So the big two days are coming up for people sitting the QCS test. Just wondering who here is sitting it. I'm still deciding whether to sit it or not.
But I don't think I will cause I don't need to :) also: what where people's experiences from previous years? |

I'm required to and I'm not worried about it. I've done a few practice tests through school and it's just like those UNSW papers. The only thing that will bother me is the length.

yeah, we've absolutely done it to death in practice sessions; nothing to worry about, except the fear of looking at the written task stimuli and lacking creativity to get something good done.
's all good. it's only two days Wasabi, isn't it worth it to be OP elligable, just incase your other plan falls through? |

Get over it. Its an exam. Not a particularly difficult one. Do it, even if you don't think you need it do it. At worst you wasted about 12 hours fo your life.
Also its not based on cirriculum thats the whole point of it. If the biggest stress you have in your entire life turns out to be the fact you did this exam, then you had a pretty f***ing cruisey life (or a really short one). |

Evidently the curriculum these days doesn't include spelling.

If you think spelling is an important thing in life, you have serious penis up the bum issues.
Hell spelling wasn't even codified until relatively recently, and even now how many ways can you spell the same word in english and it still have exactly the same meaning ? Only time it really matters is when it changes the mean of what you are saying, hence effects the communication of an idea (the entire point of english in the first place). |

Just whatever you do, dont go in there and not take it seriously. Think about your mates that actually want to use this test to get the schools marks up to a higher ranking.

The only reason I don't want to sit it cause I am not OP eligable and I cant even get a field position. And "IF" I ever want to go to uni i'll apply as an adult and then you don't need an OP to enter.

cant you apply for qtac to get an op or some s***?
Just whatever you do, dont go in there and not take it seriously. Think about your mates that actually want to use this test to get the schools marks up to a higher ranking.i was in an english test the other day, surrounded by f***ing idiots. non stop talking for 1hr 20mins and the teacher was to f***ing stupid to do anything about it - knowing me, id be the one to go 'f***up' and then be the only one in trouble for talking, so i just tried to concentrate and finished it -oh and from that other thread, where i said i used euphemism in the exam and not metaphor, i checked it out & i did use it correctly :D |

My tips are: With the essay, write it in whatever style you are most comfortable with, be it report style, short story, recipe, whatever, hopefully you've found out what style you find easiest during the practices.
My second tip is for the short answer and to a lesser degree the multichoice anyone, and I mean anyone can get the questions out given enough time, so if after a couple of minutes on a question and you still have no idea just move on and come back to it later, you can get them out with time. Good luck cadets! |

And "IF" I ever want to go to uni i'll apply as an adult and then you don't need an OP to enter. If you want to apply for a real university you will need some sort of grading level. QTAC offers an exam for mature age candidate students which is an equivalent exam to the ones that students do. Except it is tailored to the type of subject that you are applying for, such as; I had applied to do Engineering subjects so I got math heavy exams, and some English and a metric f***ton of general knowledge questions. Other people where applying for s*** that didn’t have a maths component so they only had to do English and General Knowledge. I found it pretty easy (in the top 5%), so did Shad … although it was obvious that many people didn’t. The result of this exam is used by courses to validate if they are going to accept you as a student or not. That being said, whatever you do with your life make sure it is something you enjoy doing. I don’t mean in that “WOOHOO THIS IS FUN”, rather some part of it stimulates you either mentally (the challenge of the problems you are solving), or physically (You just built a wall!). If you are doing something you f***ing loath … then stop. You are only wasting the time and money of anyone remotely connected to it. This goes for everything, Trades, Uni, Maccas Sales dude … if you hate every minute of it, look for something better suited to you. All of that being said: I used to bag the f*** out of Uni, and claim that I wouldn’t need it. Since actually going to Uni and actually working at the subjects, I have learned f***loads. 3 years ago I was a fat, lazy, gamer who could dream up cool thoughts but couldn’t come though and produce anything. Now I am not nearly as fat or lazy, and I can produce stuff that makes even some engineers at Boeing go … wow dude that’s cool. Sure I could have learned a lot of what I have learned all on my own and some of it was stuff I already knew, but the whole package … for me at least … has been totally amazing. |

This can be a bad idea because if students do it who don't really have to, they aren't going to try very hard which pulls down the rest of the year level. I personally found the testing pretty easy and got an A for it. |

