I've never used this stuff before so I don't really know what's involved, but I just want a basic wiki for some documentation, text, images, interlinking articles. The main feature which is a must though is password access, I don't want any old bum stumbling across these pages from google.

Confluence is on a cheap promo at the moment with $5 for 5 users.

If it's just for personal use, check out http://www.tiddlywiki.com/ . I use this for personal stuff. It's not web-accessible (or I think it is but it's a bit of dicking around) but I find it really useful as sort of a portable notepad thing.

That is REALLY f***ing cool. AAA+++, great seller, would buy from again. *eBay joke*

Tiddlywiki, and you should just pay the AUD8 for Confluence while you have the chance, even if you decide not to use it. Seriously, <$10... you may as well.

Unfortunately Tiddly I don't think does the passwording etc you want. But it's great as a personal wiki.

We're using DocuWiki at work for some documentation sort of stuff. We have it hooked up to the local LDAP server for authentication and access lists, there are other auth methods though so it should work for you. As a wiki it works well for me - it's pretty unstructured and kind of.. technical looking. but it's the first wiki I've really used and gone to town with. It works without a database.

http://datamapper.org (just an example DocuWiki; how I discovered it)
