Hey guys, needs some quick advice.
I have an N95 that is just over a year old. I applied to get an extended once off warranty as it was playin up a bit and ive had a lot of trouble with it in the past. I took it into the service centre and they have rung me up to say its void of warranty as its water damaged. It has never been wet?!? Anyone know how this could happen or more importantly if I can argue a case to get them to replace it or something? Its my last chance at work under warranty... Cheers guys! |

This happened to me with a Sony Cybershot camera, worst thing was they then came after me for money for invalid warranty claim, needless to say they are still waiting for payment.... |

There was a guy on whirlpool that had the same thing happen with an iPhone, claimed it had never been wet etc etc. Turns out, one of his kids spilt water on it from a cup or something and it was wiped up and no one ever told him.

left your phone in your pants pocket while having a shower? Run for a train or bus with your phone in your pocket and your sweaty nerd legs got a bit steamy?
Fact is, for them to claim water damage either there's evidence of corrosion on the mainboard or the ingress sensors have detected water. Doesn't matter if its your fault or not, water's been in there. |

Apparently most phones have a strip inside that changes color when it gets wet, hence they know when it has had water damage. Apple are now expanding on this to include recording of heavy impacts/drops presumably by using the accelerometer and then reviewing this log when a phone is dropped off for a warranty job.

Yeah, but that's Apple right. Expect zero service and you'll be disappointed.
I have a mate with Vodafone full insurance, he's dropped / lost / drowned nearly 10 phones and had them replaced each time. (he does spend several hundred a month though). |

I wonder if taking a phone from a super-cool airconditioned car into a stinking hot day would cause enough condensation to show water damage?

You shower with your pants on? On the floor in the bathroom, douchebag. Yeah, but that's Apple right. Expect zero service and you'll be disappointed. Wait, this is a story about an N95...as for Apple's service I walked into Robina with an intermittent fault and a few cracks on my case and they replaced it instantly. |

On the floor in the bathroom, douchebag.Cause we all gathered that from your sentence. Wait, this is a story about an N95...as for Apple's service I walked into Robina with an intermittent fault and a few cracks on my case and they replaced it instantly. He is talking about the accelerometers. |

Cause we all gathered that from your sentence. Well I certainly wouldn't have thought the logical conclusion would be that somebody showers in their pants. I take mine off before having a shower - do you? anyone had this happen to them and seccessfully argued their case? I heard a story about a guy who tried to refute his warranty rejection by pulling his phone apart, photographing the process and trying to prove there was no water damage. However, by pulling his phone apart he voided the warranty anyway |

next time you get your phone wet just put it in a bowl of rice and chuck it in the oven on low heat (40~ degrees) for an hour

Nokia is mediocre when I dealt with them but that was a long time ago at their service center in the city.
They wont just swap it out, they will send it off most likely, however if I was you I would ask for proof that there is water damage on the phone. Other than that, insurance through your home/contents insurance? |

Apparently most phones have a strip inside that changes color when it gets wet Yep dropped my last N95 in a drink. It's under the battery next to the sim card, goes pink if it has been in contact with water. Didn't even bother argueing cause a) the girl was hot and b) I was still drunk when I went to buy a new one. |

corrosion is easily seen on the MB as a blue greenish powdery stuff (i've never seen or heard of water sensors in a phone because its so simple to tell when a phones been wet) I have had mixed success using an ultrasonic cleaning tank if you can get access to one failing that you can crack it open and have a go with with metho and a toothbrush...
you have 0 chance getting a water damaged phone warrantied, sorry dude. |

I can verify this is true for Blackberry Bold. A buy here has killed his by his missus putting his work pants through the wash without checking for the contents first, it died of a horrible death of course. Pulled the phone batteries off, and that's a strip on the phone that changed to red. I checked the other working Blackberry Bold and the strip is actually blue. That's one way of them being able to tell if it's been wet and there by void the warranty. |

Cause we all gathered that from your sentence. I did. Also, suck it up. Short of requesting a report from the service centre detailing where/amount of damage you have nothing to go on. |

Examples of the iPhone water sensors, one in the headphone port and one in the dock connector:

My boss has an iPhone but he goes kayaking every morning and was worried about the iPhone so we got him a Sonim X3.....indestructable phone, comes with an unconditional 3yr warranty. You can drive over this thing with your car, submerge it etc and its supposed to keep going. Needless to say first time he went under with the phone it stopped working. We're waiting to see how good the warranty is.

Babies / toddlers like sucking on phones. They like the air flow and the hard slick surface an conveinient shape, and they oxidize the copper
I took my mrs's nokia to one of those shopping centre isle phone guys, he opened it up, cleaned it all up an it was good as new - for some token payment. Said he gets them in all the time, usually people complain that the audio is cutting out, he ask if they have toddlers and gets to work (voiding warranty, but that's dead anyway) he gave me an old demo handset he had that he cleaned up. My daughter loved having her own proper flip phone and "no copper. Copper bad for babies" |

yes, all that considered... what about nokias service...I went to the Nokia service centre in Spring Hill. Had dropped my phone and the screen was smashed and the body scuffed. It was out of warranty but they put a new body on the phone and replaced the screen free of charge. I guess that is an exception though, not the norm. |

I don't think it's that bad for something you always carry on you, can be quite fragile, extremely inconvenient if lost/damaged and you still have to pay a contract on if you lose/break it. $120 a year to know that if I lose or break my sparkly new phone, I'll get a brand new one without drama? Sounds good to me. Is this something telco's offer normally, or do you usually have to ask for it? I've never had it offered to me in the past. |
