I've been looking to get a DVD Burner for a little while but a friend said that it would probably be better to get a hard drive.

So my question is should I get a 160 GB hard drive or DVD Burner, probably an 8x?

As they are around the same price, specs don't really matter all I want to know is what would you get if you had to choose. A DVD burner or a Hard Drive?

id take the harddrive, but ive already got 2 dvd burners

id go the 200gig wd hdd as they are $170 and have a 3yr warranty but eh dvd burners are quite handy

I'd go the Pioneer 8x burner over a new hdd.

I know there are several other threads about which DVD Burner to get but which Pioneer should I choose. Its down to these two seeing as how the other threads say pioneer are the way to go.

Well on the advice of a few people I've changed my mind and now I'm going the hdd and then later I'll get a dvd burner if I need it. It all serve my purposes better since my current hdd is almost full.

I was just looking on the umart website and since I'll be in the city tomorrow I might pick it up then.

However, manshoon mentioned the seagate 200 gb having a 5 yr warranty but on the site it only says 12 months. But the Western Digital 200 gb has a 36th month warranty. Is the information on the Seagate out of date or should I go the Western Digital because it says it has a longer warranty and as both are the same price?

almost all seagate drives have 5yr now

+ i dont like WD, 200gb one died on me (bad sectors) and i lost everything, however was replaced with a brand new one

Im so sick of burning. Id rather a HDD but they fill to easily these days so we have a problem.

All current Seagate drives are 5 yr warranty....trust me....most come out of my workplace. Umart support the warranty for 12 months (but if you hit em up for it after 12 months they will help ya out cos they are a great bunch of blokes)

it depends with some hdd's im no expert but when i went to buy my 3rd 120gb wd the sales dude explained to me that there are certain letters in the product code that tell the warranty of the hdd, for wd's its a J

+ all 8mb cache hdd's should have a 3yr+ warranty these days

DVD burner as far as I'm concerned.

A new drive will run out of space. the dvd burner is only limited to as many cd's you have in your posession.

the way i look at it, ur gonna end up with one of each anyways -

scenario a) buy the burner, start processing movies u record to burn to dvd to watch, run out of hdd space, go buy bigger hdd
scenario b) buy the hdd, fill it up again, run out of space again, go buy dvd burner and burn pretty much everything to dvd

so its basically just whatever order u prefer ^_^ - personally, my dvd burner has been one of my best computer buys, and i use it a heap to free harddrive space..but then, ive never really had to put up with only having 80gig since i had my own pc, so itll depend whether u desparatly need a huge amount of space, or whether ur dvd burner could be used to free up a little more space that u will actually use

i call bulls***. yes, i love my seagate drives, but the 5 year warranty only effects drives that have left seagate's posession AFTER July 27th.

now, with the way that australia is with hardware, can anyone tell me for SURE that their seagate hard drive left after july 27th? especially since, unlike WD's, seagate don't have a manufacture date on them, only a date code instead?

EDIT: umart website only has 12month warranty listed, so i guess they don't have the new ones yet

Well I got the Seagate today and its all working fine and I've never had a problem with a hdd before so I'm not overly fussed about the warranty.

dvd burners are the way forward. hire, burn, return. get a phat dvd collection in no time.

ive signed up for a mail order blockbuster. £13 a month for unlimited dvds... ill need another burner me thinks

I work for the supplier who sells Umart their Seagate HDD. We have had 5yr warranty drives now for a couple of months. When the annoucement was made we sent all the old stock back and got new stock ( I also believe we may have had some deal done with them where we supplied the serial numbers of what we had and they adjusted the warranty accordingly).

Oh and the 12 month warranty is all Umart will support it for. Also parts of their website really do need updating. I used to work there and know the guys who currently work there....John is working on updates.

I have changed camp from Seagate to Maxtor, as I know have 2 DIAMONDMAX PLUS 9 drives and they rock, 8mb cache and eat my Seagate Barracuda's for seek time.

Which lead to a

200GB DIAMONDMAX

Buy hookers instead.
