Lifehacker: Apple has officially made movies available in the iTunes store in Australia, with a claimed 700 titles. Purchasing movies to own costs between $9.99 and $24.99. Rentals cost between $3.99 and $5.99; you have to start watching the rental within 30 days, and then can watch it as many times as you want in a 48 hour period. iiNet subscribers can feel smug, since iTunes content doesn't count against their download quotas.

This is cool, wonder how it will take off here.. Might give it a try, hope they have HD content.

been running for about a month now. a got a few movies from it, download speed is excellent and the quality is also awesome. most movies are around 1.3GB. and its greate cause it just auto syncs them to my iPhone.

what is the video format itunes uses? coz i wouldn't call a 1.3gb divx 'high quality'. even on divx's 3x that size you still see compression artifacts... especially in subtle colour gradients... they chuckify like jpg's with a limited colour palette.

I'd guess that they're H.264. I'm not really basing that on much, but that just seems to be the standard most things come in now.

There's a whole section of TV shows. They just got a bunch of Universal shows on AU store actually.
I'd guess that they're H.264.

Yeah I think they would be. Either that or MPEG-4 cause they go straight on iPhone etc without needing conversion and iPods only support MPEG-4 and H.264 due to their hardware decoder.
coz i wouldn't call a 1.3gb divx 'high quality'.

Well, for standard-def video its pretty good quality, but DivX isn't quite as good as H.264 for image quality comparisons.

I thought the new iTunes update saw the release of HD movies in the store???

Also, wtf - as if you'd just buy a movie. I'll only buy DVDs if they have good special features... a movie by itself isn't worth more than a few dollars.

yeh not a bad idea... some sort of monthly subscription would be pretty awesome.

If I rent a movie, can I chuck it on my iPod and then play it on the TV (I have the Apple cables) or can you only play rented stuff through iTunes? Would it be high quality or s***ty?
