the actual game looks a lot like it did on the GC, is the hardware any better?

what?

Its an ARM 9 and ARM 7 processor. Its much like an advanced N64, but with a touch screen. I do agree with you that it looks like Double Dash though (so bright and shiney). Can't wait for this release!

People are sayin that the DS is more powerful than the 64, but it can't be. I'd like to see it run Banjo-tooie.

What do you mean it can't be? The texture resolution on mario 64 DS is higher and the coins arn't sprites anymore. Theres more power in this machine than the 64. Theres just no texture correction hardware.

You're thinking the snes, I don't think there were coins in MK64

mario 64 DS is not Mario Kart. The Coins in Mario 64 were Sprite planes, as were teh big metal boulder things that rolled down the mountain on Bom-omb on the Summet (1st level). The Coins in Mario 64 DS are 12 sided polys as the developers had more power to use with the DS.
Chances are we won't be seeing many rare titles on the DS. I'll be happy if goldeneye/PD makes it.

I know that adam, what i'm sayin here is that the DS is not as powerful as the 64.

Mario Kart DS looks way better than Mario Kart 64, because Nintendo know the ins and outs of 3D now and can make an amazing looking game on a weak machine.
Back when MK64 came out, Nintendo had only just started to break into the 3D scene, and were no where near as experanced as they are now.

That's a really s*** "explanation", considering Starfox/Starwing and Stunt Race FX came out years before Mario Kart 64.

Yeah I wouldn't say that experience would be all of the reason.

From the DS Wiki:
Video:3D Core

The DS has only one 3D core, so it's only possible to use 3D on only one screen at same time.

* 3D is rendered directly on LCD, not on framebuffer.
* 3D is handled 100% in hardware.
* Supports Z-buffer, w-buffer, stencil-buffer and anti-aliasing.
* Polygon Rate: 120,000 Polygons (triangles) per second
* Pixel Fillrate: 30 million pixels per second
* Geometric Transformation: 4 million vertex per second
* (from the videos I saw from E3-2004, it did not appear to have bilinear filtering)

Processor:Main

The DS has two main processors
An ARM9 (ARM946E-S @ 67MHz)
An ARM7 (ARM7TDMI @ 33MHz)

Each chip has 16Kb of memory that can be shared between the two chips. (32Kb total)

From cyberiapc:

N64 Technical Specs:

CPU: 64-bit R4300i RISC (93.75MHz) / 64-bit data paths, registers with 5-stage pipelining
Co-processor: 64-bit RISC (62.5MHz)
RAM: 4MB (36Mb) upgradeable
Graphics: Pixel Drawing Processor (RDP) built into co-processor
Colors: 16.7 million (32,000 on screen)
Polygons: 150,000 per second
Resolution: 640x480 pixels
Sound: 16 to 24-channel 16-bit stereo (up to 100 PCM channels possible)

Similar Polygon counts; not sure about how more advanced the 3d hardware is but it really seems that the DS would be able to handle most 64 games. Anyone with more technical knowledge agree?

n64 ran at higher resolution, and the DS can get away with the 64 ports cos of the lower resolution im guessing. who f***ing cares anyway, both metroid and mario look awesome on the system.

and rare is working on DS titles, none announced at the moment, but we can only hope for some version of goldeneye 007 or perfect dark.

What was wrong with the other mario games? Mario kart 64 is still one of my favorite games.
