Topic: NRL Cheerleaders to go?

Sigh. Do a google search on it, this s*** has been springing up everywhere, especially following the Johns debacle.
Two years ago South Sydney axed cheerleaders and replaced them with drummers. Co-owner Russell Crowe said at the time: "Our focus is to re-establish rugby league and women. The focus on game day should be a positive experience for the crowd. We feel the [cheerleaders] made a lot of people uncomfortable ... We felt we didn't need cheerleaders and would like them replaced by a group of drummers, male and female."

Souths CEO Shane Richardson said cheerleaders were axed because "it wasn't the way we wanted women to be viewed. We just didn't think it was in the best interests of the way we wanted the game portrayed".

Sorry girls, but I'm getting a bit f***ing sick of about changing 'attitudes towards women', it s***s me to tears. We don't bitch about manpower, eligible bachelor contests etc, so leave our s*** alone ffs. What's inherently wrong with sexy women that we need to 'change' things?!

I'm not fussed by the change. Why cheerleaders have to wear skimpy outfits in the dead of winter is beyond me.

And no, I'm not a raging homosexual - I just think parading woman around in tiny outfits is not a requirement to appreciating them.

at first you might think these seats are s***, but i'm on the side of the ground that israel falou attacks when the bronco's are attacking this end. nothing beats seeing tha bomb come across field and seeing the big guy go in or when they spread it wide through locky, hunt, hodges and falou.

hahahaha ticman, yeah she's a f***ing mong hey her face is f***ing weird like a downy or something. i'll try and get some better ones next time

speaking of the big guy mission, we had dinner in this members only area with a buffet food was pretty s***.

but hodgo did come up and do an interview and said he wasn't playing, if he played tonight risked being out for like 6 weeks so i was safer not to play.

I couldn't give a toss what they do with cheerleaders at the NRL, even though it is a ridiculously American tradition. But FFS, get rid of those pathetic 'XXXX Angels' at the V8 Supercars events.

The NRL wants to appeal to the 51% of people who dont find girls in skimpy clothes appealing ?

i wonder what the cheerleaders feel about this, as obviously they do it for a reason in the first place ~ talking about the cheerleaders but thinking about everyone else - WHAT ABOUT THE CHEERLEADERS!? (they have feelings too)

I wouldn't feel the slightly bit put out if the cheerleaders were to go. Why do they even wear f***ing pink anyway?!? Seriously, get with the program, our colours at maroon.
But yeah, does anyone notice them anyway? Would hardly be a loss. Cept the cheerleaders would probably be pretty pissed they were out of an easy job.

Apparently it goes back to the 60s in NRL. 50 years is a kind of long time for us to do something and it to be a foreign tradition.

I get the argument that the NRL wants to broaden its scope to more chicks. But I don't really want NRL to be homogenised into something that is bland enough to appeal to the widest possible spectrum. Football, especially NRL football, has always been an unrepentently blokey sport, and I appreciate it for that.

I guess the slow process of hammering that out is 'progress'. Yay.

I wouldn't feel the slightly bit put out if the cheerleaders were to go

To be honest I probably wouldn't even notice if they disappeared. It just s***s me that people having a whinge about attitudes can cause these sorts of changes.

I go to the football to watch footy, not watch some fat trogs whos faces resemble a bucket of smashed crabs.

i guess if the nrl is serious about changing its attitude to women, they will have to go:

tis a shame, coz i had a great time ogling the fatties cheering for the broncos the other week;

considering it was the manly game, it was the highlight of the arvo

The only thing to do the game justice is to actually get rid of the game itself.

The solution maybe?

"The NRL needs to set up a brothel liaison office and to conduct brothel information sessions with all players, including those who profess to be religious,'' party convenor with the Australian Sex Party, Fiona Patten, said.

May as well ban cheerleaders...glasses...public events....could even save a lot of time wasted on creating legislation by just banning anything to do with fun all together.

It seems like if something does not appeal to the lowest common denominator (christian feminist old people) then politicians are too scared to not ban it. I have no idea how brothels were legalised in the not too distant past.

I've never found cheerleaders attractive, and it does seem a bit uncomfortable, because cheerleaders aren't really a natural thing, it seems so fake and american and awkward, I'd much rather see some drummers and cartwheeling ninjas.

OK my comment was obviously sarcastic...but not sure about yours. You don't seriously think there should be women playing on the NRL teams do you?

Being a drummer, I'd prolly be watching them smash out some cool s*** and not actually watch the game lol.

Nobody has banned anything. A privately run company has simply chosen to run their business in a way that they think will earn them more money.

This doesnt bother me any more than all the companies using scantily clad women to try and earn more money. As long is its a organisation's choice and not government regulation, then I dont see the problem.

Don't be sexist. Girls can do anything.

Next you'll be saying that black men shouldn't be playing on the NRL teams.

I dont see a problem with chicks playing nrl, the thing is, it would be highly unlikely that a chick would ever be good enough. Im not being sexist, im being realistic, they aren't built for it. The most you would have would be maybe 1 or 2 women every few years that would even get a run, and they would never make it to the really elite level like state of origin or Australian level, so why would a team ever want them.

Once again im not being sexist, but im pretty sure that F1 doesn't stop women driving F1 cars, but who was the last women F1 driver or champion?, thats right, never, its the same thing, different quality's obviously needed for F1 and league, but you get what I mean.

Also womens cricket? why dont they just let the women play with the men?, its not a physical game and they might actually have a chance to get to the elite level.

Women playing League, You really aren't serious are you?

That is a valid point that it is a private company that is doing it to make more money by trying to appeal to more people. However I guess it is just society in general is turning into a bunch of god damned pussies and crying out for governments and private organisations to ban fun s***.

So let lesbians play footy and we can keep the cheerleaders.

Win/win.

Looks like Viper answered for me.

I don't have a problem with girls overall...there is many things they can do better than men...but there is also many things they can't do as well as men. eg. playing the majority of sports.

They simply could not compete with men in rugby league...if you think they could you have either never seen a game of league or never met a woman.

If you do find a woman that can compete in A grade rugby league then I think by all means let her play.

im pretty sure that if a man only gym opened up (like fernwood or whatever its called) women would be fuming and complaining just at the fact that there was a man only gym and they want their equal rights.

Like the Tatts Club and all those other man-only clubs that are around. It's OK for women to have their own little fitness gyms but a man can't have his man only cigar smoking club. Equality my ass.

Haha Cheerleading, just as anything, was pioneered by men:

Princeton graduate Thomas Peebles introduced the idea of organized crowds cheering at football games to the University of Minnesota. However, it was not until 1898 that University of Minnesota student Johnny Campbell directed a crowd in cheering "Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-u-mar, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!”, making Campbell the very first cheerleader and November 2, 1898 the official birth date of organized cheerleading. Soon after, the University of Minnesota organized a "yell leader" squad of 6 male students, who still use Campbell's original cheer today[4] In 1903 the first cheerleading fraternity, Gamma Sigma was founded.[5] Cheerleading started out as an all-male activity, but females began participating in 1923, due to limited availability of female collegiate sports. At this time, gymnastics, tumbling, and megaphones were incorporated into popular cheers, and are still used today.[5] Today it is estimated that 97% of cheerleading participants overall are female, but males still make up 50% of cheering squads at the collegiate level.

Yeah that's right I did my research.

As an aeroplane was about to crash a woman stands up and takes off all her clothes and shouts out: If I'm going to die I want to die feeling like a woman, is anyone here man enough to make me feel like a woman?

A man stands up and takes off his shirt and says: Here, iron this.
