Hey dudes,

The rock band I'm in have just released our EP, Double Negative, to the masses. Its seven tracks (with some fluff thrown in for good measure) of alternative rock and would be awesome if you could check it out. We recorded it in February and have been getting it mixed and mastered and finally printed.

If you're even inclined to buy one :P there's a link to PayPal on the EP page. Its only ten bucks and we have 1000 copies so won't run out anytime soon (well, here's hoping we do!).

Anyway, really excited to finally have released our debut EP and hope you all enjoy it.

Well produced and recorded. Not quite enough melody for me, and not heavy enough to make up for it, but not bad overall.

There's my music critique for the day!

Thanks mate. For our first professional recording we're happy enough with the sound, however, in the future we have more of an idea of what we want out of the mix and master. Most notably a more rounded, slightly bigger sound as this was tightened up a bit more than we would have liked in the end.

That being said, we're pretty happy with it and it sounds great on a big stereo :)

Grats 3dee, really nice sound and I like overall tone to the vocals. I understand what you mean about over-tightened.

Who did your cover art? I really like it.

Thanks guys! I actually did the art and the website, which is great cause we don't have to outsource and be even more broke :D

We're playing at The Zoo on September 11th for Dear April's EP launch if anyone's keen to come along and rock out. We have some new material for it too.

Hey jim, can I ask if the PayPal site sent you back to our "thanks" page? Haven't bought my own EP to test it :P

I've already forgotten :( - but I do recall a rather wide yellow button I think that said something weird like 'Back to N.J Bedford & N.F Dash & J.H Harden & R.W Harvey' which really looked like a lawyers's company name or something heh

Yeah thats our partner name. Its a bit messy in PayPal, you can;t seem to set a "trading name" separately from your partner/business name. ><

Nice work on the website! Had a listen but I have s*** sound at work, will give it a better tun later when I'm home.

Also, there's a developer program (free from memory) where you can test paypal integration without performing transactions mate.

Oh cool. I'll have to check that out. I might also look at getting the secure HTTP enabled on our host and have it integrate better when going back to the Thanks page cause down the track we'll have a bit of merch so multiple items.

Not bad at all 3dee

Inadvertantly started the new EA Need For Speed "Shift" trailer while listening to your Balloon, so I quickly muted the EA track and had a most enjoyable moment :)

Influences from Tool & Rush?

Like the bass in Balloon

Thanks hermi. Yeah Balloon was one they had before I joined last year. They started playing it a week or two after joining and I'm just like "OMG THAT RIFF IS AWESOME". Just riffed the drums and turned out great, though my original drum part (before recording) was a bit different.

As for influences, mine are mostly Rush, Incubus, RHCP and Muse. The other guys are into Karnivool, Tool, Dredg, Finch etc (more on the alternative/metal side they are). DLC are one of our favourites.

Apparently stu from DLC still had their old home demo CD in their car stereo only a few months ago and we're like "NO NO NO we have a *new* CD now :)"

Nice... Kinda strikes me as a cross between 10 Years and Tool. I'm definitely going to pirate this.

Your sound and band name is extremely familiar... have you played the Zoo much before? If so I think I have seen you play. Heck, I may have even met you.

I'd buy the EP if you had a cheaper digital version of it, I have no desire for CD's cluttering up my house.

Not much but we played on 19th Dec last year with Sunflower.

We'll have it on iTunes in a few weeks (not sure when it all goes up). Not sure of the cost though.

Singer reminds me of Brian Moloko unfortunately. Not very impressed with the production. Band sounds good tho, would probably sound 100x better live.

A cheaper version than buying the cd for $12.50? Buy the cd, rip it and throw it away. What a weak excuse.

How cheap is cheap anyway? How cheap does a digital version need to be before you'd think about buying it? Chances are you'd spend more on lunch or buying a pitcher of beer.

$10 for a CD is awesome. These guys are probably making f*** all out of the sales too (When you think about how much it'd cost for studio time/cd pressing/printing).

Sigh

I have a feeling the full iTunes download ends up being about the same price cause of the iTunes pricing stuff.

Hit the nail on the head. Every cent we make is going toward the EP launch show, then after that itll be paying off what we spent getting everything recorded, mixed and mastered, not to mention the CDs themselves. You gotta wanna do it to spend the money. That being said, what we've paid on this EP is nothing compared some bigger Aussie bands pay to get their's done by bigger and better producers and mastering etc.

All in the name of rock though. Fken love doin shows, regardless of the money.

Awesome. We've got a meeting with Brookside Music to possibly get a consignment deal for them to carry the EP in the new release wall with posters and they would play it in store, so we hope that goes well!

Good luck with it man.

Just finished listening to the EP. I like it, but I definitely prefer the heavier songs (Balloon, PST, Final Call)

Thanks. We like to be a "flexible" band in that regard. A lot of our music is based off just riffing and some general idea of what we want out of music, but we'll go for different styles if they sound good.

We have some ideas in our new material which are quite varied, one where I'm using brushes in the beginning and its a bit swing-like, for example. You would like our first complete song for the "new album".

The songs we made after I joined were Sleeping In Denial and Final Call. Its pretty diplomatic in terms of how we create songs. We all have an equal contribution and say in how songs turn out, which is the best way I think.

Dude you guys have a really great sound going. I'll be definately buying your CD next week if I still can.

I got a mate of mine who's been in and out of the studio for a couple of months now. After listening to his stuff i'm starting to really enjoy listening to up and coming bands.

Stick with it and no doubt you'll be touring with Karnivool and Mammal and the likes in no time.

Yeah I must admit, before I joined this band, I was oblivious to the Brissy (and Australian) rock/alternative rock scene. I had been playing for a rock n roll cover band doing functions, shows, parties, gala balls etc, but never really went to gigs etc of bands in the valley and whatever. Consequently I've met a lot of great musicians and good people too.

Thanks! As far as our music style, we don't really confine ourselves to a particular sub-genre of rock or anything. As I mentioned before, we tend to just riff and if it sounds interesting or fun, we just jam and maybe try writing some lyrics and see how it comes out. If its good we keep it and refine, if its not then no matter. I think that's probably one thing I enjoy being in this band, the fact that we love a lot of different styles and won't trap ourselves in one style of rock like a lot of bands can do.

One example is a new song that we're working on. Singer was playing one of the riffs and a fast tom and snare alternating rhythm just came out of nowhere. It ended up sounding a bit Musey which was fun, but the part ended up sounding pretty sweet and was still our own piece and my own innocently conceived drum part.

The other thing we seem to do is thrown in odd time signatures but they end up very accessibly I think :) I (N)ever Wanted is 11/8, Balloon has a 5/4 pre-chorus and our new song has some 2/4 and 1/4 bars thrown in between 4/4 :P