All through my first degree I wasn't really sure if it was what I wanted to do, but my grandfather was very adament about people getting a degree, because, even if for nothing else, it proves that you can stick it out and get one. Anyhoo, now I am doing my second degree and loving it! |

My second tip is for the short answer and to a lesser degree the multichoice anyone, and I mean anyone can get the questions out given enough time, so if after a couple of minutes on a question and you still have no idea just move on and come back to it later, you can get them out with time. For non multi-guess exams (I haven’t done one in years). Also don’t be afraid to attack the questions out of order (unless one question builds up on the last). Identify the questions that you can do and do them first. Work out how much time you can spend on each question leaving yourself a bunch of time to revise at the end of exams (eg you have 6 questions to answer in 3 hours, you spend 20 minutes trying to answer that question and leave 10 minutes for revision) . When you have hit your time deadline read over the questions again, and then your answers, this allows you to repair any major mistakes with time to spare. It is critical that you identify which questions you can nail off the top of you head, without any padding. By completing all of your easy marks first you guarantee that you get those marks. Then you can waffle on about the stuff you don’t totally know. Also by giving yourself some time at the end (I try and give myself 1/3 of the exam), you make sure that you get some marks for as many questions as possible. It is really hard to get 100% for each question, it is pretty easy to get 50% of the information they want to see. My experience is that even if you are running out of time, and you put all the stuff you need to answer in dot point, you will get some marks … and some marks is better than the introduction to no marks :) |

its hands down the easiest exam I ever sat in my senior years of schooling.
the best part is your individual mark won't have a massive effect on your exiting grade, so the stress is reduced. |

QCS = Queensland Core Skills
If your teachers told you its a grade 10 test, then they were lying. There is piss easy stuff on there, and there is incredibly hard stuff on there, but they're trying to gauge your general core skills. It doesnt mean that much to you individually, so dont worry... I got an A on QCS (it tells you when you get your senior certificate) and I still got an OP 13... so, believe me, it doesnt mean much... IT IS A GROUP MARK (group meaning, your class for each subject, and the grade as a whole) |

A on QCS and an OP 13 wouldn't be that unusual. I have a few mates who got OP 1 and got B/C
I got to go to Government house and recieve an award for being in the Top 50 students in the whole of QLD in the QCS. of the other 49 students there, only about 30 got OP 1's, though none got worse than a 5. |

meh, it's nothing big.
I was going through a very tragic and personal time when I sat my QCS (Mother died nearly exactly a year before and QCS fell right between that date and her would-be birthday) so as I result I completely flunked it... I didn't go to uni "like I wanted" (like you're told you have to..) and that's the only way that failing it affected me. No job interviews asked me for my OP or QCS score, it didn't affect me in any way and I now have a great job with the prospect of going to uni again without that nasty little number hanging over my head. |

Yep, easiest test I sat in high school. (99)
I wrote a quasi 'Ronin' story about samurais and tatoos. I missed 17 questions on the first 50 multiple choice, didn't put a title on my creative piece, and still got an A. piece of piss. |

failing qcs won't prevent you going to uni, being a dumbarse and getting bad OP will.
generally the two go hand in hand though as QCS is f***ing easy. |

QCS is over-rated, and will have no effect on your end results; all I can see QCS to be is a ranking for the schools.

actually nothing can prevent you from uni.
i know someone who got a 24 and now is in uni. And i finished in 2002. Dont listen to your teachers, they dont tell the truth. Im not saying dont do well but its not the end of your student life if you dont. I only passed 2 subjects in 2002 maths and eng. and got a c on qcs, and not in 2 months i will have 3 diplomas. Qut sent me a invatation for uni next year but i dont think ill take it. rather do work. |

