LOL, an uproar at QUT, no surprise there. I never really appreciated UQ until I went to QUT.
This semester for one of my subjects, the subject co-ordianator (who gave approximately 10 out of the 13 lectures), didn't attend 4 of them. She was sick or busy/out of town (as per the emails she sent us). She did of course *eventually* put up the lecture notes and recordings on Blackboard though not until one week before the exams... In addition to this, there was zero moderation of assignments. I mean, students colloded in the computer labs on assignments, and one student would get a 2 and another a 4. Seriously. One tut group got their assignments back a week earlier than everyone else (not really a big deal) but he told them he would give them all 6's and 7's and he did just because. Different tutors told us different things. Several students failed one out of the three components of the assignment because they were 16 words over word count (after the +10%), when the subject co-ordinator said it was ok. I should also add at this point that this was a roughtly a 20 page assignment (double spacing) and that most students received no feedback, let alone anything that was constructive (note: comments on forgetting a full stop in your references don't count as constructive criticism of an assignment). In addition to this, in the final lecture, she gave us the exam. Yes. THE EXAM. There were 20 multi choice q's (she only provided the stem of the question and not the options before the exam...though you could very easily read around the questions) and she gave us 4 short answer q's directly from our tuts. Whilst pretty much no-one attended tuts due to the fact that they only occured once a fortnight and the tutors had no idea what they were doing, let alone we hadn't been given the lecture or lecture notes beforehand to understand the tuts, this was just so wrong. I'm pretty sure the co-ordinator is clinically retarded. I complained to the head of teaching and learning, explaining that not a lot of either was going on and gave her a copy of the exam before the exam. I got a lot of empathy, but not much else. Someone else complained a little further up and was told to do some work and stop complaining. Subsequently, I have been told that she was a new subject co-ordinator and she ran the course last year and had to change it - which she did. But she still gave us the same exam as last years cohort - the majority of the questions of which were on topics we hadn't studied in this subject. I attended every lecture and tut and read my notes carefully. The biggest lol in the whole situation though was when she tried to have a go at students saying that she didn't want students to graduate with no idea what we were doing given that graduate salaries begin at 55k/year (base pay rate) and that learning was really up to us. This coming from the woman who was being paid to teach us yet taught us nothing. I still have no idea what I was supposed to take from this subject. I got a 6 for this subject. last edited by Agent 99 at 19:48:17 29/Nov/08 |

In the end you still get the piece of paper at the end don't you? Unless you're doing engineering or something similar, no one is going to care what your marks were, just that you have the piece of paper.
I only hired someone once (and only once) based on their uni results, and was easily the biggest hiring mistake of my career. The guy was a moron. Now I hire people on completely different criteria, and things have worked out considerably better. This isn't to say striving for good marks is a bad thing, but I think it's more about having a passion or an interest in what you're studying at the very least... My 2c |

so you got 4s in first year (first semester?).
it gets harder you realise. isn't enb102 the subject where you build a bridge from spaghetti? you got a 4 for that? |

The only people who use this defense are retards who feel the need to validate their shifty marks I honestly don see the point in aiming for high marks if you're not a) looking to study further, or b) actually interested in the material you're studying. Ftr, yes I get good marks (going on for phd), but for people who just need the piece of paper I don't see the point in wasting time on Uni assignments that are rarely valid. |

nf, i don't do well at structural type s*** like 102, so i'm happy just to get through it and i only have 1 more struc subject
201 which is fluid mechanics is said to be one of the hardest subjects, i did quite well at right up until they screwed us on the exam. 102 is no walk in the park regardless i think 101 is the subject where you build a bridge from balsa wood, but i have credit for that s*** from tafe and technically isn't not my first semester of first year, i have like 2 odd years or so of credit from tafe last edited by paveway at 10:50:56 30/Nov/08 |

Spewing I missed the 7 by 3%. The trick to getting high grades at Uni isn't studying your arse off, that is like getting high grades through brute force. The trick is knowing what is going to be on the exam and how the markers mark. Edit Also, with those results I have finished my Degree. Fear my Biochemistry! |

I dunno about other degrees but in what I have been doing, chem major with some biol, the difference in understanding of course material is amazingly huge between pass and a decent grade. Its like a 4 you know a couple factoids and a 7 you still only know like 80% of the subject.
It honestly shocks me that a 4 can be a pass :/ |

It depends on the subject really. There are some that I have gotten 6's for really easily, and some where I have worked my ass off and gotten a 4 or a 5.

Yeah i mean it varies from subject to subject but in a lot of subjects it seems you can barely have a clue what you are doing and pass. |

^ I couldn't agree more; if you're only getting a 4 you're either not putting the work in (for whatever reason that may be), not interested, or in the wrong degree (i.e. you're not doing what you're good at). Generally I think a 4 usually indicates that you crammed and don't really UNDERSTAND the content.
A grade of 4 for me is only acceptable in the context that a person won't really use the subject/doesn't really need it. There are definitely some subjects out there that are ONLY necessary if you want to do research. last edited by Agent 99 at 16:36:05 30/Nov/08 |

a 4 is mathematically the optimal score to achieve. it's a pass with minimum effort therefore you are studying most efficiently and can focus on other normal human activities, like drinking and having sex with people of the opposite sex.
all the extra effort to score a higher pass has not advanced your studies and in turn you have also drunk less and had less sex. think about it... last edited by infi at 16:58:06 30/Nov/08 |

