So i've been a big IE7 lover, right from when i first started using it in Feb 2006 (Beta 2 iirc). It was awesome.
Now i've switched to IE8 (damn windows updates) and it feels terrible, like firefox.
What's your opinion?

It's better and faster than IE 7. No more drugs for you.

It wins on the sole basis that it supports large file downloads, thus making it the only version of IE that actually seems like it was developed after the year 2000

IE8 is way faster to start up than firefox for me but at the moment I'm trying out the latest version of safari. I like IE8 though and if it had a plugin like firefox's netusage meter I'd probably switch to IE8. I like to keep an eye on my usage since it seems telstra are still counting downloads off gamearena & telstra.com as metered usage for my account and I'm far too lazy to ring them up sit on hold for an hour.

More than anything else, IE8 is good because its much closer to CSS standards compliance than 7, which was miles ahead of 6.

I use it as my browser these days because I'm just too lazy to keep Firefox up to date, and Firefox without a bazillion extensions is like rooting whoop's mum - sure it gets the job done but its just not satisfying.

Hated IE7, surprisingly don't mind IE8, feels a bit more polished to me... plus it's designed to be standards compliant so thats a bonus.

Colour coded tabs are a nice touch, but that's about it.

Net usage meter ftw.

Reread Jimbo - I didn't complain that it didn't keep itself up to date, my probably unfair complaint is that I have to agree to them and click on s*** to make it happen. The other day I didn't even have Firefox open and a UAC prompt f***ing shoved itself in my face to agree to an update - thought that was kind of rude.

Don't go all 3dee on me cos I don't use teh foxes man, I have to work today!

IE8's much better, but I still find it horrendously slow on anything but a new computer compared to all the other browser (most notably Chrome).

The main problem is it takes so damn long to "initialise" itself and each tab. In Chrome as soon as I hit the (+) button the tab is ready to go.

Well I re-read your post hoggles and I'd probably make the same response to it again. To me it implied that you have to manually make it check for updates yourself or something, not that you didn't like the fact that it's updates required elevated privs - which incidentally, they don't if you install it as such. Also how do other browsers require any less elevated privs to update if installed system-wide anyway?

I don't care what browser you use, I have no crazy bias in any direction about web browsers :) I use a mix of IE, firefox and chrome depending on what I'm doing and they all s*** me in one way or another pretty regularly

Curious - I have win7 loaded up with s***loads of software, a couple of months old. When I hit a new tab I reckon its about 200ms tops until I see it - how long is it taking you to see a new tab? What do you load in a new tab, a URL or the default s***?

WELL RE-READ AGAIN JIM. AND IF YOU DON'T SEE IT HOW I MEANT IT YOU'LL KEEP RE-READING IT UNTIL YOU DO, OR NO f***ING DINNER FOR YOU c***.

Well, I know its cheating, but IE8 keeps itself up to date with Winders Update so I just install the updates with them when I shutdown the computer. I see them in my update history when I bother to check it, but I need to do nothing about it.

Compatibilty of add-ons through the update cycle is my major gripe jimmah. As I said, I personally find Firefox stale, crusty and unsatisfying without addons. But the f***ing things break half the time with browser updates, which is nobody's fault I guess but the whole fox ownership thing (FOR ME, OTHER c*** MAY WANT ITS BABIES STILL) became more of a hassle that it was worth and I just stopped using it about three OS installs ago.

how is that firefox's fault?

Firefox updating is like a 2 click process - looking at my work PC I have it on 'automatically download and install the update' so I dont even think its that; I think it's totally worth it so you know you're always running the latest secure version. IE/Windows updates is about the same for me (because I manually verify each update before installing it).

Nah f*** this I'm not having another discussion with you jerks about why I personally like or dislike software - I don't really care that much, just made an observation, explained that I PERSONALLY find it more of a hassle to maintain. If you don't agree then I am more than happy with that, your mum is delicious btw, and not at all stale like whoop's.

I waste enough time on this forum already!

Just the "New tab" page. But this is on a Celeron 2GHz, 1Gb RAM and an Intel onboard video chip (i.e. generic s***ty work pc).

It does the same on my dad's tho not as bad (Core 2 duo, more ram).

I've always found using IE to be sluggish and frustrating.

I'm with Jim and trog on this. Updating Firefox is practically automatic. 'Too lazy' is not possible in this instance.

I like Chrome but I just can't live without my add-ons.

2nd'd. My new tab is basically instant running win 7 64bit and a normal install.

I find IE8 to be fine. I'm not a fussy user. Have tried firefox in the past and didnt like the long initial load times (when you first start it up). That may have changed in recent version but IE8 seems to be quick and do what i want it to so cbf changing.

Chrome is good enough for me. I've never gotten into the "add-ons" thing which seems to be popular with Firefox, so Chrome is supar fast.

Hoggie - I think you'll find that Firefox auto-updates itself.

I use IE8 exclusively now except on my Poobuntu box which doesn't have IE8 obviously so I use FireFox. Times gone by I would use the one browser with all it's addons to make life easier but now I can't be f***ed. When I sit at the computer I want to click the thing that says Internet and I want to browse to my fav sites (qgl, redtube) with minimal fuss.

I've gone from a PC tinkerer to someone that just wants s*** to work when I use it.. time for a Mac.

I use chrome at work, firefox at home mainly because of netusage meter... however now after switching to TPG it doesn't wanna work.

However we did actually connect up to the service before it was technically done.
(we connected up 2 days before getting the "its ready" email and it just worked... so the usage meter may have not updated or something *shrug*)

Anyone got it working correctly with TPG gimmie some tips!

I have no opinion on the subject, I'm a Safari user.

I rolled IE8 out as part of our new SOE a few weeks back and haven't had any complaints.

wtf are the different coloured tabs? I've noticed a few times I'll have green tabs or pink tabs but never really taken the time or been that curious as to find out why they are the way they are.

Hardly used IE8 at all but I'm pretty sure it just assigns a colour to each domain, so that all pages from the same site are obvious.

Or the dreaded Registry.

Yeah I've always wondered why its colouring my tabs. I think that I need to click it to tell it I've seen whats updated on the page or something..

Close but incorrect.

What its doing is grouping links that you open from a page (or a page from a page) together. This means that when I open QGL, everything that I click on ion a new tab from QGL is all coloured the same and is a single 'group'.

Once I worked it out I use it a lot. At lunch for example, I open a new tab and go to QGL and check some s*** out, do a bunch of page surfing (f*** I hate that term for some reason) and end up with 10 new tabs open. When its time to get serious again, I just close the group and my work-related pages are still there.

Works well for searches too - new tab, search, tab-open the best responses, and when you've got your answer just close the group. You could probably open a new browser window to achieve the same thing I guess?

Just because it's your personal opinion doesn't make it right or justified. Some people share the opinion it's okay to touch little children and so they do (I'm betting that they mostly use IE8 too) but that doesn't mean that they are right or justified in doing them.

What you have to remember is that IE is s***. It's always been s***, except for that small period of time that Netscape started to suck so we all flocked to it. IE is s*** because Windows is s***, even though most people who use firefox also use windows. Windows is s*** because Microsoft is s***. DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS!
