ZZzz
Sorry guys, I have a PC here that connects via standard network cable (Cat5) to a router. This PC can access the router fine. However, whenever you attempt to surf through Firefox OR I.E. It returns 'can't find ... etc. etc.'. I have checked hosts file, tried ipconfig /dnsflush Tried uninstalling AVG off it, Tried system restore to weeks ago when it was working Tried different ports on the router (though I find this unlikely as it can access the router ok). This problem just started quite randomly on this PC. I'm at a bit of a loss, I'd format it, but I'd rather attempt to fight the dragon with a pointed stick before nuking it from orbit. Any suggestions? Cheers. |

sounds like it's not picking up an IP. check out if it's got a real IP starting wiith 192.?.?.? i have had issues where it will see your network via the router but can't get an external connection cause it's got a wanky IP of 169.0?.?.? have you tried restarting the router? pull the power for a few seconds and reconnect |

Hmmm interesting, I will give that a go.
It does seem to have a bit of a wanky i.p. though its 10.1.1.3 (router is 10.1.1.1) One sec, hopefully I don't lose my own connection XD (though this machines i.p is a 192 - go figure?) |

Well, you sir are a winner.
I'm not entirely sure why on earth that occured and one machine was working and other just stopped. Both were in use at the time it occured so thats strange. Appreciate that, cheers :) Another crisis averted by QGL |

wanky IP of 169.0?.?.? 169.254.x.x is the IP that windows will give itself in the event it can't find a DHCP server and you haven't set static IP's. DHCP leases on home routers can last for a week, maybe more maybe less so the computer you're on that works probably hasn't had the lease time run out yet so it's still on its old lease. I'd say DHCP on the router fell over and the lease on the other computer ran out, when it tried to renew it couldn't find the DHCP server. If it does this frequently just set a static IP on all your computers, copy off the router IP and increase the last number by 1 for each PC, set the default gateway & DNS server setting in windows to be the same as your routers IP (though some routers don't have DNS servers built in so you might need to set the DNS server to that of your ISP) |

trying to surf with your PC was the first mistake. try a boogie board of surfboard. PC's don't like salt water.
