Hey guys,

At work and our 10year old predictive dialer\server caught on fire this morning and the motherboard has a blown capacitor, I can't beleive the amount of smoke/smell that could have came out of such a little thing.

Anyway, I need to source a replacement motherboard for the motherboard and wondering if you guys can reccomend any Server IT parts shops\suppliers that
could help me get it back online.
If your interested the model number is PEAK 735 VL2G(c).

The only place I can find in google with the part is some dodgey looking store in Sweeden, lol.

Thanks for any help guys.

replacement component for the motherboard

HUH? you generally dont/cant replace components on a motherboard.

I did replace caps on an old amd k7 mainboard and it worked again, but i think I just got lucky.

sorry, yeah it is a full replacement for the motherboard, not just looking to replace the capacitor.

You could try ex-government PC places but for mobo that old I doubt they'll have it. Otherwise, call computer recyclers they might have a full server designated to be recycled that might be functional and therefore you can salvage parts from them.

Good luck. What OS does it run ? Could you image it and run it in a VM ?

Real techs know how to use an soldering iron and replace $0.10c parts before a $300 one :D

When I was doing repair work for a white box manufacturer we were always replacing caps and whatnot.

For warranty repairs? thats pretty dodgy, If i had a dead mainboard under warranty I sure as hell wouldnt want some person just replacing a cap here and there, not saying it wouldnt work again, and I would/have done it for my own stuff.

For an entire PC warranty, it's not like someone returned one mainboard.

If the board looked damaged it'd get replaced but if it was just a bulging cap it'd get replaced also. What do you think you get back from the manufacturers when you put something in for a warranty? It might sometimes be a brand new unit but many it's just a repaired/refurbished one.

Can't just throw out a $100+ part because a 20c bit is broken. You don't replace an entire refrigeration unit in a fridge if a pipe sprung a leak.

oh yeah...

David Mayer at Computer Alliance. 07 3421 3200. 'prolly cost ya boss ~$100

providing none of your ICs got fried in the fire, he can replace caps, relay broken circuit lines in the pcb and the like for ya.

best to take the whole unit in rather than just the mobo for testing.. if the unit is 10 years old and never had a PSU replacement then you're due. if your unit takes a propriatary PSu that can't be bought anymore you'll need Dave to rebuild your old one from scratch.

Thanks for your advice Koops.

We ended up just buying a new one with a C2D and a much needed memory upgrade aswell.

I still have the destroyed board however, i'm going to frame it as a momento to what a stressfull day it was! hahaha.
