Found out this morning that Windows 7 absolute earliest release date is December this year and that is with a lot of luck. Official release date is Q1 2010.

Removing all downgrade rights. Anyone who purchases Windows 7 note there will be no downgrade options, which users of Windows Vista could do legally, downgrade to XP.

Also some cool windows 7 features showed like wiggling your open window around minimizes all background programs etc.

comment.

Is Windows 7 actually going to have anything original? Or does it consist of microsofty mac osx and compiz effects?

Nah, he means wiggle the foreground window will make the background ones minimise I think :)

They'd probably have done that with mac years ago but you can't tie up all one mouse button :D

That wiggle and minimise thing is working on my 7 desktop right now!

That's a lot easier than a clucterf*** of button combos. Just wish I could do the dock the window to a half screen thing along the seam between my monitors now :)

what is it with having just one button on those things?

plugging a normal mouse in to a Mac and right-clicking gets options the same as the Windows GUI does.. why ditch that? It's bloody annoying not having the option on a Mac mouse. Does the '2 button mac mouse' cost another optional $400 or something?

/end rant.

it comes with a VM and a legit copy of WinXP Pro SP3 built in on most versions. Why would you need to backdate (other than needing a serial dongle to run a program) ?

I can apreciate that people were sketchy on the idea of running MS VM on a Vista machine so you had an old version of XP to run certain tasks, but computers have more power and memory now. Why the hell wouldn't you?

The wiggly thing is a bit homo, but I like the snap to things it has when you drag a window to the left, right and top parts of the screen.

Windows 7 rocks, I converted my HTPC over to it when the RC hit. Its been running all month rock solid. The new media centre interface is very nice, got channel logos in the guide, media browser running all my TV show and movies. Admittedly this is what Vista should have been but I'm not complaining, bring on the RTM.

By the sounds of it, we won't need to downgrade from Windows 7, unlike vista.

For us we will be doing a full hardware refresh in about 18 months when our current hardware is out of warranty.. if I don't win my business case for changing to Macbooks then we'll get Win7 then.

Most businesses will probably follow the same time to change as WinXP will be end of support soon and most of the people that decide these things will know Vista doesn't present any real reasons to use once Win7 is out.

And Windows XP was win 2000 mark two - they also shared a common base kernel and stuff like drivers etc worked between them.

Actually they are mostly paired to 2 releases per kernel.

3.0
3.11
(Graphics over DOS)

win95
win98
win32 kernel that is s***HOUSE and falls down a lot. Somehow defeats Apple anyway.

(various seperate NT server releases up to here)

Win2000
WinXP
Integration of NT kernel into client OS THANK GOD.

Vista
7
Long overdue changes to security and HAL to seperate administrative and user rights. Heaps of s*** breaks because dumbs*** developers did stupid things like writing at runtime to HKLM without checking for permissions. People are upset. Microsoft takes this one on the chin and business is stuck with XP SOEs.

Windows7 rides in with a shiny facelift, bunch of services everyone hated turned off and cashes in on the 2 years of hardware work bringing Vista drivers up to speed. Hailed as the second Jebus by Windows users.

Probably not a problem for home users but big problem for IT nerds. My work is all XP as their has been no compelling reason to upgrade to Vista that outweighs the negatives....but that's not a problem....just buy computers with Vista then put on XP SOE. From my understanding this new licensing restriction will mean if you buy a new PC with Windows 7 you must run Windows 7. Changing OS in a business with lots of computers and old weird expensive software can be a MAJOR PITA. Even mainstream apps like Office etc...can be a pain to change OS if they are customised to suit a corporate network environment.

Question for other IT nerds: are XP licenses still available and if so for how long? I just get Vista licenses atm and downgrade to XP....surely they are not going to force new PCs to be either Win7 or Vista....for a long time yet? either way this is a f*** in the ass. If you can buy XP licenses still then that's great but what about when we decide the time is right to move to Win7? Then we have to buy new licenses.

I think this is the first bad news I have heard about Win7...and it is seriously bad news for nerds :(

Coochie - any IT 'nerd' (I presume you mean someone responsible for the management of a companys IT infrastructure) will know that you need to update your OS every few years and if they don't upgrade from XP to Win7 then they are left with a legacy OS with no security updates being worked on leaving a massive business risk on the desks of all their employees.

MS need to cut the strings at some time in the life cycle of a product as it would become unprofitable to continue supporting older products when the new products are available to use.

The question is, how easy will MS make the upgrade path from XP -> Win7 and so far from what I've seen, there is no option to upgrade.

So I guess by that reasoning, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Mortal Kombat vs DC and Mirror's Edge are all pretty much the same game, nothing new or different between any of those. I mean, they use all the same engine (Unreal Engine 3), with only some minor changes, so they must all be the same and offer the same experience as one another right?

Windows 7 looks decent. when I get a bigger hdd in this comp I'll definitely dual-boot it.

this years osx release looks to be pretty boring. except for OpenCL.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/snowleopard/
With Snow Leopard, the next major version of the world’s most advanced operating system, Mac OS X changes more than its spots, it changes focus. Taking a break from adding new features, Snow Leopard — scheduled to ship in about a year — builds on Leopard’s enormous innovations by delivering a new generation of core software technologies that will streamline Mac OS X, enhance its performance, and set new standards for quality. Snow Leopard dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos.

and that's how you market a boring OS release.

Not for purchase directly. Only (big) OEM still sell this, i.e. Dell. I recently just purchased a Dell Vostro notebook with XP SP3 installed ("downgrade" from Vista Business LOL).

They won't keep this up for long though...

anyone ever noticed how all windows releases (from win95 onwards) are based on the year they were? and how originally like windows 3.1 was based on the 'version' or core or whatever its called... and yet, after switching to naming windows based on the year... the ONE freaking time they go back to naming it the 'next version' of the 'core' just so happens to be 7 when its freakin 6.1.

s'like they are saying...

Ubuntu is okay, but it wont replace windows for a lot of users.
Go read the ubuntu forums, even THEY are saying that windows 7 is f***ing good.
I feel confident that when the team went from 8.10 to 9.04 they didnt rebuild the OS from scratch so what the f*** is your point about windows 7?

all that the photo shows is that he has waaaaay too much time on his hands to order a cd to make a f***ing coaster to take a f***ing photo that isnt even f***ing funny!!!

There's nothing funnier then developers endlessly preaching about their pro open source bulls*** operating systems, expressing their "rebellion" by putting an ubuntu mug on a windows cd is a fine example.

The reality is they are douche bags, the rest of the world and big business aren't going to waste time with these operating systems, they're going to use windows.

So unfortunately guys like that are always going to be douche bags.

I've been running Windows 7 for a while now and its sweet as pie.
