I have 2*1 gig sticks of giel (at 1066?) ram and mate comp has 1 gig stick 800mhz and he loads maps in cod4 3 times quicker. I'm sure my comp used to beat his but im not sure. Both are amdX26000+ i have 320gb hdd and he has 80gb hdd. Am i missing something... im sure i loaded s*** load faster previously.

He probably has it on a lower graphics setting? Smaller textures, shader data, mesh data, etc = faster load.

Also, have you defragged your hard-drive lately? How much bloat do you have installed on windows?

Does this really make a difference in loading times in games?

I'd like to think that someone who has 1GB memory on an AMD 2600+ probably doesn't have a proper RAID setup nor defrags much (if at all), since they don't seem to be concerned with performance with such an old system :)

yes, though it depends on the game, and your surrounding hardware.

at the end it all comes down to how efficient you know your machine can run, and whether you yourself see the costs involved with making that happen to be worthwhile.

not everyone wants a turbo to make their car more powerful. especially when they're mostly just sitting in traffic to and from work each day.
