This isn't meant to be another whinging "When is the next QGL" post. So please read it through before banning me :)
I don't remember seeing anything about QGL lans for nearly a year now and the last I remember was something along the lines of looking for venues and checking legal liability (if I've missed seeing a thread about it please forgive me). Is that still the case? Is there anything that we can do to assist? Do you need people to take on work like venue hunting, or even simple labourers to do set up? If legal costs for determining liability or hardware costs (network equipment etc) are an issue do you need donations? I guess ultimately I'm saying I'm willing to help get another QGL happening and I'm sure others feel the same. |

Ok, its a fair question, so heres an update on where things are at.
ANZ contacted us and let us know that the courts we used to use for QGL are no longer available for use. They said they had a few conference rooms and such that we could have a look at, and a couple of us went there earlier this week to scout them out, but they aren't really suitable for the purpose of running lans. So we're back to trying to find a venue. At this point we're looking at going back to running smaller lans, mainly because finding venues for large 500 person lans is a) really difficult and b) really expensive. The insurance problem was partly coupled with ANZ (they wanted us to have $10 million in public liability to run lans there, and now with this recent change they decided they wanted $20 million so it completely ruled it out). Anyway, if anyone does have venues, that can hold up to say 300 people, post them here. I know we did this a while ago, and we've been looking for the list made up then, but it seems to have gone walkabouts so if people could post them again (or mail them to us) that'd be rad. Edit: Just to add a bit more info for potential venues. It needs to have lots of power (preferably 3 phase), not a lot of natural light (or some way to block natural light like curtains on windows or something), air con would be a definate benefit coming into summer, and it needs to be big enough to fit 300 people with tables, chairs, computers and room to move in between. Also, any info about what sort of public liability they expect us to have to run an event there would be extremely useful, but we can probably find that out ourselves if it goes that far. last edited by Khel at 18:28:24 04/Nov/04 |

What about UQ? The UQ Centre could hold plenty of people. I'm not sure if someone checked this out last time it was suggested.

worth a look BTP is equipped with a fibre optic backbone and has a Gigabit Ethernet capability. The standard broadband access at BTP is 100Mbit. Bandwidth upto 1Gbit can be provided on request. This means by utilising BTP's infrastructure you can be assured fast internet access, web casting capability that is both cost effective and time efficient providing greater flexibility. last edited by Denominator at 18:56:17 04/Nov/04 |

We checked out UQ last time, it was booked out way way in advance, I think about 6 months or more last time we checked, so yeah I guess we're looking for something with a bit more availability than that.
We'd sort of prefer something on the south side, or I guess inner west, mainly because theres already so many lans on north side. North side has GGF, Nudgee, Switch and others, and QGL was always the south side lan to balance these out, so we're aiming to try and keep that happening. Good to give people a choice instead of just basing everything on the north side :) |

i think QGL lans have been waiting too long can we just have a lan and seeing as the difference between the north side and south side is like a 30 minute drive give or take i think we could live with it.
city hall wouldnt that be a bit too pricey? |

Have you tried any of the halls at schools ? I think it was suggested last time but Mt.Gravatt State High School have a decent size hall. I'm not sure about how much power you're gonna get out of it though.

Only needs $5 million public liability too (much nicer than the $20 million ANZ wants). |

So it's mainly the issue of venue then? Fair enough.
The only venues I know of off the top of my head are inner city (no parking). I'll have a hunt around though. The technology centre place sounds bloody good. I'd think one of the key criteria is going to be reasonable parking. |

On a side note, rather than just "have you tried there" how about if people know about places they check there for more detail before suggesting them to the QGL guys. Save them some work.

wasn't it decided last time that the logan convention centre or sports hall or whatever it was had the requirements? We were only looking at the Logan Entertainment Centre as an emergency venue at the time because renovations were under way at ANZ. Then ANZ came back and said renovations were finished so we held it there anyway. Which is lucky, because the pricing that the LEC came back to us with was ludicrous, they wanted us to hire a master of ceremonies to be on hand to do announcements and who knows what the f*** else, as well as a bunch of other people we didn't need, it wasn't going to end up costing a fortune. |

edit.
This may seem slightly obvious, and theres probably a reason why it wouldn't work, but what about the RNA Showgrounds? Its central, they have carparking, they are big arse rooms (clicky) I'm guessing these have been brought up before, so why did it not work out? Just for intrest's sake, what sort of floor area did ANZ have? whats an ideal size in square metres for the venue to be? last edited by mongie at 22:39:48 04/Nov/04 |

hehe six degrees of separation at work here. I am reading the thread and checking out the BTP and thinking that it looks by far the best place...check out the web site and realise its on land that used to be owned by a workmate of mine years ago..had many a barby and drink there. He had a farm there where he used to break horses in for a hobby..When he retired he sold the land for s***load.
Certainly looks like it could handle a QGL lan for sure.. |

fade if i remember that had lack of power?
As for tafedoods comment the local lans need the "big" lan to bring back the population, since qgl has not been running the community within brisbane has shrunk to about 20%. not that it is a bad thing, alot of younger people have left and given up on here. i only said alot not all unfortuantely :( |

