Cmos display type wrong
press f1 to run setup
press f2 to use default and start

I flashed the bios to get around an old password. now i get the above error.

i have tried f2, the video card is an s3verge (trying to setup unix box).

You flashed the BIOS to get rid of a password?

You didn't remove the battery or try the CMOS Memory Reset jumper first?

I'd say you need to clear your CMOS by doing either of the above first, remove the battery unplug the power and leave it off for 5-10 minutes, find the jumper (should be near the battery or BIOS or both) and move it from one set of pins to the other (should only be 3 pins total so only two positions possible)

Dude, dont use terminology you don't understand :p

You didn't 'flash' anything, you cleared the CMOS by removing the tiny electrical charge which is held in it by the power when the PC is on and by the battery when the PC is off - 'flashing' is when you physically update the version of your BIOS

I'd say all thats wrong is your CMOS settings are incorrect, if its an older PC get the CHS off the hard drive (cylinders/heads/sectors) and set them in the CMOS as well as the correct boot order and all that other crap

whats that stuff mean?

and from what i read in manual etc, yeah its a cmos error in that the cmos doesnt match the bios or something?

How old is it? in older mobo's you're able to set the CHS of the hdd which you can usually find on the sticker of the hdd.

cmos display type? that sounds like in the cmos there's a setting that says xga/vga/svga or maybe it's colour/monochrome. it's usually somewhere around the main page of the bios setup when you enter it.

f2 will usually always give you default compatibility values for everything in there, meaning that no matter what's gone wrong you can always get into the bios setup program, sometimes these may not match something that's in your computer, thus the settins are wrong. I think I remember that sort of error message on my 486 when I added more RAM into it I had to manually go into the bios & tell it I had more ram. Sounds like this pc is pretty damn old.

Thanks for all the advice,

it turns out it had nothing to do with the CMOS, it was a fu**ed IDE cable...weird painfull stuff.

i now have a unix problem which warrants a new thread ...i hope.
