Topic: why is my tv out gray

I bought a tv out cable for my inspiron 1520 to hook up to a JVC LCD and the display on the LCD is gray and at a crap resolution. The output on the laptop is svideo and input on the cable SCART ... kind of wished i got a laptop that HDMI as I am guessing it would make it a lot easier.

Is there a piece of software out there that can do a better job than the nvidia drivers? The video card is a 8600m gt and OS vista.

Cheers

go into picture options on the jvc and change from ntsc to pal and profit if you havent already or go into the bios option on the dell and change region

No luck, no options in bios to change region and the a****** tv doesnt have it either. Anoying as hell as I paid 25 euros for this cable and i dont think it can carry HDTV either.

Running vista?
I had problems with S-Video out on my Dell XPS 1730.
Assuming you have Svideo connection to yellow video composite jack?
Look for an option S-video to composite, and I found vista kept forgetting, and changing it back. I basically spent like 30 min playing with all the options till i got it to work.

reread your post...whats SCART?

Oh god ... thanks for that fireblood, turns out it was a switch on the SCART thingy, changed it to composite and its working cheers!!

Now to figure out how to force 13XX x 720 resolution on the tv out, the nvidia driver only allows 1024x768 making it stretched.

Scart is a european tv input, never seen it before but i like it, it carries audio over it as well. Ps hows it going fireblood? I'm living in Amsterdam at the moment, rememeber you from the qgl days, cant remember what nickname i used then.

This thread doesnt look promising ... http://www.satelliteguys.us/dish-network-forum/128127-does-722-s-video-output-hd-signal-tv.html

My laptop only has a vga and svideo out so I'm guessing I cant get the full resolution to get rid of the side black bars on my tv? I can only get it to do 1024x768 ... think it might be time for a macbook pro or something heh

Look for a VGA -> Component cable. You'll then need a Component -> SCART adapter as well. Should work out a fair bit better than S-Video.

Once that's done you should be able to set custom resolutions in the Nvidia drivers. I'm not 100% on how laptop's are setup for drivers with nvidia video. Do you still have access to the Nvidia control panel?

Also, this solution won't carry sound so you'll have to sort that out another way (standard stereo with AUX in would do).

Oz Foxtel boxes use SCART and I used to have an old tv with SCART input

That's all composite will allow

Surely your LCD will have a VGA input?
Just get a VGA to VGA adapter and done!

Yeah dude it's going ok! Flat out and have no life, bit only 11 months to go! Congrats on making it to amsterdam! How long you staying over there? you working in an industry? or just making ends meet for travel purposes?
