I was asked by a friend to try and fix his computer... This is after a computer shop "fixed it".

He took his computer to the shop and it worked fine, except that sometimes his burner was not being detected and sometimes his secondary HDD was also not detected... Since it has come back from the "repair man" it now repeatedly comes up with this error dialog

http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/telscum/s***/error.gif

When he questioned the computer store about WTF they had done to his otherwise normally working machine they said that they had found 8 different viruses, one of them being "cactus" or some s***, apparently this is some worm that deletes linked files in the registry... Thing is though, he had no problems prior to this...

I am inclined to think that the computer store perhaps infected his computer while testing his HDD in a test machine. They installed Norton to detect and remove these viruses and they are so dodgy that they didn't even un-install it when they were done, they just deleted the contents of the Norton folder in program files...

Anywho anyone know anything about this error message ?? When you click close on the error dialog it just comes up again, and again, and again... I said to him an easy option is to just format but that is a last option type thing as he has a lot of AutoCAD and Quicken stuff he would need to backup (he should back it up anyways I suppose)...

I had forgotten how gay Win95/98/me is...

Sif it is my PC... The bastards at this shop have convinced him (in the past) to get a new mobo, and therefore a new case to suit that mobo for no reason. More dodgy than a mechanic... Wish I knew the name of the place so I could tell poeple not to go there

not sure. maybe try sifting through the microsoft site. It's huge, there may be something hidden somewhere.

Or try some anti-virus sites, norton etc. see if there is anything there.

I don't know anything else sorry.

I thought Nortons itself was a prime suspect in most support calls?

AGH!! Whatever you do, never use ME!! I installed a friends computer with ME, and within a week or so it was completely bogged and bloated. We ditched it very quickly for 98SE (and then eventually Win2k).

Yea I told him that ME sucks a-hole, but he only just bought it - that computer shop loaded it once when they were "fixing" his computer and they sent him the bill haha... They must be pretty wealthy store owners...

uh-huh...

anyway... did you get the thing sussed out?

or did you have to format & reinstall?

I only looked at it last night and to see if I could get it woking properly... I spent 3 hours trying to sus out what was causing the error and s*** and trying to install a network card and stuff. He also has another computer that is a bit dodgy, floppy works in windows, but not DOS, CD-ROM works in windows, but not DOS etc etc So I had to copy win98 to the HDD and s*** install from there on that one blah blah.

He is paying to do it though so it is ok I guess... I will just tell him that I do a format and re-install or nothing, I don't have the times/skilz to work out software errors, his program files etc are also in a bit of a shambles !! Stupid old people...

I will format the ME machine and try to get him to use an evaluation copy of 98SE, he only has a celery 550 so win2k is not a good idea I suppose... I also have to get his network going (2 computers, a hub, 2 network cards and 2 bits of cable - they even taught me that in TAFE :p) so yer the network will be no dramas when both machines have a clean install of an OS... He is paying me money too haha dun know how much yet though... I could prolly get a bit though, he sorta goes "ooooh ahhhhh" when you type regedit in run lol...

All these errors remind me of the saying "Never pick up anything you can't leave in an instant if you feel the Heat around the corner".

"Never install anything that you couldn't reinstall in an instant if you felt the s*** coming around the corner"

Clean reinstalls will improve your experience. Always partition into two drives, primary, and data. Always be able to reinstall the primary from scratch on a whim, and you'll never go wrong.

Here endeth the lesson.

Yea he has 3 partitions and 2 physicl disks. The disk that is not partitioned is D: and that is where he keeps his work stuff backed up. And he uses C: for Windows and E: for other data and program files.

He said he wanted to avoid doing a format, for what reasons I don't exacxtly know, but that is all he is getting off me - I dun know what to do otherwise...

Windows ME should have been packaged as Windows Millenium Error by Microsoft.

The CD is actually an error itself.

Try and convince him to reinstall. Anything else will be boilerplate, and he'll quite likely run into some other problem down the line, even if he doesn't go mad trying to fix this particular problem.

Years have experience have taught me that it's not worth the hassle unless you're not attached to your sanity. Bite the bullet, and live a longer, healthier life.

Funniest thing about ME has to be the images when it is installing... the one of that chick using system restore is gold, makes me laugh so hard... like one click of a mouse and the biggest baddest s*** in the whole wide world is all gone and everyone is happy again... bahahahaha :o)