My piece of advice: If your year co-ordinator threatens to withhold your senior certificate, listen to them. (f***ing dick Haddrell, lucky his wife's so freakin' hot)
I still don't know how I did on my QCS exam, or ANY of my high school subjects, all I know is my O.P. Now I'm in second year Uni, and none of those numbers have any relevance at all. What matters now is my G.P.A., and I've been letting that drop. Second piece of advice: if your course outline says that if you don't attend the tutorials, you will automatically fail, listen to them. Repeating a course this semester that I got enough marks for a 5 last time around. I think I may have problems with authority, or learning, or both. last edited by N-Dude at 18:37:25 30/Aug/04 |

yea, SSM, mine was about a samurai clan who all had these tatoos, but the authorities could never figure out who the master was. there was one sword passed down through the ages with the ability to remove the tatoo without leaving a scar. when the master's time was over, he would slay all his samurai bar one, the one most worthy. the other samurai would accept their death as they were not worthy of living if not chosen by their master - there was no dignity in life after the master had not chosen them, and to accept their death was the highest respect they could pay their master.the the master would then use his sword to remove the tatoo of his successor before commiting seppuku. The new master would gain diciples, each recieving the sacred tatoo, and so the cycle would continue.
hehe, was my best story out of all the pracs I did aswell :) got an OP8 (due to slackness) |

im right for QCS, although the english writing one takes me a while to get going. My last prac was on 'faces' and i did a book review of "A Clockwork Orange" ahaha, and got a 2 for it... as for sitting in the hall for prolly 6+ hours over two days, without saying *a word* ... "short term pain, for long term gain" as a good friend told me... cheers, and good luck fellas p.s. take a minute in the exam to remember fellow QGL buddies who are sitting the exam as well ... |

No job interviews asked me for my OP or QCS score, it didn't affect me in any way and I now have a great job with the prospect of going to uni again without that nasty little number hanging over my head. What kind of jobs are they for Grosby? If the list stops at what is essentially un-qualified office admin (which it might not it has been a while since I have had much if any contact with you), then it would be surprising that they would have asked you for your OP. Second piece of advice: if your course outline says that if you don't attend the tutorials, you will automatically fail, listen to them. Repeating a course this semester that I got enough marks for a 5 last time around. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha sigh.. 2 days of hell starting tomorrow :( If you think two days of pretty easy examination is hell … wait until you get introduced to the rest of life. |

Trapper - yup. Afterwards that slackarse guidence officer of ours told me that I could've applied for 'stress something-or-other' which would have upped my OP by a major big bit.
AFTERWARDS she told em that. Morons. And typo, I was going for a range of jobs, from office junior, shop assistant to teacher aide - nothing glamourous, but even the one for EQ (which I got) didn't ask me. :) Sure, i wasn't going for any jobs that needed a qualification -- because all I had was a certificate II in business admin.. and if I did have a qual - they needn't ask my OP anyway. |

there was just a few questions on the MC paper about the base numbers that i had noooo f***ing idea about (lol read up in this thread and i said some maths questions would own me) i wrote about the most tripped out s*** for WT. i used the war thing for stimulus, and so did most guys from my grade. i wrote about how me and my mates were called to join the army and fight against south korea(lol) just s***ted on for a bit.. then i was on a plane on my way to deployment, i went to sleep, woke up. some dude walks over to me and explains that for the past 2 days iv been connected to these nodes that have been feeding me information. there is no war etc etc ( a la matrix) and the whole idea was to create a simulation to mentally train the next generation of potential solders for war. the actual topic was "what matters", and i kept referring to how the simulations differed from person to person, due to each person having different things mattering most to them in our lives. (i mean like how we reacted when we thought we were going to war) bit of a pointless way to write but i thought it was fairly original. so bascially we were used as science experiments lol |

I could respect you if you couldn't understand it, but "Guessing cause I can't be f***ed to read it" is really f***ing lame. Your laziness has now inadvertently affected the rest of your grade. Nice work cock-knocker, I'm sure your mates love you for it.
Anyway, I truly didn't understand the base-4 etc questions, rest were fine. I chose the jungle with soldiers and camera lens as my stimulus, and wrote about an Australiam Vietnam War Photographer. |

I hated that base numbers and that split infinitives thing in the mc. think i f***ed them up (N)
in the wt, i wrote about the evacuation fire thing, and how the family had no choice but to go down that mine shaft thing. Yep crap, but couldnt think of anything else to write about. |

did they tell you to just have a story/essay you have written in the past in mind and to just regurgitate that for the written task.
maybe its changed but when I did it they said you could link it to the stimulus in the most obscure way you liked. So I just got an old English essay that I had nailed and remembered it, once I got in there I just looked for some obscure link between my essay and the pic, tacked that into the essay somewhere and it was done. do they make you have a definitive link these days? |

