Anyone know of any cheap companies? From my investigations aus post is a rip off, I assume UPS or DHL are best bets, although I think there are other businesses that have bulk orders with these two and you can go through them for a discounted price.

What are you sending, be as specific as possible. No idea why you think DHL or UPS is "best bets". From what I hear they are a lot more expensive but you get what you pay for.
P.S you get what you pay for. |

Totally depends on what it weighs, dimensions, and how fast you need it there |

I have recently discovered that shipping oversea's via an accompanied baggage service is pretty cheap, managad to get a pallet 300kg sent from here to ireland for 900 nzd. You just make out your the reciver and your flying to xyz and its all good. DHL on the other hand waiting 2k for for it

What do you exactly mean by "accompanied baggage"?

UPS are damn good.
I ordered a few things from the US on a Tuesday night here and it's turned up on Friday morning. |

Aus post isn't a rip off compared to other companies. The problem is that you are sending a lithium battery which is n ow declared as a dangerous good (all batteries are), so australia post x-rays all outbound EMS and removes any package that contains batteries.
You will need to go to DHL or fedex directly (air port drive or get the package picked up) and declare it as a dangerous good so it can fly as a dangerous good. Lithium batteries have a tendency to blow up and alkaline batters leak and then damage the structure of the aircraft. |

If you can't safely drop-kick it across the room, it's not ready to be mailed.

A good rule of thumb is if you can't hold it directly in front of you and drop it, then it isn't ready to post.

please use a s*** load of bubble wrap or something. fragile stickers or whatever mean nothing to us.Oh yeah, Mr Fragile, he seems to be a very popular person, gets lots of mail. If you're going to put fragile on it, get the REALLY obvious white/red tape and cover the f***er up on EVERY single side. Ideally if the ENTIRE box is covered in fragile tape minus the address label, I'm talking 50x the word fragile appears on the box. If you go to this effort, drivers and sorters (from our group at least) will definitely take note and make a special effort. Writing fragile in pen or texter, nope, isn't going to do s***... putting FRAGILE stickies or tape on 1 side, nop, 3/4 of the time we won't even see it and even if we do, the box COMPLETELY covered takes preference. Remember Aus Post doesn't offer a fragile service, it's merely a suggestion. You with post Wrecktim? Working in the batcave or something? last edited by CHUB at 22:27:37 21/Oct/09 |

Go with a courier, post isn't really ideal.
Even if drivers and sorters take extreme care, a lot of the processes in the mail centers involve mechanical tipping and other crap that could break sensitive equipment. |

Several times during posting parcels can fall about a meter and have stuff land on them. So you need to pack it with that in mind.
Generally if you stickie it with fragile stickers like crazy and say PLEASE, then they may get treated better. Assume they wont. |

Wrecktim: I presume you work for AAE not the batcave? CHUB at the batcave we don't load the planes ourselves, just sometimes into the airline containers.
CHUB and auspost crew: How do you suggest getting a computer up to cairns from brisbane? If you were to post it, take everything out and bubble wrap it all, 3 layers or so, then pack it tightly into a box. Might be a bit hard with the mobo and case. But all your cards just a few layers of bubble wrap then packed tightly into a sterdy box. I also wouldn't worry about the battery on the mobo either. Express post isn't x-rayed so there is no chance of getting the parcel RTS for the battery..... |