Isn't the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in the CBD not on the north side? Do you mean where they hold GGF? If so, that isn't even in the same city, let alone just 'on the northside'. |

Does anyone else find it more than a little hypocritical that Tafedood has used the QGL forums multiple times, to pimp a multitude of lans, even coming into a thread about the next QGL lan to do so, and then turns around and tells us all how QGL is not necessary?
If we're so un-necessary, go pimp your lans elsewhere thanks. As for venues, I think we checked BBC last time as well, their facilities were mega booked too, but it could be worth checking out again. Clairvaux was really really f***en hot, so we're not in a hurry to go back there again. Also wasn't the best value for money considering the venue. As for size, I believe the courts at ANZ were about 900 square metres, but that may also have included the stands. Anything around the 600 to 700 square metre mark is probably what we'd be looking at now. The auditorium at BTP is about 640 square metres, which would be pretty perfect size wise, so its still looking pretty good :) If we want it smaller they can also cut it into 3 sections and just give you a third or two thirds of it, which is pretty nifty. last edited by Khel at 04:00:03 05/Nov/04 |

Southside bs aside - what's wrong with using the Entertainment Centre? If it's way too costly, then fair enough, but it's hardly a problem to get to - hell - it's probably easier to get to than ANZ is for the majority of people & it's entirely airconned... Or is it simply too "northside" ?

If its available and not too expensive, then please for the love of f***ing god, enable it.personally while it can be nifty i dont really care about it, the only reason i'd accually want it would be for steam. theres always gonna be people having trouble with expired tickets. lan cs:source is gonna be awesum, DC-final is gonna fully rock! battlefield2 is pure jizum!! i havnt been to a lan in years. so this will be an excuse to mingle with u fellers and try my smooth talk on Obes edit:did the insurance increase before or after the 'backpunch'? last edited by Fuknukle at 10:53:51 05/Nov/04 |

If you decided to hold the lan at this venue, what would be a ball park figure of the attendance number? I'd say around 250-300 confortably. The most seating we ever had at ANZ was around 430 for 900sq meters, but had done up a table layout that could have fit in around 470 in theory. To be honest, we've discussed it and don't think we'd get the numbers we used to, and we don't really want to run big lans as we did in the past to try and prevent any burntout from occuring. So we'll start off smaller, then possibly work our way up again if need be. Edited - my numbers were wrong, and have since been fixed. Was leaving out 100 or so spots ;) last edited by Saint at 11:47:44 05/Nov/04 |

Chandler was too pricey, as were RNA and Convention Centre. They'd be good venues for a big final or something though.

If it was somewhere like the sheraton, people would also need to be allowed to use the sheraton parking for their cars for the duration of the event. I dont think people would appreciate paying admission to the lan and then having to pay another $25 or whatever for parking for the weekend :)

Does anyone else find it more than a little hypocritical ... to pimp a multitude of lans, ... and then turns around and tells us all how QGL is not necessary? Indeed, heck what ever can pull the attendance numbers is something the Brissy scene can nicely use. Pity that human nature (on all sides of all fences) seems to muddy things when it comes to lanning in Brisbane. I hope Khel and the boys have a win with a real kick arce event. |

that's what QGL needs.. contacts :P
so we can get awesome discounts im pretty sure we'd be willing to pay anything at the moment just to have one though, and as for distance to somewhere, it's not as if people walk with there computer to the place, they always get lifts or drive.. and people can car pool so if it was somewhere for example like the convention centre i don't think it would be that much of a problem, im not sure? |

How about Carindale PCYC.
It was to be the location of the ill fated "FellaLan" They dont have any info on the rooms on their website, but I seem to remember it was of a reasonable size... Clicky |

Car parking and prices are a big concern. Although a lot of us say "Yeah doesn't matter what it'll cost" there are ten times as many people who are thinking "Bugger that it's too expensive". The biggest thing is having sufficient loading zones and reasonably cheap parking nearby. We have conference rooms at work that would take 100-200 people but there is a two car loading zone about 50 metres from the building. I can't see people queuing on the road waiting to get into the loading zone two at a time.
I'm chasing the convention centre to see what their rates are. There is parking quite close (straight under the centre) and it costs about $8 for the whole day. I'd assume $8-10 to park for the whole day wouldn't be too excessive. |

