I've been getting a hankering for a jap type RPG recently but can't seem to find anything around other than the FF series but dont know consoles games selections very well.

Anyone have some ideas for a good (non s***ty kiddy) jap style RPG game thats out or will be out soon to tide me over untill FF12 comes out?

PC or ps2 Prefered.

Hmmm hard to describe a japanese RPG game to somebody who doesn't already know what you mean.
Go look at the Final Fantasy series of games Genereal_Specific.

Breath of Fire isn't recent IIRC, but is brilliant. Same with Chrono Trigger and (im assuming) it's sequel Chrono Cross.

Grandia II kicks ass. As does legend of dragoon, lufia: rise of the sinistrals and wild arms.

FF7 kinda ruined RPG's for me, none of them live up to the awesomeness of FF7. BEST GAME EVAR.

Agreed Crizane ... all RPG's must face the harsh scrutiny of FF7 as well from me.

I've been looking at all the other ones listed so far and the reviewers really havn't been kind.
For Suikoden IV the guy confesses to being a major fanboy and still says the game could have been a f***tonne better :/

depends how old you want to go. ill just list a few of my personal favs.

-snes-
Breath of Fire 1 and 2
Secret of Mana
Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2, theres a translated version out)

-psx-
Breath of Fire 3
Chrono Cross (never finished but damn it was good)
legend of Mana

-Gamecube-
Tales of Symphonia (best rpg in a hell of a long time)

hope that helps some. i'd suggest breath of fire 3. sure its a psx game but its just so kick ass. i'm still trying to get a copy for myself, its become a tad rare unfortunatly.

I really dislike the leveling process in these games. Do they all depend on levels and weapons?

yeah its brilliant. exactly what the 1st movie should of been like. got lots of quirks of the game too (well besides it being based entirely from the ff7 game lol) such as after the fight between tifa and someone (dont think his name is mentioned) his cell phone starts ringing and its the music from when you win a fight. just small stuff like that i loved about it. i'm gonna buy it when it comes out on umd for my psp
