A rollout of 100mbit fibre internet in Tasmania will cost an average of $20,000 per customer taking up the service, based on current take-up rates.

Article.

Holy f***, $700m to connect up an estimated 34,000 premises.

Woo-hoo massive infrastructure that future governments can sell off to pay for current governments debts!

its never going to happen, ever
Tasmanians get access to the ABG already via Satellite - they dont need fibre

But they are rolling the fibre out to alot more than that right?, eventually, everything will come down the fibre, or at least it should, phone, internet, tv, should all eventually be put down the fibre, doesnt make sense to do it any other way.

20k per house figure is based on 17% take-up initially isn't it?

So its more like 3-4k per house if you are taking the "long view" that it will eventually replace the copper network completely. That sounds much more reasonable - consider that we just threw a few thousand cash at each household on a f***ing whim, to fight a recession we didn't end up having.

I'm much happier with a new network if we're going to blow money as a nation.

3k would be much more reasonable, thats what the govt is spending per satellite install where I work
most of that money is the sat modem, sending a tech out to install and configure it

if the govt spends that 3k per house on infrastructure rather than contractors, they could get some returns on it by charging a monthly fee to the service providers

...based on current take-up rates.
Does everyone in Tasmania live within 4.5km of the exchange or have cable to their premises? I don't think you can really use current take-up rates as a fair gauge, as we have a poor roll-out of cable and ADSL has range issues.

Why you people whinging about this.

They're spending $700 million to construct 750 aboriginal homes.

Now THAT is a gross waste of money.

Probably $50k worth of materials in the homes. $950k crap.

All round fail.

they'll trash the houses anyway, thats what always happens with govt housing and s*** that people get for free because they dont care about it

I wonder though, do all people in Tasmania use twin monitors or do both of their heads just focus on the one screen?

How are they managing to do that?, assuming they already own the land, thats a pretty awesome house, even with having to buy the land.

Shouldn't the article read that it would cost 20,000 apple crates to connect a Tasmanian to the fibre NBN?

hahahha.

Isn't the majority of the $700m being spent on backhaul?

34000 homes is the test case isn't it? There are 500,000 people in TAS.

Opec - This is no surprise. Money always seems to disappear in indigenous projects before anything actually happens.

Doesn't Tas have like the lowest income in the Country? I doubt their take up will be anywhere near the average, their economy is mostly rural down there.
