Ok so usually I can sort out what I need/don't need in a product and find a good deal doing a bit of background research with the google but when it cames to mattresses I have NFI.
What is everyone's experiences with buying a mattress? I want a king size but don't know what I need to go for. Shops like harvey norman/deparment stores look like a total rip. I've found inner-spring king's on greys onlines for like $500, but I have no idea if these are any good compared to the $2000 units. Can anyone recommend me a place to go/what I should spend etc? |

Considering it's your bed where you spend a good portion of your life getting something good is worth it imo.
What's 'good' is really up to you on what feels comfortable but I'd suggest working out how much you are prepared to spend and then get the best you can afford. When you work it out over how many years you're likely to have it the difference between an average one and a good one isn't much. We got a KS from Myer last year and it's awesome, they had good specials on and saved quite a bit so wait for a good deal. |

my kingsize was $4k for the matress alone, $500 wouldn't get you much but s***
have bedded many women on it, conceived my first kid on it money well spent imo go out to somewhere like 'Makin matresses' (wasnt around when I bought mine) and lay on a few, take your time. in a big warehouse like theirs you wont need to be in a hurry you need to be able to lay on it for a 10 minutes undisturbed because its something you're going to spend thousands of hours in what works for you might not necessarily work for someone else, it also depends how tall you are etc |

How much should I expect to spend? I didnt intend on spending over $1000. At the moment I'm sleeping like a baby on 2 pieces of foam.

yeah you dont need to go overboard, I only had to do it this way because I have epic back problems and due to my sheer size/weight
an average male (6 foot tall 80kgs~ roughly) wouldn't need anything special $1k would still be bottom of the barrel for a "good mattress" though, i'd still suggest you go check out makin mattresses (near the airport) even at super amart etc $1k probably wont even get you a kingsize |

Ive always loved waterbed mattresses.
COld in summer warm in winter. Not the best for sex nor are they good if you share your bed for sleeping. |

Only bad thing about the Latex mattresses is that the smell/fumes it gives off is pretty terrible. Had an allergic reaction to it and ended up sleeping on the old mattress on the lounge room floor for 8 weeks til I couldn't smell it anymore. By then the husband had left his imprint in it and I couldn't sleep properly for rolling into the middle all the time. So not the best purchase in the world from my experience. Had a similar reaction to one of those camping mattresses that you blow up - so Latex is obviously not for everyone.

sure it was latex and not memory foam? memory foam is petrolium based.
Latex is either made from natural rubber ( sap ) or artificial. I think the cheaper ones are artificial so might give bad smell etc. |

can someone tell me why people would get a queensize or kingsize over a regular double? I'm only an inch off six foot and i fit into a double just fine. I can understand with giants like teq would need bigger cos they're taller, but if you're six foot or under, why would you need/choose/want bigger than a regular double? I mean MrsHardware and I are fairly fit so a regular double is huge for us, really. |

Why wouldn't you want as much space as you can?
You can both cuddle or have your own sleeping space, you can fit kids in the bed for cuddles and you have so much room - you can roll over and not fall out of bed and you can flip the missus and not have her land on the floor ;) |

a regular double bed is tiny
it's more about the width than the length anyway, so your height is mostly beside the point |

Yep was definitely the Latex that caused the allergy according to the hospital.. Mattress cost us well over $1000 but it curbed the other problem - snoring. I got to sleep in a different room and actually get sleep at night without listening to a chainsaw |

thanks triamks. I had a queen for just myself - I'm 5'10, so it's more than big enough for me, but I can't stand sharing a double with someone else, I've done it before, and it just isn't enough room to sleep comfortably. |

Dial-a-bed have a warehouse in Underwood. They've got some pretty decent pillow top ensembles and stuff if you need another place to go try out.
Also, people who own LG Plasma or LCD TV's aren't aloud to (or really shouldn't) comment on other peoples TV's :D |

Latex mattresses are overrated
I bought one and I thought it was good at the time. In hindsight, I wish I'd gone with a really good innerspring. They tend to "imprint" very easily and need to be rotated regularly (once month at least). I'll be selling mine when the wench gets back from Greece an will be getting something else with her. |

3 or so years now i got a ~$1000~ king coil Innerspring mattress.
You will appreciate a good bed for many many years, i still do, i have the ability to sleep anywhere relatively comfortably, but its always nice coming home to a really nice comfy bed. After you have your tech toys its definitely the next best spend you will ever make. |

I ended up getting one of the premium range ones from Makin Mattresses. It was a softer mattress but I've got really broad shoulders and I found my arm usually goes dead when I sleep on other mattresses. Got a nice leather base from Amart for $600 and just ordered some pimpin linen online.

