Spamcop's incoming spam graph for the last week - note the big dip in the last 24 hours: http://trog.qgl.org/up/spamweek.gif This is due to a major US-based spam provider being shut down by its upstream Internet providers after some investigative work by someone from the Washington Post. Details are still forthcoming but their initial report is up and the Slashdot comments are interesting as well. |

I'd love to say f*** yeah, but I can't help but feel other assmunching spammers will just see it as a hole the market and ramp up their operations.

How is it a hole in the market tho? Spamming space doesn't seem like a finite resource?

Spamming space doesn't seem like a finite resource? Money to buy spam with like is; whatever companies that were paying this spammer will just look to other spammers to do business with? |

I just find it amazing that a US-based company was such a big thing - how did they not get sued into oblivion ages ago |

I thought spamming was a grey area of the law? I really don't see how it could be illegal. If spamming is illegal wouldn't junk mail be illegal?

Yeh you've got a point there Nathan, didn't consider the supply side as a finite resource.
You's think they could track them (spam buyers) down tho, they have to contact with you to get your money don't they? I guess its more complicated than that. |

Doesn't really work like that. Usually someone is responsible for hosting and the rest falls to the people pushing the penis pills. So everything involved in the process is done by the people that actually ship you the product.
In other instances it can be more like you say but it is usually from affiliates of a particular business that do the dirty work. If you shutdown servers the affiliates just shuffle hosts. This method also removes responsibility from the scumbag owner as if they have a no spam policy they really can't get pinged. Too many complaints ona particular affiliate tag they simply close that tag. Spamming solutions for example tend not to exist anymore. Just bp hosting for owners to run. I really really really doubt that 75% of the worlds spam was generated from within the US though. I call bulls*** on that one. China and the subcontinent are the worst offenders by far. |

must be purely a numbers game ... for every ten-thousand spams they must get 1 or 2 suckers with droopy dicks.

spamassassin + Thunderbird rules = maybe 2-5% of total emails I see are spam
I get 40-50 a day but they all get marked as read straight up and chucked in my trash, occasionally i check it for false positives but I haven't found one in aaaages that graphs impressive, 50% drop in spam from one company? ftw |
