hey guys, im not very good with networking and this problem is starting to really bug the s*** outta me
i used to have access to a router, but its been taken now so i dont have it no more. Main computer connect directly to internet, and has 2 network cards. My computer is hooked up to one of the network cards in the main computer. Ive run the XP network setup thing, made main computer the "connects directly to internet and other comps connect to this comp" thing, and my computer is setup to connect directly to the main comp. The problem is, the connection keeps dropping out occasionally, and if the main comp restarts, the connection does not re-establish on my computer :( I have to go through the whole bulls*** again in the setup and magically it works after i spend about 30 mins going back and forth re-establishing the connection :| i dont know what makes it tick, but could anyone here give me ideas on howot establish a permanent setup that the computer does not have to think about anything?? cheers for any help and sorry if i sound confusing |

all you need to do is go into the properties of the network connection that has the internet connected to it and go to the advanced tab and select allow other computers to connect through this connection.
XP will then manually assign 192.168.0.1 to the other network card you have and will turn on dhcp for the network card. The other pc should then just pickup the DHCP server and get an IP and off you go. Saying that, I have seen that once you have used the wizard it screws things up for some reason, even if you seemingly have put back all the settings. Also, delete and network bridges that may have been created by the wizard, you dont need them. |

i used to have access to a router, but its been taken now so i dont have it no more. Main computer connect directly to internet, and has 2 network cards. My computer is hooked up to one of the network cards in the main computer.this is how I currently have mine set up and don't have the hassle you're describing, which means you should be able to do it yourself too without the hassle Ive run the XP network setup thing, made main computer the "connects directly to internet and other comps connect to this comp" thing, and my computer is setup to connect directly to the main comp.I've never used that wizard, all I've done is right-click 'my network places' and click properties, right click the icon for the nic I have plugged into my cable modem and then click the advanced tab, and check the box under 'internet connection sharing' that reads 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection'. This causes windows to automagically give my second nic an ip address and run a dhcp server which handles the configuration of other machines in my house. As for the automation of the actual internet connection on the gateway machine, well I use bigpond cable and they provide a little util which automatically logs in at bootup or if the connection is dropped, it rarely seems to have any issues keeping the connection up. Chances are there's a way of automating whatever your connection is too. I'm not sure why yours drops out, one possibility is your gateway computer's power saving setup - there's a chance you have windows set to turn off devices after a period of time to save power (default I think), and windows might be dumb enough to power down a nic despite it being in use to trasmit/receive data, simply because no keyboard/mouse input is being detected on the gateway computer. Just a guess. It could be anything really, even just one of those dumb issues that doesn't seem to have any resolution other than a format and reinstall. |

cheers heaps all, ive tried everything youve said and its showing some signs of progress.
one thing ive noticed that keeps tricking me, i have to pull the power out of the cable modem if i change/f*** with the networking connections to the modem itself. all i can do now is wait till i get ahold of xp cd and reformat host computer cause it is in a serious state :( im connected to optus broadband also. i have blackice firewall as well, i keep having to re-allow my connection to the host computer cause it keeps changing the ip address for some reason. what gets me really cut is i have access to everything on the host computer and vice versa, but the net just doesnt seem to like working for me :( |

first suggestion.. ditch blackice.. get zonealarm if you want a firewall.. or use kerio winroute to share the connection (it also comes with the kerio firewall) |

Ok, i have a problem with a home network as well.
I have 2 Winxp machines (1 english pro, 1 swedish home) now... The pro is the gateway to the net and can see the home machine. it cannot access files from it however and keeps getting this message \\Home2 is not accesable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Now the home machine is connecting to the net via the pro machine. It can use the internet but cannot see or access the pro machine. I used the xp-cd home network setup wizard. Any help is appreciated, thanx. |
