Apple has just released the next version of the firmware, version 2.2 which has pretty much the features that we'd expected plus a few little extras.

  • Enhancements to Maps

    • Google Street View*

    • Public transit and walking directions

    • Display address of dropped pins

    • Share location via email

  • Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls

  • Enhancements to Mail

    • Resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email

    • Improved formatting of wide HTML email

  • Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)

  • Improved stability and performance of Safari

  • Improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages

  • Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen

  • Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings

Grab it from iTunes. Not sure if you need to update to iTunes 8.0.2 though.

The home screen shortcut sounds handy by the way.

Just finished installing. My developer certificates and apps are still running so thats cool. Safari seems heaps smoother now.

Street view is pretty sweet and really smooth (with the downloading part too).

I am in no rush, can anyone with jailbroken phone confirm all is ok?

Dunno about jailbreak status but I can confirm that the entire UI animation seems a LOT smoother. Even my own app animates views smoother.

i thought Streetview is pretty cool too - though for s***s and giggles i thought the Android implementation of Streetview was very cool.

What it really needs is to auto-follow GPS navigation so you don't manually have to flick through the steps:/

jailbreak is usually a week or two after a release

hit the 'current location' button on the map screen (bottom left), it will follow you and continue to update your position
it will also stop the screen from going into screen saver

That's the most generic release notes I've ever seen.

oh right, you mean the text steps?

I don't really use them, I just watch the map and use it mostly as a guide
I'll try the text steps next time

FYI
2.2 has been jailbroken already. Linky

I've done my phone and all is well. Make sure you do a backup first then upgrade to 2.2 via itunes before using quickpwn to jail break. You'll want a local copy of the new 2.2 firmware for quickpwn to point at.
