Working with numbers all day I need a laptop with a keypad installed (I do not want to plug one in via usb),

Anyone know of laptops that offer this other than 'the ones with a wide screen'?

Anyway to search for that specification?

Most have them, you just have to hold an fn function key down to use them.

Any laptop with one separately included is going to be massive (17inchers etc) which defeats the purpose of having a laptop imo. Oversize laptops are such a pain in the ass to lug around.

Go the USB plug-in route imo.

All laptops have widescreens, don't they?

But some of the Asus 15.4" models have the keypad.

Kat, pretty much all your 15.6" wide-screen laptops have number keypads these days. the only ones that don't are Dell. Acer does, Asus does, HP + Comapaq does, and so do some of the new model Toshiba's.

working at Officeworks, a couple of my favorite are:

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with plugging one in via usb or hitting the Fn + numpad key or whatever your model calls it? Do you need to quickly switch between letters & numbers?

I love my 17" wide screen laptop but yeah, it's pretty heavy. I bought it to mainly move around the house from room to room, not take on the road with me so it suits my needs rather awesomely.

There is nothing wrong with a usb plug in one, but it will be used to travelling to clients so I would prefer as little plug ins as possible.
By the looks of it, a plug in is the only way to go, especially if I want to keep it below $1k

Asus make one Model F50Z I think.

If you want it below $1k then yes you will have to purchase a plug-in one.
Seriously just pay the extra money and up your fees a little bit to work it into the budget and then reduce the fees??? Once the extra cost of the laptop has been paid for.

I'm on an Asus M51s 15.4 laptop with "full" keyboard i.e. numbers, + - . top RHS. I know it's not a big thing but i LOVE having a numpad when i'm doing work. It's a year old now so don't know what the current model is but yeah, i doubt you'll get one for less than a thousand

i picked up a Toshiba L500d satellite on Sunday for 1100 17" screen with the number pad. runs very nice 4gig of ram helps and its not huge and chunky and is bloody light compared to my old 19" hp piece of s***.

only problem is only has 2 usb ports standard, other than that great for the price.

If it is under $1k I can write it off during that year. That's my main reason for wanting to do it. It's not that I can't afford to pay a few hundred extra to get a better one.

I guess I will shift my focus to a lappie than can support a VM onboard. f*** I hate proprietary software >:|

These days a lot of manufacturers are refering to them as notebooks instead of laptops aren't they? :)

FYI Kat, a lot of the 15.4" and 15.6" laptops now have keypads. My Girlfriend just picked up an Asus u50vg which is 15.6" and it has one.

It also has the coolest thing I've ever seen... lights in the touchpad that follow your finger as you move it.

This is 100% true but IMO you shouldn't be making business decisions like suitability of core systems based on tax outcomes.

Remember that the write-off isn't really as big a deal as it sounds - on a thousand dollars you'll get a net benefit of about 300 bucks depending on how much tax you pay. Compared to a $1,001 laptop you're only ahead by 200 dollars, which you'll get back in later years anyway.

A 200 dollar early tax break just wouldn't be a consideration for choosing a computer I was using to demo s*** to clients with.

Just my 50 cents anyway; good luck on the laptop hunt :)

Massively confused right now.

But that's OK (and not unusual), good luck with the laptop hunting.

I'd go the USB numpad road. You have to carry your lappy in a case anyway, easy to put the keypad in there. I always carry a plugin mouse too because I hate those finger-pad thingies - would just be another item.

I'm with the crowd that >~15" is a pain in the arse. Especially for international travel.

Get a laptop and then get something like this:
