f*** me.. Seen the second one.
That first one though, if I had EVER carried on like that as a kid, my parents would have beaten me senseless and I can't say I wouldn't do just that myself if I ever had a kid that carried on like that. Guess that's what happens when you don't discipline your kids. |

Guess that's what happens when you don't discipline your kids.Or maybe, it is far more likely it has nothing to do with parenting, and more to do with personality/mental issues (they are both classified as one and the same). |

I don't reckon in that second vid that family was any different to any other family with teenage kids I've seen. The only diff is that this generation is equipped with digital cameras. |

kids these days need good old fashion threats, spankings, mouth with soap.. i was born too late for the whip so my mum made do, seriously the amount of high schoolers that act like complete f*** ups can only be blamed on parenting tbh.. i swear the kids coming through school after softer every year

kids these days need good old fashion threats No Emphatically NO That's where it all went wrong. There were no consequences. People just made threats instead of a following through with a good time and tried open hand across the back of the hand, upside the head (slap to the face) or slap on the arse. Don't get me wrong, I am against abuse in all forms. If Teachers were still allowed that privilege and I do mean privilege, modern society would be a better place. last edited by HERMITech at 23:03:46 21/Jun/09 |

No no, the problem isnt the parents.
Its now illegal to beat your kids. This was the key to the discipline & hardiness of your kids. |

If that video is actually real that kid either A) has some serious issues or B) has some seriously f***ing stupid parents that never tanned his ass.
Honestly these parents that refuse to spank a kids arse are just setting those kids up for greater problems down the track. Obviously you don't have to beat the kid senseless but sending them to their room with a stern talking to doesn't do f*** all. You have been a naughty little boy Jonny go take a time out in that room full of your toys... yeah there is some serious punishment. Mind you disapline isn't all about spanking the kid when they cross the line but you have to have consequences in place that the kid genuinely is (for lack of a better way of putting it) fearfull of. Whats that little Jonny you just bashed your sister in the head with a shovel? Ok thats naughty go to your room and sit amougst al your toys for 10 minutes. What did the kid learn here? f*** ALL ... if anything he can be a right f***ing s*** and nothing of any real consequence happens. So what happens to that kid in 15, 16, 18 years time when they just feels like being a d******* or someone pisses them off over nothing? Hell they haven't been taught s*** about consequences for their entire life. |

Thats kind of one of the problems right there. Crying do-gooders paint every arse tanning as some kind of horrific horrific torture just the same as anti pot whinners paint pot as the evil killer and destroyer of society.
Good disapline of children is made up of a number of things, none of which include flogging the f*** out of them. However you are only going to get so far with a time out mat and thats where a tanned arse comes in. Imho there is one thing much more important though and that is consistancy with rules and punishment for transgressing those rules and that takes disapline of the parents part. No matter what kind of day you are having or what mood you are in you can't allow that to affect the rules and punishment on given day. Take my ex for example on a good day when her mood is layed back my boy could get away with all kinds of things (nothing to serious). However if she was having a s*** day she would explode at him for the smalest of stupid things. What did this achieve? Well it ment he never knew where the line was drawn with her and never really knew where he stood making things very confusing for him which is as unfair as f***. It also never taught him f*** all about what was acceptable behaviour because the line was constantly moving from day to day. Of course in his case it would frustrate the hell out of him leading to a lot of agro on his part because he felt persecuted and felt he could never do anything right. I am lucky personally because my boy knows when he does something around me he can garentee what my reaction to it will be so he is alot more relaxed. He knows I won't blow up at him or whack him just because I had a bad day. However he does know that there is a very very clear line he isn't to cross with me and guess what he doesn't cross it. He is to old for all that BS now anyway but we have a good understanding and any issues that crop up he is more than willing and able to deal with them because he has a good grip of the possible consequences. My boy isn't perfect but I was f***ed if I was going to allow him as a child to get away with what ever the f*** he wanted to it just wasn't going to happen. I would of been doing him a disservice by not being firm with disapline and tanning his ass when he crossed that final line taught him that certain kinds of behaviour were simply not acceptable. In saying all this though I can honestly say in his entire life I would of only whacked him maybe a doxen times tops so not even twice a year.... now either it works or he was just a f***ing fast learner. last edited by Lolkidgloves at 19:05:48 22/Jun/09 |

