One shaken witness, known only as Millie, said the lunch had been for mothers of Year 12 students at Brisbane Anglican Church Grammar School.

No, it should be engineered and built to hold as many people as can phyisically stand on the deck, toe to toe.

At least that's what Cam (I think it's Cam - the celebrity builder guy from Backyard blitz) said this morning on TV.

It said the house is owned by an accountant - why don't I have a house like that?

kat, they would have or were going to celebrate with their sons. But they have all known each other for probably sometime and have seen each boy grow up in their own way and have made strong friendships with one another...

Their son's were to graduate/finish school today. Therefore their sons were at school.

And call me sceptical but I don't believe for one second they were there because they have made strong bonds with one another. They were there because that's what rich snooty mothers of private school boys do.

It's a shame that it happened and I feel for the families of those effected. It's a horrible thing to happen. I just find the reason they were all there a little superficial and a bit too much like mother's living their lives through their sons for me (which is what most rich mothers do)

She's right though. It is a very peculiar situation even without the collapse.

Many were wearing fashionable summer dresses. One woman, who wore a black and white floral dress for the occasion, left with dried blood smeared up her left ankle.
Another woman, with short blonde hair and a sleeveless white dress, walked straight to a sporty black Mercedes.

Are you reading this? What the f***! It's like they're talking about Lady Diana...

So Kat, the parents play no part in getting there kid to 17 and graduating high school. Amazing I didn't know kids provided, cared and supervised themselves between 0 and 17. Oh and paid for their own schooling.

I know I'd be celebrating when my kids finish High School. Apart from the cost of their education is now less (I'll be buggered if I pay for uni) the fact they are now educated, semi-independant adults capable of earning a living and furthering themselves in life and I as a parent aided in this achievement would certainly make me feel proud enough to celebrate.

A landmark in their lives and yours as parents, I'd say.

She's right though.
Right my arse.

Some of Brisbane's most wealthy families send their sons to Churchie. My question is if these ppl have copius amounts of disposable cash why on earth did they not pay to have a decent deck built?
mission
Posts: 4330

I don't think you can assume they said 'Build us a cheap one' or building a cheap one should not affect the strength of the structure.

There are Australian Standards in building and there is no way around building something that doesn't meet those specifications, unless you get a dodgy builder, even then I suspect council would inspect after completion.

If the deck was there for a while there may have been unknown damage, such as termite or rot, significantly weakening the structure.

Mothers even at exclusive private schools do lots of work behind the scenes, infact I'd say they do more at that sort of school then at most state schools.

These mums will have done fund raisers, organised events, (wo)maned tuckshops, sold raffle tickets, attended a variety of (boring) events to support their children. And alot of them they may never interact with these other mothers again. Think of it as a breakup party for a bunch of volunteers.

why on earth did they not pay to have a decent deck built?

Maybe they did pay for a decent deck, and maybe that deck wasn't built to spec ?
This is why there a forensic department in the police and not a qgl idle speculators department.

Some of Brisbane's most wealthy families

No doubt there are a heap of very much middle class ones that saved for years to send their kid there too.

like i say, it looks to me like a renovated home from the 1920s. Who knows what kind of crap was going on with the structure of the deck, possibly the structure hadn't been touched since the '20s, only replaced floorboards and rails etc.

Obes speaks the truth

And just remember, you don't stay rich by giving all your money away. A lot of very rich people are very frugal, sometimes stupidly so. Who knows.

To back my earlier statement up.

Based on my experience in working at schools.

A rowing skull costs around 45grand each (btw I am pretty sure its more then that actually).

The schools do not pay for these. They are fundraised.
Thats pie drives, mango drives, cocktail nights, fundraising auctions, guest dinners, raffles.... and a s*** load of them. And remember that's 1 boat for 1 sport.

Are there rich snotty brats ? yup and rich snotty parents that will cry poor to avoid fees while driving their masserati ? yes

Are there kids who parents are working 3 jobs to keep their kid here ? for sure

The first 15 rugby team doing a tour of England ... SNOBS! ... no ... the kids and parents fund raised it all.

There are Parents who are earning a million a year who will be standing beside the guy earning 75grand a year cooking the same snags for the same event. Will those 2 ever meet outside of the college ? highly doubtful. And you want to begrudge these people a farewell get together.

