I've got a friend with a SD card with some physical damage to it. It detects in windows but wants to format.

Anyone know a good data recovery place with experience with SD cards ?

Yes, she knows it's going to cost her big $$$'s.

problem is I think the interface part of the SD is shagged. I tried some data recovery software with no luck. So we pretty much need somebody who can read the chip directly.

give stellar phoenix a go on it

alternatively run dd over it under linux and copy it to an image file (raw output)
then try to read that once its on a reliable drive

If the interface is shagged I assume he won't be able to do any of that

is the card over 2 gig and you have an old reader? get a better reader that supports the new ones... the acronym escapes me.

I appreciate all the helpful suggestions, but I've tried everything mentioned, Either the interface is shagged, or the chip is. I think the only way to even take a shot at recovering is to try reading the chip directly. Hence I need somebody who can do that.

oh, ouch

if it were me, and important, I'd buy a cheapie USB reader and disassemble it to see if i could find a way to directly attach the corresponding pins to the right part of the chip

then again I once dreamed up a train that would go around my house delivering food and drinks at my whim, so you never know
