ABC site has a short but interesting article on what really behind the current world oil prices. According to it, the petrol companies are not really directly responsible for the prices but other various factors.

Interesting read, pity it's bit short though.

I was thinking of a LPG conversion for my car - considering that I do 1000km every week, it should pay for itself quite soon at current prices.

It's common knowledge that the big oil companies splash out on profiteering whenever they have a credible excuse to cover it. Natural disasters affecting supplies that aren't the supplies already in the ground being bought being one of thier favourites. Such sneaky periods are rarley detected as they only last 2 weeks to 1 month.

Just like the banks, everyone knows how much they charge for all kinds of "nothing" services.

The ACCC may say one thing, but we all know how much they say, yet how little they do.

Conclusion: Big Oil is still as bad as you think.

Supply and demand. However oil prices behave a bit strange, in that they are also affected very strongly by expectations of supply and demand in the future, more so than most goods and services. What we got recently is a nice old fashioned supply-shock.

A_W shut the f*** up. Seriously, is there a thread where you haven't posted some clueless bulls***? OMGZ A COMPANY IS PROFITEERINGZ?! That's what companies do. Either go start your own oil company bringing oil to the masses at the price it "should" be, use alternatives to oil, or shut the f*** up.

A_W: they have to take the good with the bad

when the oil coming out from the refineries is cheaper than the oil in their tanks consumers aren't going to pay the difference. consumers will go the other petrol station that just got its fuel deliveries at the cheap price. ultimately the price will probably end up falling somewhere between(inclusive) the cheap price and the expensive price depending on how much supply / demand there is and how sensitive suppliers/consumers are to price changes.

I used to live behind a petrol station, and the price changed when they felt like it, and didnt seem to coincide with deliveries at all.

Afaik the petrol stations don't really have much say in the pricing, they do what the oil companies say or get shafted. They themselves make s*** all out of selling petrol. The oil companies have most of the control, and they have most of the information about the supply, if not demand as well.

A_W: Excellent. Don't reply. Don't reply to any more threads because your constantly spouting crap and when you aren't doing that you're agreeing with everyone (read: cocksucking).

Mantra: did you read my post at all. it didn't say the price of fuel at a single service station was regulated by the deliveries to that service station.

it said the price at a service station is affected by the price other service stations have to pay and the demand/supply at particular times.
