoked heavily when i was a wee fella inside the house.
I had asthma as a child.
Mum and the Aunty gave up and I dont have asthma anymore.
I think smoking around kids can irritate asthma but prolly doesnt cause it.
Smoking also stinks out other peoples clothes.

When I was riding a few years back, I had some bogan in a Corolla flick a butt out the car window. It bounced off my visor and scared the s*** out of me as to what would've happened if my visor was up. So, I punched off his wing mirror.

Additionally, I used to live out in a rural area. One time we were fighting a bushfire that some f***ing a****** had lit because he "thought it would be funny". I've actually seen a gum tree explode. It's a seriously awe (and terror) inspiring sight. Particularly when all you have is a fire rake and totally inadequate back-harness sprayer and the trucks are still 20 minutes away.

I've heard a head of a fire department say that cigarette buts only start something like 1% of bush fires.
