Just haveing an argument over this with someone made me want to ask, what is your prefered control method for games. I am fanatical when it comes to useing arrow keys for fwd back and strafe myself and just have everything bound to the mouse buttons or close by keys, the wsad system seems wrong to me (but then i started by playing wolf 3d)

Ecstasy, I dont now what mouse you have.. but I use a v3
Install the proper drivers and setup 'program specific buttons'

So you bind mouse4 to say /
Then in Q3 when you bind to mouse4, it will go to /, and it'll work fine

I got into some weird control system with Duke 3D... not that it was the default for it anyhow.

Left mouse btn: primary fire
Middle mouse btn: secondary fire
Right mouse btn: forward
Space: backward
Z: strafe left
X: strafe right
C: crouch
D: jump
A: reload
S: use

Those key combinations are whacked. wsad/tgfh depending on how many keys the game needs.

Heh.

Mouse1 Strafe left
Mouse2 strafe right
A forward
Z backward
Shift jump
X crouch
Ctrl fire
Space alternate fire

Descent controls > yuo

That's not descent controls, my current setup is a hangover from descent 1:
a - forward
z - back
s - strafe left
d - strafe right
w - jump
x - crouch
Also leaves q & e free if rolling or leaning is required.
Mouse buttons for primary & secondary fire. I had stuff like grenades on side buttons for a while but you can't hold side buttons and move the mouse accurately.

Only downside is (was) that bunnyhopping was really hard since jumping & changing strafe is difficult.

WASD is what I have used for a while but there was a time when I used the arrow keys. I have no idea why the hell I used them but god they were s*** for anything other than older fps which didn't have many functions to use.

Descent controls are CTRL for fire, and space for secondary... I adapted the mouse for strafe myself :p

I'm arrows for everything except a few games like BF 1942 where I need to use wasd because there are soooo many other things to bind nearby.

most fps games like quake and cs and stuff I have always used arrows.

esdf -=- it means I can use the left home key to find the keys if for some reason my hand drifts. It also gives me more keys to the left.

Mouse on the left for looking, arrow keys for moving and ctrl and ins for strafe.

I'm right handed but use the mouse with my left. Just got used to it because when you play arcade games the joystick is on the left and the buttons on the right.

I used the arrow keys until I moved my right hand off the keyboard to the mouse. It stopped making sense to have no hand near the letter keys for binds. WASD for life.

Right mouse btn: forward

Heh, same here.

SDF = strafe left, back, right
right mouse = foward
left mouse = attack

and the rest varies from game to game...
eg:
QWERT = weapons
A = reload

oh and anyone ever remember a control setup like this before it dawned on the general population that the mouse is good?

arrows = strafe left & right, forward & back
then either WASD or ESDF to look up, down, left & right?

and all those dumb circle strafe aliases before that? :)

I cant believe how many noobs out there. I bet most of you used the games default setup anyway.

I only play FPS and my key combo works with them all, and allows me complete range of movements.

LMB = fire
RMB = forward
space = secondary fire/zoom
asd = strafe and back
w = jump
qe = lean left/right
r = reload
shift = duck
ctrl = prone

Having RMB as forward allows for some excellent jump control and agility, cos you have your left hand to completly control strafing, jumping and directions. Like the old superman dive attack in DOD was only possible with this key configuration, the old RQR guys used to rape with it.

Thats all you need, leet people have the same combo and it doesnt tie your fingers up to do tricky manouvres.

well wasd esdf and for years while playing cs i used asdf (just so i could crouch (c) and walk forward with out to much trouble)

but i know a bloke who uses some weird ass hat number pad system by turning the keyboard so its perpendicular to the desk... then inverting the mouse just to make it more confusing...

I used arrow keys for a few weeks playing wolf, thought that was nuts and changed to wasd.
Been using wasd for ages since then.
Moved on to yghj cause I saw odie usen them and the extra keys are win.

To me:

Arrow Keys < wasd < yghj
I keep forgetting to bind new games to yghj tho and end up playing with wasd untill I could be bothered to change them to yghj :(

W - Forward
S - Backward
A - Strafe Left
D - Strafe Right
E - Use
R - Reload
F - (Use; if E needed for lean or other bind) Otherwise it's Drop Weapon/Holster Weapon etc. etc.

L shift - Walk (or crouch if game has prone)
L Ctrl - Crouch (or prone if it exists)
Space - Jump
MSB1 - Fire
MSB2 - Alternate Fire
MSB4 - If game has walk and prone - becomes Walk

To me it all makes sense...
Shift is crouch, next thing beneath that key is Prone (Which your char drops down lower to the ground for).

Whoever said you need to have mouse2 for walk forward to strafe properly and walk is on crack! =) I dunno how you position your fingers for WSAD but for me it's the same way I used to use arrow keys back in the day -

Index - D
Middle Finger - W and S
Ring Finger - A
Pinky - Walk/Crouch/Duck/Prone
Thumb - Jump

About the only thing you can't do is reach Reload/use etc. and strafe right at the same time.

play arcade Piston Pete games
=P

Same except I never use walk and I use the middle button for zoom/misc. depending on game. Oh and I always use F for use.

I use that config for every FPS I play and I use E, Q, G, MMB for game specific binds like E for parachute and G for drop gun in BF.

The right mouse run forward button is great for the refreshing mandatory skoll of scotch or beer with your left hand.
You really cant afford to let go of your mouse for a second and the right mouse forward allows you the flexibility.
I even go over the top and bind my fire button to a key for my left hand so the aiming isnt affected by the physical act of pressing the mouse.
How many times have you had the ultimate headshot lined up but when you left clicked the mouse moved a c***-hair (especially with wet mouse/beer skoll hand) :)

Thoughts?

I'm going to tell you my cliche config

  • Normal WSAD
  • Inverted Mouse
  • Space or Mouse3 for Jump
  • E for use, R for reload etc
  • Mouse2 for Secondary Fire/Jump in Q3 style shooters

and follow it with a big fat

I used to use the arrow keys, but now I use wasd. One advantage with the arrow keys is that for a comfortable position my keyboard/mouse would be quite far appart and wouldn't interfere with each other, with wasd I find I hit the keyboard with the moust a bit & keep having to separate them.

Let's take this one step more and ask do you use inverted or non inverted mouse. Inverted for me, can't play any other way.
