Does anyone here do any kind of martial arts?

I have recently decided i want to get into it for fitness and well being.

Advice from a friend of mine was - start stretching. I have unusually tight legs so i have been waking up 30 mins early and doing stretches morning and night.

I was also told, look around and find something that really appeals to me. Otherwise the dedication wont be there.

After looking around i am pretty set on muay thai and have been looking at local gyms.

Does anyone have any exercises for beginners i can do at home? Other than pushups and situps (which are a must). Also if you do martial arts, what is it and how long have you been doing it?

Valhalla in valley, above the strip joint opposite the arena.

You'd want lots of core strength, so do front and side planks to strength core.

Remember to do your joint rotations and warm up prior to any stretching.

Stretching cold is bad news.

Cheers guys,

Yeah i got a guide off some thai site and have a joint rotation and dynamic stretching routine.

Also have been doing running @ the gym, 5km in 30 minutes landing on the ball of my feet (to work the calves more). Have had sore calves all week :<

Definatley need to build up my core though.

Personally I'd steer clear of johny come latelys (s*** like STEVE SMITH SUPER HAPPY KARATE DOJO and other made up s***). I did Traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu for 5 or so years. Was pretty cool reading into the traditions and whatnot also. It was under a dude who studied with a master in Japan for 10 or so years.

Twas good having a pretty forceful sensai, you push yourself a little bit harder with him screaming at you haha. Some nights where insane though, we'd have to run laps then come back in and do a few hundred pus hups on concrete on our knuckles and then on finger tips using less and less fingers each time.

Lots of training went along with it (exercise along with body training. EG kicking uprights with shins and smacking arms against each other haha, sounds a bit odd but meant you could kick someone a lot harder or block/hit a lot harder without pain).

We also did some weapons training.

They used to do gashaku's also where we'd goto a beach or creek etc and basically exercise and train katas and spar.

I'd love to get back into it, I'm waiting for an operation on my back though before I can get into anything. Even using an exercise bike was screwing me up. One of my nerves is being pinched and it's causing half of my right calf to just drop out and when I was going a bit hard with the exercise it made it a lot worse heh.

Obviously you can't train under a thousand year old guy, I meant style wise I would steer clear of some crud a dude who studied for 6 months under five different styles and created his own style and opens his own dojo. This is the dude here, I was actually under Rob but Ravey visited quite often.

Edit:

Heh, he was even in a movie with Bruce Lee Tower Of Death.

I was just pointing out that there are a lot of guys who will say they studied under every grand master/mma champion/buddha himself, so how is a new comer to sort the Johnny come latelys from the Johnny Badass. (A:research, dont take their word they know their s***)

I did Go Kan Ryu for a while when I was younger, but it wasn't air-conditioned, f*** that... standing half-crouched in sweaty pyjamas for 2 hours...

I did Zen-Do-Kai for 4 years on the north side, it's originally a Bob Jones martial art but in QLD it was under Malcom Anderson.

It was a strong muay thai base with alot of traditional karate influence, as well as some mixed martial arts, all in all it was pretty sweet.

I haven't done martial arts for 5 years or so now, but have been doing yoga for about a year now and its great for core strength and flexibility. Thinking about starting something up again, quite interested in something different like Tong Long or Krav Maga.

yeah, some of the black belts do that.

i was talking more about the jumping from two trucks crashing into each other and being picked up by super neo

its probably good to ease into it seeing as some of the WOds are rediculously hard

take todays for example:

Saturday 090613

Walking lunge 100 ft.
21 Pull-ups
21 Sit-ups
Walking lunge 100 ft.
18 Pull-ups
18 Sit-ups
Walking lunge 100 ft.
15 Pull-ups
15 Sit-ups
Walking lunge 100 ft.
12 Pull-ups
12 Sit-ups
Walking lunge 100 ft.
9 Pull-ups
9 Sit-ups
Walking Lunge 100 ft.
6 Pull-ups
6 Sit-ups

its hard enough just doing 6 pull ups (palms facing out, hands about a shoulder width apart)

I do taekwondo full time (5days week) at Strathpine.. www.factor10.com.au
i do mainly sports training as i have made australian team a few times...

i would recommend dynmaic stretches before classes but long slow stretches in your spare time... just dont push yourself you will get more flexible...
