hi guys.

just after some help, that hardcore storm killed my router. so we went and got a new one, and its sharing the internet, but its dropping out every 5min.

what i mean by dropping out is, if i dont try to use any internet apps after a couple of min, then open up say internet explorer, it will take like 30sec to connect to the website, then it will be fine.

i think this is the heart beat problem, but i can't remember what to do. can anyone help me?

WGr614 is the model number.

thanks

my router has some client watcher gizmo that'll reboot the router if it doesn't detect any computers connected, maybe yours is continuously rebooting?

check if it has a 'dial on demand' type deal. BPA has that dumbshoes login client too so it may be blocking the heartbeat & just dropping out, when you need the net again the router's just going ohs*** I've been disconnected, better redial.

it's been pretty well established for some time now that new netgear router + bigpuddle = firmware upgrade.

come to think of it... netgear's free support is available to you! they'll prolly tell you the same thing -slash- walk you thru the procedure

Check your cable lights, last night the modem was losing its sync to the upstream/downstream frequencies every few minutes.

Made the night boring enough that I watched Jennifer Love Hewitt's titties for 60 minutes.

it seems to be working now.

Yeh indeed it does, but it's all covered by insurance, except we have to wait until monday to get the damn telstra guys to show up with a new modem, and knowing telstra they probably won't come and say we never booked it. My cable modem's ethernet port doesn't work but it seems to work with the usb port, a bit weird if you ask me. It's as SB5100 and all the lights are green, but the activity light doesn't blink if you use ethernet, however when you plug it into usb away she goes.

anyway, good to see you've got your internet working again.

and then forget to provide an ethernet modem. I was blown away to find the usb drivers that ship with the current motorola usb models require updating in order to work with current high-end mobos.

MS Windows Update ftw

the SB5100 cable modems are meant to come with both ethernet and usb enabled. that being said who knows what telstra does these days. All i know is that they are idiots.

I rang them up one day to ask why my cable kept on dropping out a while ago, and he said it was a problem at my end and that they'll send a service technician out to have a look, I said i'd get back to them on the service call, and see how the cable works. Anyway as soon as i got off the phone it worked fine again..... the next tuesday the cable tech shows up at my door.... stupid telstra

Flip the router over and look at teh model type. After WGR614, does it have a number like V4?

If not, its the origional version and has many known probs. I had my one replaced and the V4 model fixes these kind of issues.

Had the same router and never had a problem once I did the firmware upgrade and changed the MTU to 1500. I did have a problem with the router dying every 5 minutes once but that was because there was a problem with the power(Energex came out and fixed something near us which fixed it, fluro lights were the only other thing which seemed to have problem when the power got f***ed).

temporary fix if the new firmware doesnt work properly;
run the loginclient on one machine(thats on the most) and forward port 5050 from the router to that machine.

you'll have to unplug the cable modem and let it sit for 10 minutes for the mac address to reset so your machine can forward its own.
