i have just tried the step by step and havent quite got it right.

ive had it running before i did format and re-install last night.

outlook has downloaded all the emails both read and unread into outlook.
i can send and email in outlook to my own address but it doesnt arrive in my inbox in outlook. just my inbox in webmail (gmail)
there are no error messages when i send.

i have pop and smtp as pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com
i know one of these have to relate to my isp in some way but cant remember what i did last time to make this work.

any help. i know its just one minor change but cant remember what.

Make the smtp server your ISP's mail server.

remember the ports gmail use are not default.. check the settings in gmail for the ports - add those in and bingo

these are my settings in thunderbird

Incoming - pop.gmail.com:995 (SSL)
Outgoing - smtp.gmail.com:587 (TLS If Available)

Username for both is my gmail address, not sure if that would work in outlook since I don't have it. I guess I could try outlook express.

If you use outgoing mail authentication you don't need to set your ISP's SMTP server. Just follow GMail's instructions - they're idiotproof.
