Anyone having problems with their carrier signal/mode since the 3.0 update?

I've actually had 3.0 installed since it was released to developers and no problems but now in the last 3-4 days (which coincides with the public release), my Telstra signal is still 5 bars but now drops to EDGE a lot.

I will put it on Airplane mode and off again, itll find Telstra Next-G (3G icon) then after 30 or so seconds, it'll drop that and then reconnect in EDGE only (E icon).

Ever since I bought one its been really good on reception and never once dropped out or gone to EDGE, yet since the public release (despite not even touching my install), its now f***ing up.

Any ideas???

Nah it was doing it at work and at home too (25 mins driving between)...

I just restored, so I'll see how it goes.

no problems.

I don't drop to edge ever. I think I set an option somewhere so that doesn't happen.

I never used to anyway. It was only after the public release of 3.0 it started doing that.

It *seems* so far to be sticking to 3G after the restore. Could have been something funky going on.

Is "EDGE" different from just 2G? I'm with Optus, and it's not rare for the 3G to switch to an "o".

o is the GPRS icon (which is SUPER old)

E is the EDGE which is "2.5"G

Billy - Optus don't have EDGE. Ever since 3.0 I've noticed significantly better reception though, wierd co-incidence.

Yeah Optus are s***c***s Billy,

True story regarding reception though, I always drive the ICB from Coro to the Merlo Bowen Hills Exit, and every single time I went through the tunnel at herston - it would drop out.

Anyway, went through on Friday after updating, and it didn't drop out !!

Only Telstra has edge in Australia. It's 2.5G apparently.

Like I said, o is GPRS (oooold), E is EDGE (still pretty s***), 3G is 3G or 3.5G (Next-G).

If you're getting a GPRS connection, then ouch...

I restored and it seemed to be fine but now its dropping the 3G connection again to EDGE. As I said, before a few days ago (and also after having 3.0 for about 2 weeks before that), my Telstra connection was either full 3G signal or none at all (such as in Central station or something).

The thing is that EDGE costs a f***load so I don't want to be charged while on it even though I have a 300MB datapack...

tequila, do you have a new roof in your house? Does it have insulation? Cause the insulation used for houses these days seems to block the signal.

I had this issue in Roma st all mornign sunday. Went there for breakfast with the fam and my phone was stuck on Edge (as identified by the E icon) and only had 1 bar or sometimes none.

This has never happened before. Interestingly someone else there on telstra with an iphone was on a 3g tower that I couldnt get onto, I wondered if it was cause I'm using the tethering thingo

Hmm so it was on EDGE all morning. Then just then I decided to have a glance at my Network settings and the fkn 3G setting was off >_< I must have turned it off and not put it back on when testing s***

Its now still on 3G so hopefully its all good. Mind you, 3G setting was on before restore during all those EDGE problems.

Well it's not uncommon for my signal to switch to "o", but I certainly get 3G the majority of the time (and rarely I get nothing but phone signal). Is this similar to other Optus customers?

Edge is enhanced GPRS, only Telstra support it. Optus/Vodafone revert to the next mode down - GPRS.

Mine used to stay on 3G all around the offices at my workplace. Since the morning of the 3.0 update my iphone has degraded to E in all but a few offices.

Is this edge data not included in the normal data plan?

yea billy that sounds pretty much similar to me. I live down the Gold Coast now, and most of the time I get 3G, but about 20% of the time im on "o". Apart from actually wanting to download stuff or use any of the internet heavy applications, i dont really notice it much.

Scoggex if we enable 3G only, what happens when it can't do 3G, does it just drop out? Or does it make it do magical things and get 3G even in ipswich?
