Check this out for a laugh

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/06/18/politics/main5096450.shtml

If you're planning to apply for a job with the city of Bozeman, Montana, be prepared to hand over much more than your references and résumé.

The Rocky Mountain city instructs all job applicants to divulge their usernames and passwords for "any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc."

"Before we offer people employment in a public trust position we have a responsibility to do a thorough background check," Chuck Winn, Bozeman's assistant city manager, told CBSNews.com in an interview on Thursday. "This is just a component of a thorough background check."

Considering all those services are free... couldn't you just create spoof accounts anyway?

At that point ask for the interviewer's usernames and passwords - it's all part of researching your employer. Then sit back and watch the back-peddling and/or stammering about breaches of privacy and inappropriateness of your outrageous request.

I have a mate who works for .gov.au and employees in his area are forbidden from having online profiles at all. Not sure if that applies to all gov employees or just ones in his area? I guess that's the way to handle this sort of thing more diplomatically.

I was forced to create a twitter account at the old place I worked at. Luckily we could do whatever we wanted with it. I just complained how s***ty work was every day.

Unless it's in your contract, they can't force you to not have an online profile, and even then if you don't mention your employer by name, i hardly see how they can do anything about it.

it wasn't too far a stretch of the imagination to see that it was coming.

asking a forum user for his/her passwords is probably going to end up with this kind of applicant not bothering to apply. there's method in the madness
