· allows a member of the public to locate a permanent AEC office

· allows an elector to easily locate a polling place so they can cast their vote at a federal electoral event

· reduces calls to the AEC’s election call centre in relation to queries about polling place locations

· promotes self-service options by Users

· provides a set of spatial services to a number of internal AEC applications; primarily the Election Call Centre Application (ECCA)

That was my first thought too.. why reinvent the wheel?

Actually probably not, because i have no idea what the f*** they mean by spatial services..

But here's my theory:

Is spatial services like spatial, as in space? As in if we link that to universe, we can come to a universe of discourse, aka relevant set of entities that are being dealt with by quantifiers. So by a logic flaw i could say maybe they are after a set of tools which helps them answer questions based on locality?

Really though, as a government entity, they should be releasing the data in an open, publicly accessible format, and loosely tying that in to some free services (like Google Maps).

(We're checking this tender out actually to get some more information to see if it's something we're going to chase.)

From the government websites ive visited, they seem to love PDF maps that arent searchable.

Anyone here big into the Google API?

I want to know if there's a function where you can provide text that never fails like

"12 Smith St, Melbourne, Australia"

And get GPS coords out.

just make sure you always put;

"Number Street, Suburb, State, Australia" and a post code if you can
I've always found the maps to be very at locating exactly what you're after, so long as you give it all the data you have