Well...seeing ppl r saying ZORRO did this and so on..
heres what I actually said... "IF QGL WANT A VENUE..I CAN GET THEM BOONDALL ENTERTAINMENT CENTER FOR FREE"... There...thats what i offered... NO cost....just insurance needed to b worked thru..even that can be done... I was told much the same as was posted here..."ITS ON THE NORTHSIDE" Thats QGL's decision..accept it and move on... Don't bother to ask or say "HOW CAN HE DO THAT?"...cause I can... You will find the RNA is expensive.. I did have the prices for the Walter pageot pav...bout $3k a day..+ bump-in...sheraton..bout...$4k a day....southbank convention center...about $4.5k a day with NO bump in... O..typo..it isn't - as u can NOW see...the GGF hall i was talking about.... For those of u who need to kno..i work for LGAQ...hence my contact |

Agreed. Surely free venue has to be taken seriously - if you can, in fact, deliver. It would reduce costs by a huge percentage.
I've been hanging around QGL forums for fours years and am still a QGL lan virgin. And it's getting boring. If I'm willing to drive from the coast to the northside to savour the QGL experience, you slack bastards can surely handle another 20 minutes drive north. I agree with the idea of having net access - maybe limited to http:80 and 443. |

Considering how much work it is, I don't blame them. If it does happen, it'll be thanks to a s***load of hard, thankless work by a few people. I know I wouldn't be game to try organise something this big.

Khel, while I know what you mean about QGL being a southside lan, I have to agree, if Zorro (champ :D) can get BEC for nothing, its worth taking.
Most of the older people will be driving themselves anyway, and anyone who gets a lift will be able to con their soccer mum into taking them an extra 20 mins down the road. That is, of course, assuming the physical aspects of the venue work out ok. |

dont rule out venues without enough power also. generated power isnt that expensive and alot of the time cleaner than grid power if using descent gear. since mainly "venues" have the power that "halls" dont the cost goes up. so finding an air-con hall with good space etc and hiring a generator would probably work out the same as hiring a "venue" and work out alot better for you in terms of insurance & features (eg free parking)
the more focused a place is on hosting events the harder it actually is to run one without a big budget, think outside the box ;) btw khel if you need to talk bout hire of event equipment or whatever get in touch. |

As soon as my exams are over (12th) ill be talking to Griffith University about renting the sports hall for QGL.
The hall in question is at Nathan campus which is across the road from ANZ Stadium, a lot of you probabily know it because you all take your exams there and hate the place like me. Im an exectuive in the SRC so i can sweet talk the uni into giving the qgl guys a good deal - other than that i know that GU has a heap of conference rooms but i dont know of anything that will hold 300. ILl speak to facilities management and see what i can organise. Kehl ill get bear to relay anything i find thru to you |

How much did you guys used to spend renting out ANZ for a single lan roughly? I mean rent + net access etc, what does it cost roughly ?
And how many square metres do you want? Do you usually hire the tables out ? From memory, QGL owns the hubs etc already don't they? |

Kitten - I can assure you the RE has neither the space, nor the power necessary to host something like this :)
In addition, I don't know how 300 geeks would respond to the drunken taughts of an RE Sat/Sun crowd :) Would be a good laugh though. |

And how many square metres do you want?ANZ was around 900sqm, we'd be happy with around 600sqm. Do you usually hire the tables out ?Yes, see above. I think it costs around $1500. From memory, QGL owns the hubs etc already don't they?We share a cisco sponsorship with other Ausgamers LANs, so yes, as long as someone else doesn't have them. |

Just a quick question, I notice that the sydney people seem to be always able to hold LANS and stuff (going by the name of SGL). There was something about SGL on the TV the other week and I was wondering if the laws were different in QLD or have they just got a sweet deal?
As for the QGL debate, those small >100 LANS just arnt the same as a massive QGL. I've been to 2 QGL's and nothing is like it. There are always random halls floating around. Big props to the guys helping out the admins. The entertainment center would hold a f***load of people I should think. /end rant |

you're not going to hold a lan northside, even when you're being given premises for free saving _thousands_ in venue hire fees? am i missing something here? surely if people can make their way to anz stadium they can make their way to boondal.. |

