Crazy article up on ninemsn,

Some poor Russian thought he had a tumour growing inside his lung and when they operated on it, it was a f***ing Fir tree!!
I think it is a result of Chernobyl

Surgeons in Russia were astounded to find what they say is a 5cm fir tree growing inside a man's lung.

Artyom Sidorkin, 28, visited doctors in the central city of Izhevsk complaining of intense chest pain and said he had been coughing up blood.

After consulting X-rays, doctors were "100 percent sure" Mr Sidorkin had a tumour and decided on surgery to remove the cancer.

But when they opened him up, surgeons instead found a small fir tree growing inside his lung.

"I thought I was hallucinating," said surgeon Vladimir Kamashev.

The Sun's headline for this: "Tree patient had fir-ight of his life" (found when I googled to see if this was a 1st April story, but it's been picked up by all sorts of places in the last ~24 hours)

hmm, how was photosynthesis possible?

sure a seed can germinate in darkness but that uses the limited supply of energy packaged within it, after that it needs light.

Take a leaf out of his book, don't swallow (or inhale) your seeds.

looking like they will have to BRANCH out into SPLINTER factions of the ARBOR-TREE medical FIELDS.

when questioned, the man said he is just STICKING up for himself and by HEDGING his bets and he felt he WOODnT be CUT out of the decision making. He was KNOT going to MILL over the PAPER work any longer so no use BARKING about it any further.

If a tree fell in your lung and nobody saw it, would it still make you cough?

A plant can grow a surprising amount without sun light. Also photosynthesis uses sunlight to eventually remove the Carbons from CO2 to make sugars. A plant can grow without photosynthesis as long as it is supplied with the sugars it needs.

Providing this story is true, perhaps the plant and person had the right combination of enzymes to allow the sugars to be converted and used just enough to grow.

Eww.

You seem to know a bit about growing plants in total darkness there toll. Should we be curious as to what's in your basement? :p

This was in the lung. The seed must have been tiny to get into his lungs and on top of that needed the energy to grow to 5 cm with tiny branches. No way this is real. That doesn't even look like a lung.

5cm isn't that big, and all plants really need are a source of energy (e.g sugar), a nitrogen source and a bunch of ions - all of which could be found in the blood (which there is plenty of in the lungs).

Not saying I believe the story, but it is possible

There is blood in the lungs? I don't think so...

edit: after 2 seconds of googling it seems there are blood capillaries in your lungs but I doubt a plant would be able to again access to that surely

A germinated seed in 24hr darkness will be taller than that germinated in ~13h of daylight or whatever we are having at the moment. Our skin and tissues also have transparent qualities.

Red blood cells are oxygenated blood which is what our lungs are for.

I know there are blood vessels in the lungs but there isn't just blood floating around in there.
