Can't you disable the smart detection stuff in the bios? I'd probably plug the drive into another pc via usb and try to get as much as possible off the drive if you can.

It means your HDD is going to die at any time.
Take it back for warranty (if applicable). They should be able to image the data across to the new HDD. Some boards allow you to turn off S.M.A.R.T in BIOS however why the f*** you would want to do this is beyond me. Some wankers believe that it gives them a poofteenth nano second performance gain in boot & read/write access speeds. I say "idiots". |

Yes take your hard drive in to be repaired then wait for the police to knock on your door and arrest you for obscure videos or pics.
Try it in a Drive Caddy ? |

Some wankers believe that it gives them a poofteenth nano second performance gain in boot & read/write access speeds. I say "idiots". well, I am a wanker at the best of times :P it does give ya a performance boost having it off.. though it's a more noticable on s***ty mobos / cheap servers. It's *really* noticable when you're running a SSD drive it's risky stuff, but that's what a data vault is for ;) last edited by koopz at 11:29:39 25/May/09 |

A: Computer Stores do not repair HDD's B: If you keep you kiddie pr0n, then you deserve what you get C: When a company like Seagate recover data after a firmware f***up on HDD's that contain warez and don't bat an eye at what's on there? On this occasion Faceman, I must hand you a cup of "Shut the f*** up" |

i could never decide whether faceman was an ingenious troll account or just an inconceivably f***ing stupid asshat.
guess we know now, haha. edit: anyway when Seagate took a drive from me under warranty recently for a firmware update they sent me a privacy document stating that under no circumstances would they even look at the contents of my hdd, let alone alter them or provide that information to a 3rd party. i'd imagine if they did breach the T&C in that document they'd face some serious lawsuits. last edited by taggs at 12:09:02 25/May/09 |

When you leave your computer there you leave it vulnerable to being searched.
If you dont have any Personal Information on it then Its not a big deal. My hard drive dies i buy a new one and throw it in the bin Mangled. Would never take it to a store. |

Personally I always vaporise my old hard drives completely and then teleport the atoms to a different dimension to make sure that aliens don't get a hold of my personal information. I do that even if I know there is no personal information on a hard drive, just in case I was influenced into putting personal information on there and hiding it while under the effects of a mind-control ray. |
