Well that's kind of the point. He has converted to Islam and has taken on a new name to coincide with his new faith. Like Cat Stevens changed his name to Yusef Islam. It's a way of casting off the old you and embracing your new faith/identity, and seems to be popular within Islamic religion. You've heard of Cassius Clay?
