Yoinked from Bad Astronomer - in case you don't know, the end of the world is nigh-ish, coming in 2012 (according to the Mayan calendar): It shows what looks like about 2 seconds from every single scene in the movie, but lots of cool looking disaster scenes. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the dude that did Independence Day and Day After Tomorrow. |

Used to love Emmerich until he started doing movies like Patriot and Day After Tomorrow. His movies are meant to be about US military saving the world from a sci-fi threat. Moon44, Universal Soldier, Stargate, Godzilla, Independence Day.... thats what I'm looking for from an Emmerich film. Not so thrilled about serious war, or disaster plots.

Pretty sure that guy also did Godzilla... I wonder why they left that out. Should still be good for some sweet effects.
Btw, stupid people who think the world will end because of a calendar. Why doesn't the world end each year when our calendar gets to the end? |

WE DIDN'T LISTEN !@#!
obviously the story will be a load of crap... n stuff like the tagline 'find out the truth 2012' make my eyeballs roll so much they form vortexs... but the apocolyptic scenes of destruction could be nice eye candy. even though i can't help but try n apply real world physics when i see s*** like that n it makes it seem very unplausable. like the flaming rocks falling... they aren't going fast enough! 9.81m/s² ffs! ;D because its not the mayan calendar. yeh coz those primitive mexicans that got wiped out by el nino have so much to teach us about calenders n stuff. they should have narrowed thier awesome prediction powers to predict stuff like el nino & cortez & the fkn flu :P last edited by demon at 11:50:41 19/Jun/09 |

One guy knows something big is about to happen but no one will listen until it's too late. Story will be crap but the effects will be worth it. |

Looks like an OK movie, pretty sure I like every actor I saw in it.
Also, before Faceman gets in here :) Most scholars agree 2012 is just a new age, they didn't make the calendar thinking the world would end, they made it thinking a new age would start then going by constellations. |

haha was just watching that trailer last night.
http://www.loveforlife.com.au/node/101 Planet X is coming... Planet X is considered either an asteroid or a brown dwarf star and is around 5 times the size of the earth. Each orbit of Planet X takes around 3,500 to 3,600 years. "What is known for sure is that a large "Planet X" comet is coming in from behind the sun . It is being covered up/blacked-out by the controlled media but SOHO photos on the web by independent astrophysicists show it to be highly magnetic and already causing massive solar corona ejecta when it passed between Venus and the Sun. When it passes the earth it could do the same, attracting solar ejecta with effects ranging from scorching “fire from the sky” to massive lightening storms and EMP pulses. It could also trigger the pole shift with 300 mile per hour winds, mile high tidal waves, massive earthquakes and unprecedented volcanism creating a “nuclear winter” effect (extreme cold) for years to come. |

Cool trailer. Who cares if the final movie has substance? I'm all for a 2 hour movie of the World getting blown up with tonnes of pretty CG eye candy to boot. ID4 was amusing purely for the stupidity of it + the effects, as long as you ignored the dumb 'lolapple' plot.
Although coming into this thread, I was expecing this instead. f***ing kangaroos etc ;) |

mmm lazy ol' friday afternoons :D normally i wouldn't bother with a faceman post but i'm bored atm.
Planet X is considered either an asteroid or a brown dwarf star and is around 5 times the size of the earth. at around 5 times the size of the earth it's too big to be an asteroid & too small to be brown dwarf star. at that size it would be classified as a planet... prolly why it's often referred to as planet x. it's impossible for an object that big not to have been detected decades ago... pluto which is much smaller was discovered in 1930 by it's gravitational disturbance on more easily seen planets. the whole 'coming in from behind the sun' bulls*** is children's nonsense. hey Dont shoot the messenger ! there is passing on information & then there is regurgitating bulls***... what you are doing is the latter. |

What is known for sure is that a large "Planet X" comet is coming in from behind the sun There are so many flaws in this statement it's just not even funny. So this thing strafes around the sun as it heads straight for earth? Last time I checked, the Earth revolved around the sun, not the other way around. |

He also wrote a chapter about the Mayan calendar is his latest book.
The short story is, the Mayan's calendar system was primitive and, purely because of the way that they added days/years, it had a finite value. This is no different to how we get to the end of December each year, except we were smart enough to assign arbitrary numbers that count up each year and have no limit, eg, 1999 then 2000 (boy! the world didn't end then, either). |

it's impossible for an object that big not to have been detected decades ago What about when your driving along at a set pace an your trying to get a better look at a hottie walking on the side of the road when there is a pole or some other object that keeps blocking a perfect line of sight due to her speed and yours? /thumps table! Dammit Man! If it can happen then, it can happen on a larger scale!!! |

OK, first of all, I'm pretty sure the premise of the movie is that a brown dwarf enters our solar system and causes the effects seen in the movie. The brown dwarf would not be 3-5 times the size of the earth, it would be 3-5 times the size of jupiter, as a brown dwarf is a failed star which are believed to be very common. Also, it would not have already been detected, as they are almost impossible to see outside of the solar system. Now, there are both British and American scientists who beilieve that a brown dwarf IS currently in an orbit outside our solar system. They believe this because of a pattern that has been detected in the frequnecy of comets being sent through our solar system, like a gravity force is effecting them as a heavenly body reaches the same point in it's orbit every so many years. A new telescope is being launched by NASA on November 1st of this year which will be able to see brown dwarfs and one of it's first missions is to look for them close to earth. http://spacespin.org/article.php/90623-wise-telescope-assembled-preparing The mission is also expected to find the coldest stars -- dim orbs called brown dwarfs that are too small to have ignited like our sun. Brown dwarfs are littered throughout our galaxy, but because they are so cool, they are often too faint to see in visible light. The infrared detectors on WISE will pick up the glow of roughly 1,000 brown dwarfs in our galaxy, including those coldest and closest to our solar system. In fact, astronomers say the mission could find a brown dwarf closer to us than the nearest known star, Proxima Centauri, located approximately 4 light-years away. |

Haha, just love the music in that parody trailer, so appropriate.
And yeah, as for Knowing, that was pretty cool if you can ignore the plotline. I'm trying to think of another movie where at 1 hour 50 and I swear, the conversation in the scriptwriters head must have gone something like this: you know what, can't be f***ed writing any more of this script... buuutttt, gotta finish it. Okay, how?. Lets see. Okay. Aliens. That's a start. Abduct the kids. Kay, that fits... alright, noww.... okay let's just blow up the earth, that gets us to the credits pretty quick. Cool. We done? Good. K, that'll do then! Let's go make us a movie! |
