I'm gonna upgrade my machine tomorrow and I wanna to chuck in a 120gig SSD for my main drive.

I know they're pricey but apart from that would it be worth getting? Are they faster when it comes to loading games and booting up compared to standard HDD's? If there's a nice increase in speed I'd like to give them a try.

Also wanna get an i7 chip as well. The 920 is clocked at 2.66 and the 940 at 2.93. Is there much difference speed wise between the two and are they worth it. Only be using the system for games.

Thanx

They probably are faster but will you notice? Probably not. Same goes for the chip.

Do some more reading first before jumping into SSD, some have stuttering issues and other things but on the whole they are pretty quick.

If you're after performance, why not go for Ultra320-SCSI over a SATA SSD?

Okies. Well I might just get a 300gig raptor drive if it's not worth forking out the extra. Only wanted to get one if the speed was really noticeable.

So what about the CPU? I wont be upgrading again for quite some time after this so will the i7 chip be worth grabbing?

The speed is really noticeable, but alot of the SSD's out aren't that great. The best are the Intel ones (not sure if they're even out yet) and the followup recommendation is the OCZ Vertex series. Google for more info, but that's what I remember seeing in some in-depth test recently.

It is in some areas, but they do have their flaws.

Also wanna get an i7 chip as well.
New ones are coming out shortly too. The i7 920 is a great overclocker too.

OK, after looking around the net for write ups of the SSD I'm gonna bite the bullet and grab one. You only live once, LOL

So this is what I plan on getting...

Intel S1366 Core i7 920 2.66GHz Quad Core CPU
ASUS ATI 4870X2 2GB PCIe Video Card

Antec Signature 850W Power Supply
Antec Twelve Hundred Black Case
Pioneer BDC-S02BK Blu-Ray Reader/DVD Writer Combo

I wouldn't bother with a 940 either. Yeah it's going to be faster margainally, but the 920 is already so quick it's like "who cares"! :D

Awesome link eXemplar. I've been digging around for some SSD information and that AnandTech article is gold.

Time to open up a PC shop that sells only to Rev & TK .. you'd make a fortune!