Most of you just don't get it do you?
Violence for the sake of violence isn't what is being suggested as a form of punishment/deterent. That wow kids parents should have never let the kid get to such a reactive state without imposing consequences for his actions earlier. Then, when they finally did, he'd probably be better equipped to deal with the fact that his parents were imposing a punishment on him and accept it for what it was instead of carrying on like a spoilt 2 year old throwing a tanty. |

I'll smack my kid if I want to, if you think you have any right to xast judgement on that you can get f***ed.
That said, corporal punishment isn't what is wrong with that video. Its tha fact that a child was allowed - allowed - to play so much WoW that when the plug was finally pulled they had a complete f***ing melt down. |

Just watch the original video and my god that guy was going crazy.
I too found it funny that he went into his closet and then came back out not 2 seconds later and tried to shove the remote up his bum while wearing underwear. It was also funny how he lost his clothes when he was under the covers and that he couldn't get out of the covers for a little while as well, he was trapped. |

Yes because Violence is the best teaching method.I haven't watched this video or read this thread other than a bit of it - but pain is an effective teacher, because evolution has wired us to avoid pain. It's why, when dogs are bad, you hit them with a rolled up newspaper or whatever and they learn not to do it. Amazingly! it works on kids as well. There is a really interesting read in Heinlein's 'Starship Troopers' (the book, not the movie) about the effectiveness of corporal punishment. Definitely swayed my opinion enough to make me stop discarding it as sheer barbarism, which I guess I always have. |

think about that sentence for a bit. the reason prison exist is because there is no physical punishment and because prison is punishment in itself. if there was physical punishment then prison would be replaced by lots of hospitals. |

Maybe you didnt understand the last line.
Pedophiles not only suffer prison but the stigma associated with child sex crimes stays with them forever. Nobody will hire a Pedophile and nobody wants a Pedophile as a friend/lover yet Pedophile crimes are increasing. The deterrent does not teach that the crime should not be commited. |

And faceman if you had a f***ing clue you'd know that using Pedo's as an example there is stupid as hell. It's pretty well documented there is NO reliable form of rehab for a pedo.
As for comparing corporal punishment to torture thats just utterly f***ing retarded. It's the kind of grasping at any old f***ing straw twits do when they can't actually make a reasonable arguement against something. You make a spanked ass sound like chinese water torcher and that just makes you look like a f***ing dumbass. |

Im talking about how punishment does not prevent crime. The fear of "gettin a beatin" only creates the fear of "gettin a beaten" it doesnt teach the lesson. Using Violence as Punishment or as a teaching method is just as pointless as gaining information through torture. |

If punishment deterrents actually worked then there would be no need for Prisons. As pointed out, we're talking about corporal punishment, which prison is not. Read Starship Troopers, it's explained really well in that. It's just scifi/fiction so is obviously not research, but it's a very interesting thought exercise. Pedophiles not only suffer prison but the stigma associated with child sex crimes stays with them forever. Nobody will hire a Pedophile and nobody wants a Pedophile as a friend/lover yet Pedophile crimes are increasing. This is a strawman (man I keep having to say that) |

Man you guys must read too fast and think too slow. No wonder the Illuminati are all over you. You're far too blatant about this s*** to be serious, or you are enjoying your role as psyscho paranoid c*** too much; you're starting to get sloppy. This just looked contrived. |

Can you not understand that Punishment is a deterrent ?the point I made, which you replied to, was 'pain is an effective teacher'.. so I'm not just talking about any punishment, I'm talking specifically corporal |

Does corporal punishment work? I would have thought, from a classical conditioning perspective, that the punishment comes way too long after the behaviour for the two to become associated.

Pain is an effective teacher for me. I've learned not to grab things that have just been welded, it kind of hurts.

If it reduces the undesirable behavior then it works. If it doesn't then you'd assume corporal punishment doesn't work in that case. |

B.H. - That may be true with v. young children and animals.
Not so with rational/logical processing adults/adolescents. |

Not sure how much classical conditioning would apply, would think it would be more operant conditioning through punishment. If it reduces the undesirable behavior then it works. If it doesn't then you'd assume corporal punishment doesn't work in that case. I think you're right in that it couldn't be classical. But even if it's operant conditioning, I'd still assume that the punishment occurs to far after the behaviour to have an effect. With operant conditioning you typically look at the things that happen directly before and directly after the behaviour, not weeks or days (or even hours) after. Also, you begged the question :) B.H. - That may be true with v. young children and animals. Well, not at all. Conditioning works on everyone. Whoops example is classical conditioning, cracking your nails (or learning to stop cracking your nails) is operant. Sadly, "rational/logical processing" doesn't really have anything to do with it. |
