Stez what do you want in your notebook or what does the notebook need to be able to do?

It is all well and good saying give me notebook deals but that is just a stupid thing t osay.

Specify if you are after performance, battery life, screen size, video capacity, hisk space, wireless, com port etc.

Becuase anybody ... including yourself ... can look in the news paper every day and on the internet at websites to find out prices of notebooks, so why would somebody want to help somebody being lazy or not providing decent information or request?

Well if you don't mind auction then I definitely recommend checking out Grey's online site for Dell's auction, yes that's from Dell not some random eBay-ers ;).

You can usually pick up some awesome bargain, my boss just picked up a Dell D400 RPP for about $4000 for $1700. Nothing's wrong with it, came with all the CDs etc, we have a few PCs at work that are bought from there. Some items are brand new some have been opened for demo and it usually state it pretty clearly.

The only problem I can see is the warrenty, they may not be as long as a brand new one (some don't have any depends on the sales type). But if you're looking for a bargin you can beat it.

Naturally, I will assume that you know how auction works (unlike HeardY and his eBay adventure, n00b ;)), see something you like, check out the spec., check out the full price for a new one with similar/equvillent spec. Place a resonable bid and profit! ;)

My dad bought an Inspiron 1150 about a week ago and its sitting here beside me

$1500 he got a P4 2.8Ghz system with 512mb of DDR ram, DVD Burner (yes burner) with win xp home and Ms works (word and some other crap)

1024x768 res LCD is about the only drawback

60gb hard drive uh and a bunch of other stuff

cant fault it!

i have a well pretty dumb question...i know centrino is the wirless technology and not the CPU but if u have a Centrino complient Laptop does that mean you dont need to buy a wireless network card? is it integrated? or does it just mean that the chip set supports wireless

If it's a centrino notebook, means theres a good chance that its wired for wireless. Meaning antennae and s*** running through the screen down the back of the notebook, into the back of an empty mini-pci slot, where you just need to add the Intel card, if its not already there..

centrino is the biggest marketting ploy Intel has ever made.

A centrino, is simply a combination of the following;

Intel mobile processor
Intel 855 Chipset
Inbuilt Wireless lan.

if someone sells you a 'centrino' laptop which has no wireless lan, you're getting ripped off, cause it's not a centrino. :P

there's a few notebooks floating round with the same technology, only with a Radeon chipset, (has 9100IGP or whatever it is in it, with the radeon 9600/9700 onboard, and wireless lan) but it's not technically a 'centrino'. It will still have the same battery life and such, because it's still running the intel mobile processor.

To correct him... its a little more specific.

The Notebook must have the following...

Intel Pentium M CPU
Intel 855* Chipset (Excludes new Sonoma Centrinos which have a modified 915 I believe)
Intel Pro Wireless Sollution

Example. We sell a Fujitsu laptop at work, its called a 1212. It has a Pentium M - 1.5ghz cpu, and it runs on the intel 855 chipset, but instead of Intel pro wireless... it has an Atheros chip built in for wireless, therefore, it is not "Centrino"

But yes, best marketing ploy ever by intel, not only does it trick the s*** out of people but it also makes it exceptionally hard to explain.

The other thing that s***s me to tears is how they've now ditched Ghz in favour of processor numbers.

EG. We sold a compaq 2267ap for $1299 which had a 1.5ghz Celeron-M cpu in it with a processor number of 340 (3 = Celeron) We also currently sell a laptom caleld a Compaq M2031. It has a 1.3ghz Celeron M in it, but the cpu has a 1mb cache (newer C-M) instead of a 512k cache. Its processor number is 350. Therefore, the 350 is a faster CPU.

That is all.
