i've only ever used the expression for either an unwanted pregnancy or pregnancy out of wedlock that results in a marriage proposal.

but I doubt there is a dictionary definition, but I can see how it would be offensive for someone who is pegnant to be referred to as 'knocked up'

Well, you would think if you were going to give it a proper explination that it would be done by someone with at least SOME education.

At the moment it looks like no-one over 15 bothers to log onto urban dictinary and add a description.

THEN if you want to go a step up and use www.dictionary.com

It says slang for pregnant... OWWWWWW real offensive

1 entry found for knocked up.
Main Entry: knocked up
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: pregnant
Usage: slang

haha my arguement isn't if it is or isn't offensive. My arguement was that the only back up they had for that were decriptions made up by 15 year olds :)

I am fully aware that some people find it offensive and I am not here to say "ZOMG you are wrong" :P

In the standard Australian venacular, Knocked up means pregnant .. nothing more nothing less

I have seen the term used with a 34 year old married mother expecting their second child.

As to wether you get offended or not, that your own business (personally getting worked up over any phrase is pointless, the meaning of the word is far more important then the spelling or even which particular word you select).

You're a bogan from Ipswich if you can't think 'knocked up' is a better way to describe someone being pregnant.

'Jap' use to be a shortned word for Japanese. Now it's Offencive slang.
This is because of the way people used it...

Same thing happened to Knocked Up IMO.
I don't really think it's totally offencive, but then again I wouldn't find Jap offencive.
Go up to a person of Japanese decent and call them a 'Jap' and i'll bet you that you'll get slapped or atleast a dirty look.

Yes because heaven forbid you should use a non proper word in day to day life to describe a situation :P

Oh and I don't find the phrase offensive, so you guys can stop trying to put little subtle meanings in your post.

In order to be offended by something someone says you must respect them. If you have no respect for them then there is no reason to be offended.

But onto the particular at hand, it would depend how it was said and in what context but generally no, knocked up isn't offensive.

Surely the word "improper" must be printed on pregnancy tests somewhere (I'm implying instructions to pregnancy tests is the extent of your appreciation of literature)

It all depends how you said it, where you said it and why you said it.
In general its not offensive but if you say it to someone who got pregnant from someone that ran off, then its understandable that they would be offended, but even then its down to how you say it.

"That filthy slut got knocked up by those 8 guys she f***ed at that party" : Offensive.

"Jill told me she got knocked up recently by her boyfriend" : Not Offensive (stating a fact).

As others have said, for a term to be offensive it must have intent behind it.

"f*** off" can be said in many 2 main ways, one being directly offensive (telling someone to f*** off) or as a statement of surprise and bewilderment.

English is a great language for subtle and not so subtle nuances in pitch, tone and body language.

Sif get offended about 'knocked up', it's the same as 'up the duff' or 'bun in the oven'. Would you get offended if someone said:
"Kat, you make threads which imply a personal significance to your own life but don't provide any details with said significance. Then you get snappy with people who try to suss out said significance. Either make an entire emo thread or none at all."?
It's entirely rhetorical, would you be offended if someone said that?

hahaha if I make a thread and ask a question and then give reasons as to why I asked, I get told to stop making threads about myself.

making a thread you start yourslef about yourself is entirely acceptable, just about everyone does it. Considering they started the thread its to be expected, depending on the topic of course....

its when you take other peoples threads and make them about yourself (not always entirely your own fault) thats pisses most off I assume. sometimes its not your fault, somtimes it is. More often than not, you make a subtle post that will eventually lead back to you and claim it wasn't your intention to do so, but its obvious to all that it was.

Yeah what spidz said, it's the subtelty that - whether you intend for it to be there or not, although I've been told you are smarter than you seem so I'll go ahead and assume you put it there on purpose - gets you classed as an attention whore and annoying and thread-derailing. Feel free to post a personaly thread with some background info (just not a long endless rant with '...discuss' at the end). Also try not to bite when people like Lowgoz troll you, it takes him like 10 seconds to post some random words and like 4 pages to get the thread back on track.

Those are terms which have no respect. Some people use them with you becuase they do not respect you at all.

If they did not dislike you then they would say 'she is pregnant' etc etc.

I was coerced into attending a baby shower once. She was only doing it to try and prove to her girlie friends that she had me under her thumb. I didn't want to go and quite pointedly brought this to her attention, (s'kay, she had large dark sunglasses so it all ended up ok).

Anyway's, despite telling her twice, that I thought it would be a bad idea for me to attend I was forced to tag along anyway (something about some deal of not pressing charges??).

So, under protest I go along thinking how much this sucks when get this epiphany!

I pretend to be this completely thumb printed hen pecked potential husband until my inevitable opportunity presents itself....

When all the pressies were being dished out was dating at the time, the wench pulls out this little red dress for a present.

Without missing a beat, I reach over all smiles an effected "ga ga" noises, deftly ripping the outfit off the coat hanger in front of all these chicks and placed the coat hanger in one hand, the red dress in the other grinned an with a wink said
"There ya go love, just what the doctor ordered, it’s the deluxe edition see, even comes with a bandage's conveniently coloured so you don't get squeamish about all the blood!

As I walked out onto the patio to join the couple of other luckless lads, you could have heard a pin drop ;P

Well.. actually, it was a coat hanger I heard getting dropped, either that or that other funny sound objects make as they're embedded into a wall just near your ear...

Needless to say, I never had to worry about attending any more dumb ass baby showers
