I know they are phazing out 754 but do you guys think it would be a bad idea to purchase a 754 over a 939 processor?

Yor opinions on this matter are welcome thow lets not start an Intel over AMD thread!

Yeah, I'm curious as well. While all my previous PC's have been Intel, I've a mate who is waiting to see what socketset AMD settle on prior to upgrading. I'm kinda in agreement with him as Intel seem to be doing the same thing. Seeing as I'm in no desperate need for change (P4 3.0 Ghz, Asus P4G8X-Deluxe, 1 gig of ram and a 9800 Pro) I'll wait for the dust to settle before I do something about the obsolete bus & ram speed I have. It's funny though cause most LAN's we have, I'm host even though there are a couple of more machines who have better resources, yet fall apart as servers (must be cause their XP an I use 2K).

it's because the Asus P4G8X_De was a freak Herme... it shamed the following 2 generations of Asus Intel mobos that followed it's inception ;)

I've got a socket 754 cpu and have seen 939's in action. I cant honestly see any benefit of the 939's over the 754's. It all depends on your financial situation.

Its a lan tag for SwitchLAN and I made Firefrog his sig. There's a few other people around with similar sigs.

You're probably going to want a new board when PCI-E and Soundstorm 2 are all the rage anyway, so I don't think it really makes much difference.

There's a better selection of motherboards available for s754.

pci-e is still in early stages and I need a cpu upgrade bad.. XP1800 dont cut it in doom 3 but 9800xt does the job fine...

I think im leaning towards amd 64 over intel prescott's price wise and performance...
game performance with my current amd is just s***-house and a major bottleneck.

anyone got an athlon 64 or fx running XL memory....?
and what it run like (any probs etc etc)

i read a review on this a while ago, yes the 754's are being phased out as you said, the last CPU's AMD is going to make for it is the 3700.

but if you just want a computer now, i cant see anything wrong with the 754.

nuff said, there is little to no reason to update ur board and all the other bits atm. if ur current board can run a 2800+ or 3000+ and oc it a bit then get one of those and save ur money for a proper upgrade when its needed.

what board do u have, check it out, it can probably handle a 3000+ atm and if not the newest bios will probably enable it.

haha no way still running an old asus a7a266e no new bios's for this baby.... max of xp2400 or some s*** like that.

and im not gonna be another one of these people that say...
Ill just hold off for another 6months and then 6 more months down the track say the same thing.

don't really care as long as it works and plays most games fine...
then IM HAPPY!!! :)

i'm still running ye old Amd 1.4ghz, a7v266 mobo, 256megs ram, gf4 ti4200(newest addition)

3 years so far and its all going good....

i'm not looking at upgrading anything major like cpu and mobo in the near future until this one either breaks or i completely cant play any games on this computer.

according to the asus site it can take upto a XP2600+ so whack a 2500+ or 2600+ in it and OC it to 3200+ like every other one of these chips. seems like ur spending money for the heck of it, when u dont need to. if u really want games performance then u need to upgrade ur gfx card not ur system.

its a foriegn concept i know, saving ur money, but trust me its a good one in the long run. Im not saying wait for the next good thing to come along, im just saying dont fix what aint broke.

I bet it takes a t'bred core and not a barton, so the 2500+ won't work.