For my WT I wrote about what matters more in like money or living. It was pretty basic but i hope it related to the task.
As for MC I man that was crap. Was way harder than the practice ones. Oh well, only one more day to go :D! + I'm counting on my subject results more than my QCS results. last edited by Triamks at 17:52:49 31/Aug/04 |

erm.. learned about different bases before? in ~gd9 maths? it only required a basic understanding of numbers. infact, that unit was probably the one of the easiest on the MC paper (/gloat)
some of the split infinitive stuff was screwy though, esp. Item 25.. I swear H W Fowler isn't speaking english. didn't have any major hassles for the rest of the paper. WT on the other hand.. did some random philosophical rant as a feature article, it sucked so bad. |

base questions were easy ^_^ the first three answers had 4's in em, hence ruled them out automatically (base4 meaning u can only have 0's, 1s, 2s, 3s)
soz if its already been said - just had to add my 2c from some of the random comments i saw from what ive seen of the mc paper so far (havnt really looked in depth) its a lot easier than the one i did 2 years ago - or maybe thats just cause i can read it from the comfort of my room and not in a hot hall with 150 odd people around me etc altho, the written task sounds as if it eclipses the gayness of ours (light) altho i havnt seen the pics yet, there mightve been something good to write about one of the pics |

nah but we were given people's stories that they wrote for that theme. the themes for the practices my school did were space and light. the WT today was piss easy compared to the practice. theme was 'What matters'

space and light Yeh we did those for practise as well - I did pretty well. We had a marker go through them all (2 & 2-). As for this years stimulus - I totally f***ed it =( I didnt relate it to that 'what matters', only the stimulus on the sheet which is gonna own me. I think I win the biggest tool award :(~. I went pretty well in the MC today and I gunned the SRI in the prac so I should be ok. Can you still get an A overall if you bomb writing task (ie 4) and get 80+% for the sri and 2 * MC's? Lucky I dont need a good op to get into uni! :P I think the general consensus was that we all f***ed it :( Whats everyone here been predicted op wise? I got told 1-3 but I wont get a 1 unless I work harder. Its hard to find the motivation tho when I only need a 6... so f***ing over year12!! |

My school has done all the practices from that one (~00) till last year. Nakor:- I thought yours (02) much easier, but still harder than other years, than this years. Also realising the trick to base numbers with 10 minutes to go isnt the best thing. :( last edited by Triamks at 21:02:15 31/Aug/04 |

To anyone who actually did the exam, I'd very much like to see some examples of the harder questions in it.
I'm a NSW year 12 student who's currently staring down the barrel of the HSC. Standardized blocked exams that range between 3-6 hours for each subject and have a weighting that exceeds 50% of your UAI (our equivalent of QLD's OP). I'm not stressing... honest :| Dirty mexicans eh? :( |

I got 38 and 38 for the practice MC tests and something and 51 for the practice SR test. 1 and 1- for the WT tests
Today was at least 234098234098 times easier than yesterday..then again, yesterday was pretty easy yay! now proper tests start! Also, if everyone in your grade does s*** at QCS, the whole grade gets s*** op's, even the kids who got straight A's coz it basically tells the QSA that getting an A at that school is worth less than s*** last edited by reload! at 18:11:25 01/Sep/04 |

It ranks your school against every other school in Queensland to gauge the value of your SAI at that school. Sure, you might be coming first at your school, but that doesn't mean anything if you're going to a school full of people who f***ed around for QCS and didn't do it properly. A's and B's mean f***all, its all about your SAI and how well your school does at QCS

HSC is nothing like QCS Apart from the fact that the HSC also determines your school's scaled assessment marks, I guess. It's still toted as the bigger test for you guys though isn't it? |

sorta cept unlike HSC the individual can get an E on QCS and still get an OP1
And no..QCS isn't a stupid system..if everyone does their best instead of just giving up, even if you only get a C on QCS instead of just saying "im not gonna get an A, f***it, I'll just f*** around on it and get an E, it makes no difference to me" then you will be helping your school and your mates and if everyone has the proper f***ing attitude, youll benefit from it. Eitherway, if you can't see the benefit of it, you're probably too stupid to pass a uni course anyway, so don't worry about it.. |