I scored a fairly decent mattress from Super Amart cheap as through a mate. It's a Wonderest of some description, with fancy springs and flip-free design etc. Top notch mattress, worth every penny. I think it was about $700 retail, wound up paying about $500 I think. A good mattress is a wise purchase. You'll appreciate it every day when you wake up and go to bed at night, and the bastards come with like 12 years warranty. $500 for something that will last me 10 years? Sounds like a bargain to me.
As for the size debate; I'm 6'5" and my feet juuust hit the bottom of my queen size bed. If I weren't a renter I would have probably gone for a KS, but finding rental properties with rooms big enough for a king size + desk etc can be a pain in the arse. If I could fit in a double, I would have bought one. Also, why do people like ensembles? I think they look s***ty and ghetto. I prefer a nice looking bed. The area under the bed can also double as storage space, so it's win/win. |

I prefer ensemble due to the small amount of room i have left in my room. No bed frame and all that..Bed frames give off an older look to me, makes it looked aged..

Some of them were ridiculously tight fits and left me with no room, but having the ensemble instead of a big frame made it do-able in more places than not I got an ensemble because when I bought my bed it was a year or so after I started getting my f*** during my teenage years and I had this stupidly squeaky bed frame that drove me nuts Also I don't think KS are any longer than QS, just wider. The thread count matters to an extent, but the quality of the material (i.e. the fact it's egyptian cotton) matters more. That being said, 1000 thread count egyptian cotton is awesome. Totally worth it. |

Does anyone have a King Size Quilt Cover Set on their Queen bed? The quilt cover set I want only seems to come in king size.
King Size - 240 x 210 cm Queen Size 210 x 210 cm I guess 15cm extra on each side wouldn't matter, it would just hang down? |

dynamite - the extra gap would be very annoying. Having a double cover on a single mattress is extremely annoying and it twists very easily.

Sorry to drag this up. We bought a King base yesty and need a mattress. Were there any further conclusions from your purchase? Also, committed this quote from greazy above to my head to drag back up at the right time later on in some other discussion:

Yea, I want in on this too - going to buy a queen base soon, and need a mattress to fit. Tbh, I was totally just going to get both from ikea because I can sleep on anything, but a few other suggestions wouldn't go wrong. Main need is cheap - below $800ish. Have found some online - is there anything dodgy about ordering online rather than buying from a store? |

Check out The Mattress Supermarket. Shopped around, and got a great deal at their Aspley store back in 2007.

We bought our base from Bedshed (dunno if you have that up there). Value was unbeatable. We looked at Forty Winks and Sleepy, etc, and beds were like $1600-2400 avg - then we went to Bedshed and found better for $760 :-/ Also, down here the bedding stores all have sales on until this Sunday. Might be same up there. |

Well, as an example of the deal I got from Mattress Supermarket: queen size mattress, bed frame, a pair of night stands, and a tallboy for $1950 delivered. Not cheap chipboard s*** either, even the drawers are solid wood.

I can't imagine there is much of a second hand mattress market? they did a mattress episode on dirty jobs recently, mike rowe was in the hizouse after 10 years a mattress weighs like an extra 20 pounds (9kgs) - mostly dead skin? 0:55 last edited by tequila at 23:36:38 11/Nov/09 |

What if I tell you it's always had a mattress protector on it and I have the video's to prove it? How much do you want for the vids? Or we can trade... Yeah, I thought the same, sparrow, when herms said above "I'll be selling mine..." LOL. Rank. And worse, who donates mattresses to op-shops. That s*** is criminal. teq, it's disgusting I know, but I reckon our mattress is AT LEAST 9kg heavier than when we bought it. I could lift it with one hand when I first put it on the bed. Now it takes two people!! It's about 8 years old. |

there is no way I'd buy a second hand mattress
it's kinda disgusting know about the dead skin and all that, just thinking back to how many hotels I've stayed in and hostels too (even worse no doubt). |

it's kinda disgusting know about the dead skin and all thatGet over it. You breath it in every day at work, at home, at the supermarket. Seriously, do you not put sheets over your mattress? |

pretty sure that was just a passing comment, so maybe you should get over it ^
I don't think anyone in their right mind would buy a second hand mattress my mrs wants to burn my mattress, I told her that her side sags because its the side that I used to do all my best work on ;) our next mattress is going to be custom built, an extra foot wider and longer than a kingsize only problem is getting the sheets and what not made up for it - but thats a once off every few years really |

That is a bold move getting a non-standard bed, even if you can afford to get the sheets made, it would still be a nuisance.

it might be a day out of my life but it would be worth it
my mrs is like 5'10 and I'm 6'8, so we occupy a fair bit of a king size already - my feet actually hang off the end I don't care if she just cuts a kingsize bed set in half both ways and then sews 1 foot of material in the center (like a Cross ) of each cut, making it longer and wider I could give two s***s what it looks like, so long as I'm comfy |