It's really not that difficult to find a few hours a week to do some decent study. Well worth it to have a clue when it comes to your job.
Also, a 4 isn't always the "mathematically optimal" grade to achieve. In some subjects (generally mathematical/mechanical type subjects), it could require less time and effort to actually sit down and understand what you are doing properly and end up with a 5 or 6, rather than try to scrape by with the bare minimum by cramming in swotvac. last edited by Alt_F4 at 17:05:16 30/Nov/08 |

i agree with qmass, 4s are too easy to get and often don't reflect a sound understanding of a subject, especially in first year subjects with multiple choice exams (if you fail a subject with a multichoice exam you are f***ing retarded and should kill yourself)
the final marks don't reflect it, but my grasp of the scb120 and 121 material was actually pretty decent (came back from s***ty midsemester marks and missing some pracs) but i can honestly say that my understanding of the other two wasn't worthy of a pass. i cant really complain though, they are still credits towards a degree and in the future i probably won't have to actually use anything i learned in those subjects anyway. still, it hurts the GPA and just scraping by isn't something i want to make a habit of last edited by Jum at 20:58:00 30/Nov/08 |

I found that the best strategy to getting good marks and/or simply passing is to SMASH the mid-semesters. Generally you only need to know 5-7 lectures, between getting 100% prac marks or close to it (and really, there is little reason not to) and getting 80%+ for mid semester plus whatever other assessment you may have you quite often walk into the final exam with 30-50% of the final mark of Uni under your hat.
Nothing is better at Uni then knowing you only need to spell your name right on the final exam to pass.... |

I think studying and working are very different, and some people have trouble making the transition from studying hard to working effectively. |

i'd rather be at work than at uniAnd these are the people that will essentially do what's required to get their degree, and then actually be interested in the work they'll do when they start doing it. That's not always true, some people (like Pave) are just a waste of space :P |

Hmm, maybe things are different at QUT, or the times have changed, but at USYD a computer science pass really meant that you knew the material OK. USYD was really f***ing harsh, they would quite happily fail the s*** out of you without remorse! There was very little opportunity to pass subjects without putting in at least a few hours effrot each week.
I know the difference when I started tutoring at JCU up here was amazing. I was told to help people who showed up at tutes and labs in week 7 who hadn't been to anything so far, and push and assist them to get through the course. |

It's not real good for uni's when students fail as it:
a) takes up further resources to pass them - increase costs b) reduces the intake of new students - decrease income of commencing students (who go on to become continuing) c) increases the changes of students not continuing with their study - decrease in income from continuing students All this is bad news for the uni. But on the flip side they can't just pass anyone so they get a degree as it erodes the reputation of the uni. |

If you don't when your results are coming out ... you don't care And if you do post a thread feigning lack of knowledge then its pretty safe you are looking to show cool your results are. Also typo always posts in them |

You're never going to get a good job with grades like that.

If you have successfully passed a university degree it is seen as a fairly decent accomplishment and shows you have commitment and the ability to stick at something for an extended period of time.
No one cares what GPA you have. Most employers are more concerned with what experience/skills you have. Like most people have said its pretty easy to pass a degree, you don't REALLY start learning s*** till you actually start working in that field. Passing a degree will stop your CV from being filed in the bin, personally I have never had any queries about the GPA. On the very rarest of occasions it might help clinch a job if it was super tight between applicants... maybe... probably more likely to go on first impressions of personality imo. I graduated on a 5 FYI It is only gonna matter if you are a super academic who wants to do post grad studies. |

It's not real good for uni's when students fail as it: I guess that matters if the University is competing for places. Sydney Uni - at least a few years ago when I was going there - was quite competitive to gain entry. Its a bit (lot?) of a wank but the 'sandstone' universities in AU get to pick and choose students, and tend to lean much more heavily towards defending the quality standards of graduates. |

paveway, be more defensive of your s*** gpa
In engineering, those with poor gpas, in general, are far worse engineers than those with strong gpas. Team project at UQ is the biggest proof of this. In my field there is no way I could survive without a super strong knowledge base, and you just don't get that when you're just getting passes. But s***, I gotta say, it's not that hard to get good marks. Work smart, not hard, and you can easily pull 6s and 7s. I'm on track for first class honours but its not like I've had a s*** time at uni. I've studied abroad twice (facilitated by my marks) and done a research stint in the states (allowing me to skip the aussie winter and windsurf through the states' summer). If you are doing a degree where you're just getting 4s and doing the bare minimum, then why the f*** are you spending $20k+ just for a piece of paper?! You sure as hell aren't gonna get much more from it. |

Matt, that piece of paper is worth every penny whether you have your strong knowledge base or not! the jump from drafty to engineer has gotta be close to 20k straight up in 1 year.

What? Every post you have made in this thread harps on about how you only need 4s and anyone else who does better is a nerd who isn't living life. Guess what, people can get a high gpa AND live life. Don't get pissy because you can't.
Attacking high gpa achievers == defending your s*** gpa |

the people living in the clouds with their 7's Haha, still going on with your mindless grade-bashing? Just accept the fact that you never managed to work out the right balance between study and play. Matt for example has: all I hear about is his traveling, windsurfing, getting drunk, etc .. yet he still manages to pump out grades that keeps giving him better opportunities/offers to work/study abroad and the cycle repeats. I'm jealous of how much time he spends overseas! Is that nerdy? Far from it, considering how much he's experiencing in life in the process. More like having a goal and putting in the effort to achieve it. Pure and simple. Your loss if you have difficulty grasping this concept. i do the bare minimum Great approach to life right there. |

It's better to aim for the stars and hit a tree, than it is to aim at a tree, and hit paveway's forehead.

Must suck to only achieve 4's with bare minimum. You do know that a fair few of those 5's and 6's you see are also bare minimum. |

Yeah, I hate it when stuff like that happens.
Like I would of had a GPA of 7 if I didn't keep turning up drunk. |