Kat you need to stop the jealousy or whatever messed up thought process you have going.
Most of these schools have a Ladies auxillary or Mother's support group. (As do many/most state schools)

Why ? cos the men are too busy/lazy to help most of then time. Even thats not true. They tend to help with specific groups or events. eg. the rowing supporters, the rugby supporters, the afl supporters or the football supporters for instance. Where as mums are frequently involved across the whole spectrum of events and frequently staff things that men with 9-5 jobs simply can't (eg. tuckshop).

Just remember, these people organised it for themselves, and with out them these schools probably couldn't run. And If all the private schools close, the state system definately will not be able to provide even its current level of schooling. ie. volunteers at private schools ensure kids on benefits attending state schools get a better education!

ffs. someone died and your just pissed because they spent money trying to get the best for their kid and took a few hours to relax at the end of it ?

I teach at Somerville, Churchie's 'sister' school if you like. All of the mothers meet when the girls graduate every year as a tradition, to celebrate their daughters growing up. I think you would celebrate too if you had put in the work for your child's education. These mothers have driven, cooked for, fundraised etc for these children since they were in prep. Most mothers are best friends, and many work more than one job to pay the fees, sacrificing a lot for themselves. The mothers lunch is a tradition at most GPS (Greater Private Schools) schools (I've now worked in two), with mothers taking a day off work to come along for a few hours, catch up with great friends and reminisce. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with this. The fathers do not pay for their wives in every case, so to generalise that the mums have nothing better to do is mistaken. Also, the parents do celebrate with their children, usually the following weekend.

The whole thing is extremely sad.

I went to a bodged private school, one of those $2000/year ones (from my understanding the well known ones are $10k+? I dunno).

I can recall maybe 3 or 4 fights from grade 8 - grade 11, grade 12 nothing.

All the fights involved people that had some problems upstairs, proper medically diagnosed stuff.

I went to both Public and Private, Grades 1-8 1/2 in Private and 8 1/2 to 12 in public.

The major difference between the two? The kids of the Private school had more fear of the parent's cracking down on poor grade performance then the the public school. This resulted in better general grade performance at a Private school.

As for school yard bullying, nothing much different. Fights existed at both, except perhaps the Private school fights were a little more 'discreet' (Don't want the teachers finding out). Perhaps you guys just weren't cool enough to know about the fights ;P

In this thread -

- Kat reveals she has absolutely no friends except for her f***** husband and her ugly children.

- Displays her stupidity by assuming that mothers of kids who have been going to school together couldn't possibly no eachother

Classic.

Wait, so you are actually calling me out on my typo even after toll already has?

And where did I make my error in comprehension? The reason you organise your little QGL dinners and always arrive alone and how you show such confusion and apparent jealously to these mothers having a party certainly signifies to me that you have no friends except your family. Am I right? Do you have no friends?

Answer that question honestly now.

I mean, you're an attention whore and always tell us all this s*** about your life for some reason even no-one gives a f***, yet I never hear any stories about going out with the girls or anything like that. It's always just 'elvis made a cabinet' or 'i got knocked up again' or 'lets have a qgl dinner i crave company from someone other than my family it is all so claustrophobic the walls are closing in on me nnnnnghhhhh'.

I don't think it's fear of parents cracking down but more a fear of "private" lessons with Father Pat if your grades drop.

phooks: just asking out of curiosity. it probably depends on the school/grade. i went to a GPS school and there were s*** tonnes of fights. not many at school itself, but pretty damn often on saturday nights when there was a party it was a giant f***ing melee. school on school type s*** sometimes with groups of 20-30 or more, some people bringing weapons. never heard about any of that s*** in public schools while we were at school apart from out wynnum way, LOL!

Kat: you consider someone reading your s***ty posts on here as stalking you? What the f*** is wrong with you?

And I guess your standard little responses mean you really do have no friends. Coming up soon is 'the reason I have no friends is because I am raising kids! You don't have kids so you don't know what it is like' defense. You're f***ing pathetic.

What the f***? All I know about you is what _you_have posted about yourself. I can't help that I have a brain capable of remembering it. I wish I didn't.

So why do you have no friends Kat? Is it because you are just as unpleasant irl as you are on the forums?

Sure they weren't her sisters? Was her mum in the pic too? Maybe they were on their way to a landmark education advanced course or something.