okay as *some* of you know, i dont really come here anymore, i have pretty much given up on the point of looking here for a lan.
But today i worked another 10 hour day meaning this week will result in a total of 50 hours. A handsome pay cheque, but one thats draining on the body. Noone on msn. Noone available to call. All my "interesting" sites are boring. I come here and BAM. This sticky gets me wondering. 6 months advance booking, public liability. alot of discussion? If nothing else i want to promote the fact that i know many many people who would be willing to at least chip in a little bit of money, or help out a couple hours in advance if it was gonna happen. By a couple of hours in advance, i mean for a couple of hours each which means stuff like setting up tables/running lan cables can be helped with, etc. But more to the point making a point of its interesting so stop giving up! even if we wait 6 more months, thats heaps better then another year just to get another decent discussion of why it doesnt make sense to wait 6 more months. (oh and UQ is really close so thats also convenient to me xD) edit: QGL wouldn't be the same if it wasn't huge.People thought qgl would never be the same if it never happened, but people still talk about the same stuff, the same threads get reviseted and the same people have the growing postcount =p Though i agree 50 is small, 150-300 is better then no lan at all. Rather then one huge lan, maybe segment the lan into stuff like "QGL-CS lan in april" "QGL BF1942 & Q3A LAN in june" and then at least you go to the lan you think is good, and go see the people you play with, and meet the people from the servers. etc last edited by skythra at 20:17:12 09/Nov/04 |

hey guys, how many people will travel out to cleveland for a lan? there is a sweet ass venue out here for almost free (like $500 for 2 days) has parking etc and _some_ food prep and service space (big fridge) can seat upwards of 450 people and the best part.. im the on hand dude there so it my way or the highway.. though it has no in house networking or aircon :( it does have about 8 major fast food chains close by (eagle boys pizza hut dominoes red rooster macdonalds kfc several million fish and chips shops) also there is limited window are to cover since i hung new curtains in there what a week ago now... so if ur concidering a south/east side venue...
Khel i emailed u some stuff about it |

If you need help cleaning up which is the worst part of the lan, I allways use to help out at the end of the lan, all the other gamers just left it to the admins. I even took car loads of gear to Term's house when there was only 3 of us to clean up (me, term and boba)
I think that everyone at the lan should have to pay a 20 deposit at the start of the lan, they only get that money back at the very end of the lan if they help pack up and clean up. If it is a 2 day lan and people only want to come one day you could get them to clean up rubbish for half an hr or something. then if people just want to leave and not help out you would have some cash that should be put straight into the admins pocket's for all the hard work they put in. The only people that will complain is the people that know they are going to skip out on the job. As far as I know qgl is a non-profit organisation and everyone can chip in on the day or setup night. |

Cleaning up is one of the big problems, and it'll definately need to be something we address when we've got the venue locked down and a lan is happening.
I think asking for a deposit is a bit harsh though, its really only a minority of the people who are the ones causing/leaving all the mess. When the lan happens though, one of the things we will be doing is having a lot more admins out on the floor walking around, checking for armbands (yes, they'll most likely be coming back) to make sure people have paid, checking for juarez, and I guess checking for rubbish as well and getting people to clean up their mess during the lan, rather than leaving it all at the end. |

As for food and drinks, and general event administration - implement a system like there is in GameArena. Admins deal with the core running of the event, LANOps deal with checking for juarez, food/drink, armbands etc and then LANRefs help organise competitions.
Would take a LOT of the load of the shoulders of the admins, without having to give people full access as "QGL LAN Admins". |

yea that actually does sound mad, and also whats wrong with entertainment centre (sorry if it has just been answered, havent been paying that much attention) but can't go wrong with free venues and that is right on the gateway.

Yeah having "helpers" is something I've always wanted to do/implement, so hopefully everyone thinks it's a good idea and we wind up doing it :)

Wow don't read the thread for a few days and there are cool things happening. If Zorro could indeed get the BEC for free (I'd assume we'd still be up for power as well as the public liability?) that would be brilliant. There is at least a shedload of parking there and it's a huge venue.
If it's at BEC I'd definitely stay for clean up duties. What are the hours like there Zorro? Would we all be kicked out at a certain time if it was a two day lan? |

My original contact at BEC was for 2 or 3 days continous including OVERNIGHT and FREE car parking.....
It was all free....BUT...Its QGL's call which is fair enuf..it is their lan and they can hold it where they feel comfortable with. I will say tho...NO foodoutlets at venue will be open tho....thats not a big prob tho...not far to go get food anyway. Anyway..like i said..its their call...i was given a reply in a friendly manner and so it was just an offer to them at the time. Its a dead issue as far as i consider now. |

Umm khel do us a favor and if you nuke everything for an entire pages worth, instead just delete it, i mean its pointless to wade through a page of "nuke" messages
If anyone actually posted that, it would be called spamming. so stop the spam and cut down the f***ing ham. ie, clean up after yoruself when you burp and people die. |

A lot of people if you delete their posts, take it as an invitation to repost what they said, or it spawns a whole series of "where did my post go?" posts. This way its obvious that what they said is unacceptable.
Nobody was necessarily breaking forum rules or anything, I'm just trying to keep the thread on track. |
